The CW is officially in the Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit business, closing deals on a pair of game shows based on the classic board games.
Both have been in the works for some time; Deadline reported on Trivial Pursuit being in the works last summer. The CW declined comment Wednesday, but an official announcement is expected shortly.
Both game shows come from Hasbro Entertainment; Lionsgate Alternative Entertainment, which acquired the eOne assets from Hasbro last year; and The CW. Scrabble is also produced by Mattel Television Studios.
There are no hosts attached to either project, but LeVar Burton previously had been attached to the Trivial Pursuit adaptation.
Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit are the latest unscripted orders from The CW’s reality chief Heather Olander, who last year told Deadline she was looking to launch a game show with “some IP along with it.”

Lara Parker, who as the vengeful witch Angelique Bouchard spent centuries entangled in a love-hate relationship with Jonathan Frid’s Barnabas Collins on the gothic ABC soap opera Dark Shadows, has died. She was 84.
Parker died Thursday in her sleep at her home in Topanga Canyon in Los Angeles, her daughter, Caitlin, told The Hollywood Reporter.
On the big screen, Parker stood out as a prostitute whose client has a heart attack in John G. Avildsen’s Save the Tiger (1973), starring Jack Lemmon in an Oscar-winning turn, and she played the wife of Peter Fonda‘s character in the satanic horror film Race With the Devil (1975), also featuring Warren Oates and Loretta Swit.
Mere days after arriving in New York in 1967, the green-eyed Parker auditioned for Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis, who cast her as Angelique in a story arc that would detail the origin of the tortured vampire Barnabas.

The CW is closing on a deal to turn Trivial Pursuit into a gameshow hosted by LeVar Burton.
It comes nearly two years after Burton signed up to host the adaptation following his guest stint hosting Jeopardy!.
Burton was one of the popular Jeopardy! guest hosts but didn’t land the job full time. Afterwards, he told The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah that he was looking for the “right” game show to host.
He will also exec produce the series, which comes from eOne through his LeVar Burton Entertainment banner. The CW insiders cautioned that the deal was not done yet.
It is the latest version of Trivial Pursuit to head to the screen; Freeform precursor The Family Channel ran a series hosted by Wink Martindale in 1993/94 that was loosely based on the game, while a syndicated version, Trivial Pursuit: America Plays ran in 2008/09.

The unique skill set that allows game show hosts to keep the action flowing as excited contestants vie for prizes is not something everyone has. It’s why certain hosts last for a long time and helm multiple games.
Today, some of that game show community saluted a true master of the art in Bob Barker, who passed away at his home after nearly a half-century of gamesmanship.
Some of the reactions:
Peter Marshall – Hollywood Squares:
“Long before I became an emcee, I admired Bob Barker very much. He was great at what he did, quite wonderful. I can’t claim to have been close to Bob, but when together at events we always talked about our shared love of animals. I hope everyone knows what he did for animal welfare.”
Wink Martindale – Tic Tac Dough:
“In the history of televised game shows, no one is more synonymous with host than Bob Barker.

This TV genre suffered a scandal in 1950s that nearly wiped it off screens, but endures as one of the most popular programming types today. Now, the history of these shows finally has a physical home of its own.
What is… the game show?!
The first quiz show launched on radio in 1923; now, nearly 100 years later, the National Archives of Game Show History has launched at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, N.Y. Veteran TV producers Bob Boden (“Funny You Should Ask”) and Howard Blumenthal (“Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”) have co-founded the archives and will curate the collection.
Boden and Blumenthal are aiming to acquire materials and records from game show professionals, such as producers, performers, directors, designers, writers, executives, and staff members. They’re looking for items like scripts, set designs, props, technical plans, marketing materials, creative plans, production plans, and more. The...

Trebek, who hosted the long-running Jeopardy! game show for 37 years, taped his last show at the end of October. His final appearance will be on December 25.
Reactions to his death poured in from contestants, fans and others who were touched by his warm, witty, yet authoritative television presence on Jeopardy! and many other shows throughout the years.
We’ll add reactions as they come, so refresh for more. The postings so far:
“I have lost one of my dearest friends. Little did I expect this as he was still laughing with me a day ago. Alex was without a doubt one of the funniest people God put on this earth.

Welcome to this week’s Nxt review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and Takeover 31 turned out great. I didn’t get around to reviewing it yet, but Chris Cummings wrote a great review about the show that summed up my feelings on the matter. The CruiserWeight Title fight was a 4 for me, Kushida/Dream was a 3.3, Gargano/Priest was a 4.1, Shirai/LeRae was a 4.4 and Balor/O’Reilly was a 5 out of 5. Why can’t Nxt’s weekly show be that good? Remember when big-name stars didn’t want to do TV? Now they’re even clamoring for jobs as game show hosts.
Alec Baldwin (ABC’s “Match Game”), Taye Diggs (Fox’s “Hypnotize Me”), Jane Lynch (NBC’s “Celebrity Game Night”) and Anthony Anderson (ABC’s “To Tell the Truth”) are just some of the actors who now front major primetime game shows, in addition to their regular scripted work.
“You look at game shows from the 1970s and 1980s, they were somewhat cheesy,” Anderson said. “It’s different now. It’s a lot classier. It’s cool.”
Wayne Brady, who has hosted a “Let’s Make a Deal” revival for CBS since 2009, joked that “being a game show host was very much akin to being a local affiliate weatherman – and no offense to local affiliate weathermen, but there’s a stereotype.”

I am a game show zealot. I believe in the umber glow of Chuck Woolery and the sneering capabilities of Paul Lynde. I'm also a rabid fan of trivia; I was on "Jeopardy!" a couple weeks ago and Gsn's "The Chase" before that. Every time network TV rolls out a new primetime trivia-based game show, I'm listening and hopeful and there -- and I have three spring-loaded requests: 1) Please, Jesus, anything but more "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"-type lighting; 2) Good lord, no more multiple choice questions; 3) Make me love you, new show. I want to love you. Embrace me, you child. Last year we got the Ryan Seacrest-hosted "Million Second Quiz," a multiple-choice bonanza with "Millionaire" lighting that was tedious and unchallenging (read: not lovable). You can understand my devastation there. "500 Questions" is this year's new primetime trivia attempt. Hosted by CNN journalist Richard Quest, "500 Questions" airs...

Apologies for the lateness of this recap. I went back to New England for Thanksgiving and, after six inches of wet snow, power went off late Wednesday afternoon and didn't return until late Friday afternoon. Fortunately, my exit interview this week was already holiday-delayed, so I'm right on schedule there. Anyway... Happy Thanksgiving! Pre-credit sequence. Josh is gone. Jeremy is gone. So... Now what at Huyopa? Sloth! Is that supposed to be symbolic or just cute? Keith is confused by what happened at Tribal Council, because he was expecting Reed to be going home. He thinks Reed is still around because of... ummm... mathematical mess and other stuff that goes over Keith's head. Oddly, it has come to pass that Reed seems to either be in a dominant position, or else he thinks he's in a dominant position and he's musing on either sticking with Jon or, possibly, taking Jon out.

Betty White and her posse of old folks are at it again Wednesday (May 9) with back-to-back episodes of "Betty White's Off Their Rockers," and this time they've got TV's Batman, Adam West, to help pull pranks on unsuspecting youngsters.
In the sneak-peak clip above, West is asking for help finding a masked man in a cape -- holy lost sidekick, Batman! Did you really misplace Robin?
"I'm looking for a little guy, dark hair and wears a mask," West says to a surprised-looking young woman (who may or may not know who he is). "He's got a red vest and a little yellow cape."
Other pranks in store from the old people: a man brings his mannequin girlfriend to a restaurant, a wife enlists a stranger to pretend they are romantically involved, and Wink Martindale gets unwelcome news while pretending to tape a game show segment.

Norby Walters is not necessarily someone I would want to be friends with. For starters, he’s a sports agent. Despite my raging “Plantar fasciitis,” I am no athlete. Back in 1988, Norby was convicted of fraud and racketeering after he signed college players to professional sports teams before it was legally allowed. Despite my penchant for Scorcese crime flicks and a dude I once made out with who just got out of Rikers, I don’t often associate with criminals. He also kind of looks like my cousin Edith who passed away years ago. I loved Edith but there’s only room for one in my heart. And yet, taking allll of these things into consideration, my mind is made up: I want to be friends with Norby Walters. Why, you ask? Simple. Judging by the characters who attended his 22nd Annual Night Of 100 Stars Oscar Viewing Party, he...

NBC's Minute to Win It is half way through its holiday themed episodes and, so far, no one has won the $3 million jackpot. We spoke with the show's host, Guy Fieri, and from the sounds of it, if he were playing the challenges instead of introducing them he would not be a big winner either.
In our recent video interview, we asked him if he tries out the challenges and if he's any good. "I'm really horrible at anything that has to do with the ping pong ball... Certain games beat me up... but I really do have an appreciation for what kind of gamers these guys are."
Sounds like Guy is better off as the host instead of a player. So has he dreamed of being a game show host since he was a kid? He told us he loved game shows as growing...

Andy Richter talks TBS late-night show, private plane rides with Conan, and not competing with Ellen
With former Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien still legally prohibited from being funny on television, TBS has done the next best thing by giving Coco’s writers and sidekick Andy Richter an hour-long special to showcase their comedic stylings. When we caught up with Richter 10 days before Team Coco Presents: Conan’s Writers Live taped at this month’s Just for Laughs festival in Chicago, he was still on the road with O’Brien and admitted he had no idea what the writers were planning. “I doubt you’re gonna see a lot of cutting political satire,” he said.

Game shows used to flood the dial of my TV back in the 1980s and '90s. And that was when my TV could only pick up eight channels, three depending on the weather.
Back then, almost everything from daytime fare to the occasional prime time bit of airtime starred game show hosts. Their purpose on television was solely to wear smart suits, make sure their teeth reached the optimum level of whiteness and keep the game moving but entertaining.
Now that game shows are making a slow but steady return to television, it seems the traditional role of "host" has turned away from the traditional "game" emcee like Chuck Woolery, Wink Martindale, Bob Barker and Art Fleming and more towards lively hosting personalities from other walks of entertainment life like Drew Carey, Wayne Brady, Howie Mandel and Guy Fieri. Does this mean that the role of the traditional TV...

Guy Fieri, host of NBC's "Minute to Win It," knows all about timing.
After all, the boisterous bleached blond chef not only has to watch the clock in the kitchen, but was just beginning to hit his groove after winning "The Next Food Network Star" when he was pitched the "Minute to Win It" hosting gig.
"My agent came back two years ago from a meeting in France and said, 'I met a guy, a producer who's going to produce a show, and you're going to be the host of it,'" Fieri tells Zap2it in a phone interview. "Game show host? I don't know. To me, that's Wink Martindale and Chuck Woolery. But I love a good game show."
"Minute to Win It" challenges everyday people to accomplish tasks using household objects in a minute or less. They can win $1 million if they finish 10 of these tasks on the show.

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to game shows. I don't really like anything that's too bizarre or wanders too far from the studio audience/stage/host with a mic/play a game format. So I didn't really like the new Gsn show 'Instant Recall,' even if there were a few things that I found amusing.
The concept: host Wink Martindale and his crew stage a phony set-up to con someone into playing a game. This first episode featured two people who thought they were at a "love seminar" and a guy who found himself at a party that turned into an intervention for a woman he'd never met before (Wink and the sexy model are in another room as the con unfolds). So yeah, this is 'Candid Camera' with a twist. When it's time to let the victims off the hook, Wink comes in, introduces himself,...

First, to all of you younger people out there, yes there is someone with the awesome name "Wink Martindale" in the world (he also has a site with the equally awesome name Wink's World). He's hosted a bunch of game shows over the years and now he's going to host another one. The new Gsn show 'Instant Recall' starts on March 4.
'Instant Recall' is a hidden camera game show. The contestant has to go through a series of tasks (which we'll see via that hidden camera) and when they are done they have to answer a bunch of questions about what they did to see how good their memories are. I just hope it doesn't have all of that so-called suspenseful lighting and lame commercial breaks like a lot of game shows seem to have now.
Martindale hasn't hosted a game show in over twelve years, so it's going to...

Ken Ober, the host of one of MTV's early non-music series, the pop culture game show "Remote Control," passed to that great boob tube in the sky recently. Ober was the Wink Martindale of Generation X, going on to host three more game shows ("Make Me Laugh," "Smush," and "Perfect Match") before trading in his blue cue cards for a job behind the camera. Most recently he produced comedies like "Mind of Mencia" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine."
But Ober wasn't the only young hopeful to get his start on the emerging music television channel in its early days. In fact, MTV launched the careers of some of Hollywood's biggest actors and continues to discover future celebrities in unlikely places like the O.C. Take a look at stars who got their start on MTV and see where they are now.

The host of one of MTV's early non-music series "Remote Control" passed to that great game show in the sky this week. The 1980s pop culture quiz show tested contestants' knowledge of TV, music videos, and all things entertainment by strapping them into recliners and handing them a remote used to chose categories. Ober was quick-witted and casual, a perfect combo for the MTV fare. He was the Wink Martindale of Generation X, going on to host three more game shows ("Make Me Laugh," "Smush," and "Perfect Match") before trading in his blue cue cards for a job behind the camera. Most recently he produced comedies like "Mind of Mencia" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine." He is credited with helping launch the careers of several comedians including "Rc" regulars like Adam Sandler who said he was one of "sharpest, quickest, sweetest guys I ever met," and Denis Leary added,...
