Joined Famous Players Lasky straight out of high school. Was mentored by
Cecil B. DeMille, 1923-25. At MGM, 1929-30, then did freelance work in Germany, France and Hungary for several years. Joined 20th Century-Fox, 1933-34, then United Artists, 1934-35. Did his best work under contract at Warner Brothers, 1945-50, notably two films noir:
The Two Mrs. Carrolls (1947) and
Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye (1950).
