The other day, we took a look at Warren Manser's Daredevil and Elektra concept art, but today I wanted to look at his Green Goblin and Spidey concept art for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. I like Warren's alternate designs for Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin costume, especially the version in which the mask opens up like a visor on a knight's helmet. "I really like the Goblin from the comics because he always reminded me of halloween. My first concepts were very close to the comic version because I wanted the character to retain his method of intimidation through fear. Technology would be secondary to psychology, and so he could look like a demon. But alas, he went the high tech route. There was much concern over whether or not the audience could see actor Willem Dafoe’s performance. I created quite a few concepts of the mask’s...

Thanks to the folks at Hitfix, who uncovered these early/pre-production designs for the character known as Lady Sif, who appeared in both Thor movies - 2011's "Thor," and its 2013 sequel, "Thor: The Dark World." In both films, she was played by actress Jaimie Alexander. As you can obviously see, some early concept illustrations of Sif (by Warren Manser, one of a number of artists Marvel hired to come up with ideas for the character) show what, to me, looks obviously like a black woman (Jamie Alexander is white, I should mention). But before you get worked up, with cries of whitewashing, the character, as originally drawn in the comics, is a white woman (although,...

Long before a single frame is shot, movie studios sink hundreds of hours into pre-production. From this collective brainstorm, a film blueprint is birthed. But as with any process, not everything makes it to the final stage. Such was the case with some of the concept art for Lady Sif from 2011’s “Thor.” Trying to get the feel of Asgard just right, Marvel ended up hiring several different artists to give their take on the world of Thor. Warren Manser was one of them. To give you an idea of his credentials, Manser’s portfolio includes official concepts for everything from “Man of Steel” to “The Matrix.” Based purely on conjecture, this is Very early concept art since Jaime Alexander was cast as Sif fairly quickly. In fact, if you go through Manser’s entire Thor gallery, you can see the stylistic change that occurs once he was told Alexander had gotten the role.

Concept artist Warren Manser ("The Dark Knight Rises") has a great collection of concept art that he created for Mark Steven Johnson's ("Ghost Rider") 2003 superhero film Daredevil. The film starred Ben Affleck ("Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice") as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Jennifer Garner ("Butter") as Elektra Natchios and Colin Farrell ("Total Recall") as Lester Poindexter/Bullseye. Below, are some alternate costume designs for all three. I especially like Elektra's trademark red costume better than the black leather getup she wore in the film. There's also alternate red and dark grey/black costumes for Daredevil, which should pique your interest. Daredevil (2003) - For Daredevil, justice is blind, and for the guilty, there's hell to pay! Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner ignite dangerous sparks and nonstop thrills in this dazzling action-adventure about the newest breed of superhero. By day, blind...

Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction currently has an 18% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes, yet the most negative reviews have stopped the film from grossing over $600M worldwide. One of the producers of the film, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, believes he knows why the film has been panned. "There's a combination of factors" Mr. Bonaventura told the press. "Number one, critics do not understand this kind of movie. They just don’t understand, they don’t get why people like this kind of movie. They’re evaluating a movie like this, that is meant for mass entertainment on a really epic scale, as though it’s a 1970’s Martin Scorsese movie." Instead of debating if the film is good or not, let's talk a look at some wonderful concept art for the film that Warren Manser ("The Dark Knight Rises") created.

With comic-book movies bigger than ever before, it’s a boom time for concept artists with a very specific skill set: the ability to pluck a colorful superhero costume from the comics and make it faithful enough to please a fan, yet realistic enough to convince your average moviegoer. One of the most in-demand super-costumers is Warren Manser, a veteran concept artist who recently redesigned Superman’s outfit for Man of Steel and has worked on comic-book projects ranging from X-Men to Daredevil to Thor. “To me, the best part of the job is being able to be the blue-sky guy,” says Manser. “I can throw out all these crazy ideas and watch them get filtered down into something real.” How exactly does Manser do it? Here are six rules that help guide him.Mess with a classic costume at your own peril. There may be no better-recognized comic-book costume than Superman’s,...

Zack Snyder is in the middle of planning the Man of Steel sequel, Batman Vs. Superman, and screenwriter David S. Goyer talked to The Associated Press about the film, where it currently stands in the process, how they aren't paying attention to the fans when it comes to storytelling, and what he thinks about Batman fighting Superman. First off he reveals,
“One of the things that has been fun for us, is we’re a bit further along than what I think people realize."
Makes me wonder now if they actually do have a completed script, at least a first draft. He goes on to explain why they aren't paying attention to the fans.
"From a fan point of view, we’re conscious of that when you’re working on these things, but you can’t let yourself be paralyzed by that. At the end of the day,...

Man of Steel recently hit cinema screens amidst a blaze of controversy, with many questioning director Zach Snyder’s dark and humourless take on the Superman legend. Conversely some have praised his approach as the breath of fresh air the character needed. If the film itself has been splitting audiences so too has the costume design. Principally this stems from Superman’s overhauled hero suit. Depending on who you ask it is either bravely innovative or missing a pair of red underpants.
We speculated that this revamped suit is actually underwear, a foundation garment worn by all Krypton men beneath their armour or robes. However, even though this was our interpretation, it is not necessarily shared by Man of Steel’s costume designers Michael Wilkinson and James Acheson. Thankfully Mr. Wilkinson got in touch with Clothes on Film to explain what we have missed. His insight, we think you will agree,...

The website, Film Sketchr, has nabbed an interview with veteran concept artist, Warren Manser. They discuss which designs Warren worked on for Man Of Steel, and even discuss the Superman's red briefs, which were abandoned in Zack's version of the suit. Film Sketchr: It sounds like a dream job. What did you work on for the film? Warren Manser: I worked exclusively on Superman's suit. The other Kryptonian undersuits were variations of that design, so those were included. I've never had an experience quite like it, and to say that I was excited is an understatement. I created numerous concepts of the Man of Steel, which eventually evolved into the final design. Zack Snyder was 'hands on' in the process and provided us with great direction. We discussed the specifications and manufacturing techniques we needed to accomplish, and I even created some visual diagrams to aid in communicating the plan.

Illustrator Phillip Boutte talks about the design process for Zack Snyder's Superman suit in Man of Steel. Apparently the production wrestled with whether to include the red underwear before eventually deciding to go without them. So was that influenced by DC's New 52 suit? Not all, apparently the decision was simply based on the desire to make Superman more alien and the production felt that the underwear made him more earth-like. Famous concept artist Warren Manser was the man that actually came up with the suit design. The interview goes on to also reveal that the suit is of Kryptonian origin. There's a little bit of wordplay here, but I believe the interviewee may have confirmed that General Zod is mostly CGI in this film, that is to say, his costume is. So maybe he wears his infamous armor from the comic books? Related Content: Up-Close With Man Of...
