- Performed the first "airstep" (aerial maneuver) in a dance competition, forever changing swing dancing.
- Teaching Lindy-Hop dancing all over the world since the 1980s.
- Was a charter member of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, a dance performance team that performed in movies, like Hellzapoppin' (1941).
- Used to dance at the Savoy Ballroom, in New York, and was friends with great jazz musicians and singers, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Chick Webb, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
- Served in WW2, at one point was stationed in Papua, New Guinea.
- Won Broadway's 1989 Tony Award as Best Choreographer for "Black and Blue", along with his collaborators Cholly Atkins, Henry LeTang and Fayard Nicholas.
