The Pickle Recipe Screens Wednesday, June 7, at 1 Pm, Plaza Frontenac Cinema
The St Louis Jewish Film Festival is now in its 22nd year, and it’s to be commended for bringing so many interesting and stimulating movies to us here in the Midwest. This year has documentaries, dramas, and plenty of comedy too, of which The Pickle Recipe is perhaps the standout.
First up, in case you’re wondering about bias, I love Jon Dore. His Canadian show, a forerunner to “Inside Amy Schumer” (which he guested on), a mix of sketches, standup and interviews with interesting people, was brilliant, and since then he’s appeared in lots of movies and shows and is always hilarious. Here, he’s Joey, a musician / party organiser, who specialises in mitzvahs (both bar and bat), who seems to genuinely love his work.
But, a happy chap doing his job...

Our voyage through history's underappreciated films arrives at the year 2008 - another great year for lesser-seen gems...
For some, 2008 will be memorable as the year of The Dark Knight, with its astonishingly unhinged turn from the late Heath Ledger. Alternatively, it could be remembered as the year a legion Indiana Jones fans left cinemas glum-faced, having sat through Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
Elsewhere, Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan sang and danced on a Greek island in Mamma Mia!, while Will Smith played an alcoholic superhero in Hancock. But as usual, 2008 offered plenty of watchable movies outside the top 10, which is where we swoop in - like Hancock after a bottle of gin.
So as usual, here's our selection of 25 underappreciated films from the year 2008 - starting with a British horror film starring Michael Fassbender...

It’s been a few months since I’ve heard anything regarding Michael Manasseri’s upcoming creature feature “Sucker”, so it’s nice to see that this one hasn’t fallen by the wayside. Below you’ll find a brand new clip from the flick, which finds a nude musician encountering an extremely randy mosquito-human hybrid. The video doesn’t reveal much, though it does suggest “Sucker” has a pretty odd sense of humor. That, in my opinion, is a huge, pulsating plus. And if you missed the previously posted trailer, you can scope it out by clicking right here. For even more info, swing by the film’s official website. Here’s a subgenre that doesn’t get much action these days: mutant mosquito slashers. To be fair, there was never really a huge demand for horror flicks featuring murderous man-sized mosquitoes terrorizing a cast full of vapid, paper-thin characters, but there are some of us out there who don’t mind spending our free time with such drivel. Michael Manasseri’s upcoming gorefest “Sucker” looks absolutely insane, particularly to those of us who have a soft spot for “Mansquito”. Yes, believe it or not, that film has its fans. Not many, mind you, but enough to fill a church basement on the first Friday of every month. Specifically, here’s what the film has to offer: Jim Crawley is having a really bad day. He gets fired from his job at the nuclear power plant, his car is impounded and he discovers his wife having an affair. To make matters worse,...

Are you ready for a giant-mutant mosquito horror film? If so, enter: Sucker. Directed by Michael Manasseri, the film has a newly launched website, as well as a new poster, some stills, and a trailer (via Bloody-Disgusting).
Jim Crawley is having a really bad day. He gets fired from his job at the nuclear power plant, his car is impounded and he discovers his wife having an affair. To make matters worse, Jim gets himself abducted by an evil scientist looking to conduct human testing for a vaccine against a deadly mosquito borne virus spreading across the planet. It turns out that years of exposure to nuclear radiation and rabid mosquito DNA don’t mix very well and Jim transforms into a half man-half mosquito, hell bent on revenge. Sucker… payback’s an itch.

I love creature features, especially when it takes itself very seriously. I'm really looking forward to Michael Manasseri's Sucker, which stars Manasseri as a man who becomes part mosquito and rescues the object of his affection by sucking the blood of her assailants. MLive recently reported shooting for upcoming horror film Sucker is currently underway in Pontiac, Michigan. Produced by the Los Angeles-based company Big Screen Entertainment and directed by Michael Manasseri (Babysitter Wanted), the film will follow a man who becomes part mosquito after being exposed to years of radiation and a serum full of rare insect DNA. After the discovery of his wife’s adulterous ways, the Mosquito man seeks revenge and tries to win back the object of his affection. How? By sucking the blood of her assailants, of course!
“It’s a fun, tongue in cheek film about a man who suddenly becomes part mosquito,” said Producer Stephen Eckelberry, describing the plot. The Oakland Press was lucky enough to snag a video of Eckelberry and ask a few questions.

Babysitter Wanted was one of the best indie horror films to come out of 2009 and now the film will be available to a wider audience May 25th. The Blu-Ray artwork is left and the film will be released through the Big Screen Entertainment group on both DVD and Blu-Ray. The film is a taut, tense, thriller, which pits one innocent girl against a demonic force. An excerpt of a review posted here describes the film as "the pacing of the film, along with the twisting story will unsettle viewers" (Babysitter Wanted Review). Horror fans are encouraged to pick this one up.
