As confirmed by Deadline today, Jon M. Chu, one of cinema's premiere makers of cinematic musicals, will be adapting the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice operetta "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" for Amazon Studios. In addition to directing, Chu will produce the film alongside Scott Sanders, who worked on Chu's adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's and Quiara Alegría Hudes' stage musical "In the Heights," released in 2021.
"Joseph" is an outsize, rock-forward, expressionistic rendition of the Book of Genesis, telling the story of the Coat of Many Colors. In Genesis, Joseph was given said garment by his father, much to the chagrin of his jealous brothers, who began to plot against him. Joseph was thrown into a pit, with one of his more benevolent brothers planning to rescue him later. He was eventually dragged out and sold into slavery. In the Webber/Rice musical, Joseph eventually gets out of bondage...

Inxs guitarist riffs on producers, songwriting, a legendary concert at Wembley Stadium.
Inxs started out as a cover band playing clubs and went on to write international hits "as sexy and funky as any white rock group," according to 1001 Songs: The Great Songs of All Time and the Artists, Stories and Secrets Behind Them.
Mates since childhood, Inxs is second only to AC/DC in selling the most Australian music to the U.S. But it is their July 13, 1991, show at England's Wembley Stadium which made them legends. Inxs's debut headlining show came six years to the day after Live Aid and five years and a day since the band supported Queen at Wembley Stadium. The performance, called "Summer Xs," was recorded for a live album and filmed and released as Live Baby Live, directed by David Mallet. Later this year, Fathom Events will bring indoors what...

Inxs frontman Michael Hutchence’s 1997 death meant many still-coming-of-age fans were unable to see the Australian band’s magnetism live in its original form.
“Live Baby Live,” an album of the band’s 1991 sold out Wembley Stadium concert, assuaged some, as did its David Mallet-directed video accompaniment. Then the film disappeared, and longtime manager Chris M. Murphy spent 10 years looking for the original 35mm film cans which were eventually located in Australia.
Now CinEvents is bringing a new widescreen 4K Ultra HD restoration of the film to theaters along with a new Dolby Atmos audio mix by executive music producer Giles Martin and Sam Okell, who worked out of Abbey Road Studios. “Live Baby Live,” which includes a previously unseen “lost” track, will screen in theaters beginning on Nov. 14, starting in Australia and New Zealand then making its way to North and South America on Dec. 9 along with other international territories.

In 1983, David Bowie, video director David Mallet and a skeleton crew traveled from London to the town of Carinda, Australia – population: 194 – to make the video for "Let's Dance," the title track from the singer's best-selling album. It was an unusual clip even for Bowie, as the video blended scenes of care-free carousing with a highly politicized statement on the plight of Australia's Aboriginal people. That dichotomy is explored in the fascinating short film Let's Dance: Bowie Down Under, set to premiere next week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Trend-setter, impresario, phenomenon: David Bowie has shaped entire subcultures. Jon Savage traces the star's talent for reinvention and his catalytic encounter with William Burroughs
William Burroughs: The weapon of the Wild Boys is a bowie knife, an 18in bowie knife, did you know that?
David Bowie: An 18in bowie knife … you don't do things by halves do you? No, I didn't know that was their weapon. The name Bowie just appealed to me when I was younger. I was into a kind of heavy philosophy thing when I was 16 years old, and I wanted a truism about cutting through the lies and all that.
On 28 February 1974, Rolling Stone magazine published a remarkable encounter between David Bowie and William Burroughs. Entitled "Beat Godfather Meets Glitter Mainman", the event had been hosted in November 1973 by the American journalist A Craig Copetas. As published it took the form of a Q...
