"Anoosh of the Airwaves" provides a cautionary example for any young filmmaker who would dare to venture into the satirical realm inhabited by the likes of John Waters and Tim Burton without full control of either his craft or imagination. The results can be disastrous, as they are in this numbingly bad curio that screened at the Hollywood Film Festival last weekend.
Even as a midnight oddity, "Anoosh" has little chance of winning over audiences.
Director and co-writer James Westby has created a bizarre and totally reactive protagonist in Anoosh (Melik Malkasian), a poor shepherding Armenian with a shock of hair that looks like a cross between Don King and Brian Grazer.
Plunked down in the middle of an American suburban nightmare, Anoosh wanders through a landscape of twisted stereotypes that are (apparently) meant to be hilariously satirical.
Actors are asked to give exaggerated readings to even the simplest of lines. And the anything-for-a-laugh approach serves only to annoy rather than amuse.
Cinematographer Greg Gardiner films this Oregon suburb in super-bright colors that capture every nuance of middle-class bad taste.
