This year’s edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is set to present a retrospective on Franz Kafka and his influence on cinema, dubbed The Wish To Be A Red Indian: Kafka and Cinema. It will examine how the influential Czech writer has impacted filmmakers from Orson Welles, Martin Scorsese, Ousmane Sembene, Jan Nemec and Steven Soderbergh.
This June will mark the centenary of the final moments of Kafka, who passed away at a sanatorium in the Austrian town of Kierling. Kviff, which kicks off on June 28, will launch this strand in honor of the writer featuring films such as Soderberg’s noir mystery Kafka, Welles’ The Trial, Scorsese’s After Hours as well as Roman Polanski’s The Tenant among others.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has announced its first wave of program details for its upcoming 58th edition, which is set to take place from June 28 through July 6, 2024. The Czech festival, widely considered to be the most prestigious film festival in Eastern Europe, is set to honor one of the nation’s most famous writers with a new retrospective titled “Franz Kafka and the Cinema.”
The series is set to feature screenings of a wide range of films inspired by the Czech novelist, who famously wove themes of alienation and existential angst into cryptic novels that often flirted with surrealism. Some films, like Orson Welles’ “The Trial” are direct adaptations of Kafka’s writings; but the series also includes movies about Kafka’s life, and films like Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours” that were influenced by Kafka’s ideas.

The Karlovy Vary Festival will pay tribute to one of the Czech Republic’s most famous sons with a retrospective of film adaptations of the work of Franz Kafka from some of the greatest names in cinema. To mark the centenary of Kafka’s death, the festival will screen a series of films directly adapted from, or inspired by, the literary master of angst.
The retrospective will include such classics as Orson Welles’s The Trial (1962), Martin Scorsese’s Kafkaesque New York dramedy After Hours (1985) and Federico Fellini’s Intervista; Steven Soderbergh’s Kafka (1991) and its 2021 re-edit Mr. Kneff — both starring Jeremy Irons as a set-upon insurance man and writer — alongside lesser-known adaptations, including Jan Němec’s Metamorphosis, a German TV movie version of Kafka’s famous short story. Other highlights include Ousmane Sembene’s Senegalese feature The Money Order (1968) and Kôji Yamamura’s animated short Franz Kafka’s a Country Doctor (2007).

As the prophesied hero turned brutal ruler of the Freman, Paul Atreides is the face of "Dune" -- and thanks to Denis Villeneuve's recent blockbusters, Timothée Chalamet is the face of Paul Atreides. The actor, who earned his first Oscar nomination at the tender age of 22, puts in a fantastic performance as the multi-faceted Muad'Dib in 2021's "Dune" and this year's "Dune: Part Two," but at one point, the film's casting department wasn't certain he was the right man for the job. The reason? He was too old.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2021, "Dune" casting director Francine Maisler spoke about the challenge of assembling the right cast for the sci-fi epic and admitted that during the casting process, there was some "discussion" about Chalamet's age in relation to Paul in the original book. "All the ['Dune'] actors wanted to work with Denis Villeneuve, and some...

Dune: Part Two is currently one of the hottest films in theaters and its universal critical acclaim has already generated Oscars buzz for next year. As the 96th Academy Awards recently concluded, it was announced that the ceremony would be adding a new category in 2026, which will acknowledge an important department of filmmaking.
A still from Dune: Part Two
Given the nature of the new category, Dune: Part Two would be a strong fan-favorite. However, it seems as if the epic sci-fi tale directed by Denis Villeneuve will be robbed of an Oscar in the new category through no fault of its own. Here is everything you need to know about the Oscars’ new category and why Dune: Part Two will almost certainly not win it.

One day, Barkhad Abdi was driving taxicabs in Minneapolis and the next, he was on movie sets in Malta and Morocco, making his acting debut opposite Oscar winner Tom Hanks in the high-octane hostage picture Captain Phillips for filmmaker Paul Greengrass.
A few days after cameras started rolling, Abdi dialed up Francine Maisler, the casting director who locked him in the movie playing the lead Somali pirate responsible for hijacking an American cargo ship. “I called Francine and said, ‘I like this. I want to do more. How can I make this my career?'” remembers Abdi, who beat out more than 1,000 hopefuls vying for the role from open casting calls in Minneapolis, Ohio and San Diego, cities home to large populations of Somali Americans. “She asked me how many Black actors I see in movies each year, and I said, ‘Not that many.’ She then said, ‘Whatever you do...

As family, friends, and fans continue to mourn the loss of Friends star Matthew Perry, more stories about the comedic actor have come to light. Six days before Perry was found unresponsive in a hot tub, the actor’s last public social media post sent a cryptic message across the information highway. On that evening, Perry wrote, “I’m Mattman,” which fans took as a nod to the actor’s obsession with the Caped Crusader. While conspiracy theorists attempt to crack the code of Perry’s mysterious message, The Hollywood Reporter thinks they’ve solved the Edward Nygma-like riddle.
The fact remains that Perry was something of a Batman obsessive. He spent $20 million on a 10,000-square-foot mansion to house a “bat cave” filled with Dark Knight memorabilia. Perry also titled the final chapter in his addiction memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, “Batman.” He even devised a nickname...

“I’m Mattman.” Those were Matthew Perry’s last public words, in a cryptic Oct. 22 Instagram post accompanied by a photo of the Friends superstar reclining in his hot tub, the lights of the Pacific Palisades shimmering on the horizon. Six days later, Perry was found unresponsive in the same hot tub and was soon after pronounced dead at age 54.
And the mystery of “Mattman” — Perry’s “Rosebud” — would only deepen. Was it code? An inside joke? TikTok conspiracy theorists questioned if it was a cry for help.
In truth, Perry was obsessed with Batman. In 2017, he spent $20 million on 10,000-square-foot “mansion in the sky” replete with a “bat cave” to store his Caped Crusader memorabilia. It was the biggest condo sale of that year. Perry bought it, he has said, in part to live out his Bruce Wayne fantasies. (Rihanna purchased the property in April.) Director Jeff Nichols wanted three magnetic faces to anchor his motorcycle movie, “The Bikeriders”, which just launched at the Telluride Film Festival. He and his casting director Francine Maisler landed a stellar multinational cast for this three-hander led by Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, and Jodie Comer.
The Nichols/Maisler collaboration began with “The Tree of Life” producer Sarah Green. “There’s this young guy who could be the next Terry Malick,” Green told Maisler, who checked out “Take Shelter” and met with Nichols back in 2010. “He was very quiet and humble,” Maisler said at a Telluride interview with Nichols.
Maisler went on to cast “Mud” and every Nichols film since, including “Midnight Special,” which featured an early role for Adam Driver, and “Loving,” which landed Irish actress Ruth Negga an Oscar nomination. “You just put an actor in his hands and they can fly,” said Maisler. “You have a script.

Biker movies are almost a subgenre of films unto themselves, beginning with Marlon Brando’s The Wild One in the early ’50s and then through all those Aip exploitation titles of the ’60s including The Wild Angels, Hells Angels on Wheels and many more, notably Tom Laughlin’s predecessor to Billy Jack called Born Losers, all culminating with Easy Rider with Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson, which became the Citizen Kane of biker cinema.

Legendary author Judy Blume has written 29 books and swore the only one she would never consider selling for the screen was 1970’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, her timeless coming-of-age book that became a rite of passage for just about every girl, like Margaret, going from age 11 to 12, and probably their mothers as well. Blume held fast until 2018 when writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig and her mentor, Oscar-winning filmmaker James L. Brooks, came calling with just the right idea for an adaptation. The deal was sealed. The movie is here. Blume says she is probably the only author to say the movie is better than her book.
It may have taken half a century to do it but, there can be no doubt that Craig has gotten it right. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is as perfect an adaptation of a life-changing book as there will ever be.

Exclusive: Nine years after joining UTA as a partner and talent agent, Brian Swardstrom is leaving to form new ventures. That will include producing several projects with his husband, Oscar-winning producer Peter Spears, whose credits include Nomadland, Bones and All and Call Me by Your Name.
Swardstrom will stay at UTA until June to help transition his estimable list of clients to others across the agency. This is an amicable exit, and it’s quite a strong list of longtime clients we are talking about that he has accumulated over his 35-year career.
That list includes Dune star Timothée Chalamet (some sources say they expect Swardstrom and Chalamet’s professional relationship to continue), Frances McDormand, Damian Lewis, Tilda Swinton, Cynthia Erivo, Michael C. Hall, Claire Foy, John Lithgow, Edward Norton, Michael Douglas, Matthew Macfadyen, Léa Seydoux, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Kevin Kline, Francine Maisler, Sally Field, Jamie Bell, Ben Foster, Theo James,...

Los Angeles, Feb 26 (Ians) Veteran French documentary filmmaker Nicolas Philibert was the surprise winner of the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.
He took home the prize for his film ‘On the Adamant’ which is a poignant observational study of a Paris mental health care facility, reports Variety.
He received the award from jury president Kristen Stewart, after the star offered an extended and plainly heartfelt ode to the film’s humanity and simplicity: “People have gone in circles for thousands of years trying to pin down what can be deemed art, who’s allowed to do it and what determines its value,” she said, citing the boundary-pushing nature of the festival, and name checking such opposing philosophers on the matter as Aristotle, Barthes, Sontag and Beavis & Butthead, before concluding: “For all of us, you just know it when you see it.”

After two years of virtual pandemic editions, the Berlin Film Festival returns this evening with a fully in-person red carpet. Scroll down for pics.
This year, the opening film is Rebecca Miller’s latest She Came to Me, starring Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei, Joanna Kulig, Brian d’Arcy James, and Anne Hathaway.
The film is billed as an exploration of “love in all its forms,” and is set in New York City, centering on composer Steven Lauddem (Dinklage), who is creatively blocked and unable to finish the score for his big comeback opera. At the behest of his wife Patricia (Anne Hathaway), formerly his therapist, he sets out in search of inspiration. What he discovers, the synopsis reads is much more than he bargained for or imagined.
The film screens out of competition as a Berlinale Special Gala at the Berlinale Palast.

Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani, who is at the Berlin Film Festival as a member of Kristen Stewart’s jury, has talked passionately about the importance of art in her native country as an antidote to its repressive government.
“In a country, like Iran, which is a dictatorship, art is not only an intellectual or philosophical thing, it’s essential, it’s like oxygen,” she said at the festival’s opening press conference.
“Doing art and being an artist is something that goes beyond, because your existence, by being an artist, is put into danger.”
Iran’s authoritarian government has long persecuted professionals in the country’s creative community when they stepped out of line with its hardline Islamist views and policies.
The repression has ratcheted up over the last year. A brutal crackdown on freedom of expression, that preceded the recent protests, saw Berlinale Golden Bear winners Jafar Panahi and...

Stewart spoke at the jury press conference at the opening of the 73rd Berlinale.
US actress Kristen Stewart said “we’re living in the most reactive, emotionally whiplashed time” when speaking at the Competition jury press conference for the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival.
Responding to a question about whether the festival’s reputation for political statements affected her decision to take on the role of head of the jury, Stewart said, “It’s such a rare indulgence to be able to talk about the thing you’re obsessed with, which in my case is movies, when you’re not promoting it or making one.

Berlin Film Festival jury president Kristen Stewart doesn’t buy the talk that movies are dead. At a press conference in Germany on Thursday afternoon to commemorate the launch of the 73rd annual Berlinale, she declared that cinema will live forever.
“Take a quick glance at your rear view mirror,” said Stewart, taking questions from reporters. “We have never stopped telling each other stories.” She then nodded to headlines about weakened international box office receipts as a result of the pandemic. “How much it costs, obviously like we’re headed towards oblivion on that one. But I also think that there’s a sort of like vital, desperate need in all of us to create something. And yeah, I think when you start really fixating on like the industry of, it’s easy to be like, ‘Oh, God, it’s all falling apart!’ But I just think that there’s...

Kirsten Stewart looked confident, and downright snazzy, as she strode to the platform for her first press conference as jury president of the 2023 Berlin International Festival.
But, stylishly-attired in a tweed Chanel pantsuit with wide trousers and jacket and no shirt underneath, the Twilight and Spencer star confessed that she was nervous of the task ahead.
“Full transparency, I’m kind of shaking,” she said. “I feel, not buckling under [the weight], but I can’t wait who we all ahead at the end of this experience. I’m just ready to be changed by all the films and by all the people around us.”
Stewart said it wasn’t her decision to come to Berlin. “I was shocked they called me,” she said. “[But] it is an enormous opportunity to highlight beautiful things at a time when that is hard to hold.”

The 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, the Berlinale, kicks off Thursday morning, and all eyes will be on Kristen Stewart.
The Twilight star, who, with films like Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper, Pablo Larraín’s Spencer, and David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future, has become a darling of European and independent cinema, is president of the Berlinale jury this year, and will be leading the team of five women and two men judging the films in the 2023 competition.

Also on the jury are veteran Hong Kong director Johnnie To (Election, Vengeance), Iranian-French actress Golshifteh Farahani (Paterson), German filmmaker Valeska Grisebach (Western) and U.

When Samantha Morton got the email about acting in Maria Schrader’s “She Said,” she was “insanely busy”: among the projects she was working on included recording an album, directing a feature film and acting in a TV show.
But despite that very full calendar, Morton knew she wanted to make time for the part of Zelda Perkins, who worked for convicted mogul Harvey Weinstein and whose career he ruined after she tried to speak out against him for raping a young colleague of hers.

Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, who saw his HBO series take home four Emmys overall this year including its second Outstanding Drama Series win Monday made it brief, really brief, backstage.
And that’s because we all want to know what’s next on Season 4 after Tom Wambsgan threw his in-laws and his wife under the bus. Papa-in-law Logan Roy was looking to sell his Waystar Royco to Alexander Skarsgard’s dotcom billionaire, Lukas Matsson.
Emmys TV Review: NBC Plays It Too Safe With Lightweight Show
One reporter heard that the Season 4 was shooting in Norway, and wondered whether we’d see more of Skarsgard’s Matsson.
“I think I could tell you everything that’s gonna happen, but it will only make it worse when you watch it,” said Armstrong, “So we’ll keep all our surprises, uh, we’re obviously shooting abroad, we...

The path to Emmys succession has been a competitive one this year for HBO’s hit drama series “Succession,” about the goings-on of a falling media empire. With 25 nominations, it’s been the show to beat, and with major accolades for its actors for a bombshell Season 3: Jeremy Strong, Brian Cox, Nicholas Braun, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, J. Smith-Cameron, and Sarah Snook all picked up nominations for their roles as series regulars, with a handful of guest actors nominated, from Adrien Brody to Alexander Skarsgard.
With Macfadyen, Braun, and Culkin all nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, it was a competitive field, with Macfadyen coming out on top to win the prize. During last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys two-day rollout, “Succession” nabbed the Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series honor, with the award going to Avy Kaufman and Francine Maisler.

“Succession” may be the frontrunner for Best Drama Series – leading all shows this year with a record-breaking 25 nominations – but that did not stop its fellow nominees from scoring huge wins at Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmys. While the HBO drama secured a key victory in Best Casting for Avy Kaufman and Francine Maisler, it lost major technical categories to “Euphoria,” “Squid Game,” “Severance” and “Stranger Things” – all of which nabbed multiple trophies. Though despite those losses, there is little to worry about “Succession” looking to pick up its second series win.
The family satire had 13 nominations going into the Creative Arts, seven of which were in the guest acting categories where it lost to Colman Domingo for “Euphoria” in Guest Actor and Lee Yoo-mi for “Squid Game” in Guest Actress. The former show also took advantage of the double nominations for “Succession” in editing, while the latter bested it in production design.
