Editor’s note: Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age writer Julian Fellowes has written a heartfelt salute to his friend and colleague, the producer Ileen Maisel, who died in London on February 16 aged 68.
Ileen Maisel was born in Los Angeles, California, where she was raised. In fact, her father had moved there from Alabama to work in retail sales, so she had no immediate help with a career in show business, but it was clearly enough that she breathed the same air as the great filmmakers of the past and present. It is no surprise to learn that by the age of 15 she was working for the entertainment journalist Rona Barrett.
From then on, she embraced, bathed in, and generally loved the film industry until the end of her life. There was never much doubt as to where she was headed and she was still young when she entered the industry.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has been resurrected for another film adaptation in an effort to introduce the classic play to a new generation. But unlike the previous version directed by Baz Luhrmann, which modernized Shakespeare’s work and added a boisterous soundtrack to it, this effort, directed by Italian filmmaker Carlo Carlei, brings the play back to its more traditional, romantic version.
At a recent press conference for Romeo and Juliet, held in Los Angeles, we had the chance to hear Douglas Booth, Hailee Steinfeld, Carlo Carlei and writer Julian Fellowes chat about the film. Among the many things they discussed were how the actors wrapped their heads around the dialogue, how Booth and Steinfeld kept the chemistry going on set, what challenges the adaptation presented and more.

Romeo and Juliet: Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth Starring Lol‘s Douglas Booth and True Grit‘s Hailee Steinfeld, a new version of Romeo and Juliet is currently being shopped around at the Cannes Film Festival. Partly financed by Austrian design house Swarovski, this latest adaptation of Shakespeare’s love story was written by Academy Award winner Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) and directed by Carlo Carlei. A Best New Director David di Donatello nominee for The Flight of the Innocent (1993), Carlei’s previous English-language foray, the Matthew Modine vehicle Fluke, was a major box-office flop in 1995. In recent years, Carlei has worked on Italian television; his most recent TV movie was a remake of Roberto Rossellini’s Il General della Rovere (2011), starring Pierfrancesco Favino in the old Vittorio De Sica role. According to the Los Angeles Times blog 24 Frames, producer Ileen Maisel wants “every teenager in the world to come see” Romeo and Juliet.

Douglas Booth to play Romeo opposite Hailee Steinfeld in Carlo Carlei's Romeo and Juliet. Variety reports that the 19-year old British actor won the role over 300 actors. The cast also includes Holly Hunter as Juliet's Nurse, while Ed Westwick and Kodi Smit-McPhee are set to play the two lovers' cousins, Tybalt and Benvolio, respectively.
The script was written by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park). He will also produce along with former New Line execs Ileen Maisel and Mark Ordesky, as well as Gabriele Muccino. Filming is slated to begin in Italy this summer.
Booth starring in the Starz miniseries Pillars of the Earth and will next be seen in Lol as Miley Cyrus' love interest. He is also set to star opposite Ray Winstone in the BBC's upcoming adaptation of Great Expectations. I am not too familiar with him as an actor, but he must have some talent to have landed this role.
