Julia Donaldson’s popular book The Gruffalo’s Child comes to life on Christmas day on BBC One. The half-hour animated story will air at 6.30 p.m. and is the sequel to The Gruffalo which aired in 2009. Helena Bonham-Carter, Rob Brydon, Robbie Coltrane, James Corden and Tom Wilkinson are among the star names whose voices will add a new dimension to Axel Scheffler’s distinctive drawings.
Fans of children’s fiction will be in for another treat on Boxing day as Christopher Eccleston and Victoria Wood star in a new adaptation of The Borrowers. The one-off special airs at 7.30 p.m. and the BBC will be hoping it gets a similarly good reaction to ITV’s recent adaptation of Michelle Magorian’s children’s story Just Henry.

Over the years, the British TV networks have aired some amazing shows over the festive season. People will inevitably argue over the Christmas dinner table as to which of these shows are the best. In order to spare you all from such fierce debates we have decided to put together our list of the 10 best ever British TV Christmas shows.
1. The Snowman. As the debate about the best Christmas show rages on, it is ironic that the best ever British TV Christmas show is the one that contains absolutely no dialogue unless you count David Bowie’s cheesy intro scene. Raymond Briggs’ artwork and Aled Jones singing have ensured that this 80s cartoon will always remain at the top of this list.

Young James Herriot

For a generation brought up on the warm and comfortable episodes of All Creatures Great and Small, this series brings a sharper edge, but is nonetheless compelling and wholesome viewing. All Creatures was based on the diaries of veterinary surgeon Alf Wight, who wrote under the pseudonym of James Herriott. A prequel, if you like – filmed, like the brilliant BBC Kenneth Branagh Wallendar series, in a dark, sepia tint, and occasionally similar mood music – Young James Herriot shows us a harsher, even brutal beginning to this student vet’s career.
Studying under eccentric, sometimes brazenly misogynistic professors, in a dilapidated college in poverty-stricken Glasgow, Iain DeCaestecker, in the lead role, soon joins forces with fellow, diverse students to make a mark. This is a story of a decent man,...

Based in Manchester, this enthralling fantasy stars Eddie Izzard – the stand-up comedian and actor known for his transvestitism, who, in real life a couple of years ago, and with no previous running form, completed 43 marathons in 51 days for the Sport Relief charity.
Not so surprising, then, that in Lost Christmas he is a man with extraordinary powers. Simply by grasping someone’s hand, he can find items that they have lost, and put things right in their lives. From a missing dog to a wedding bangle, and a rare book worth £40,000, he uses his super powers to track down things which people thought had gone from their grasp forever. All he asks in return, is that they play the game in life.
But what are we to make of this somewhat trampish yet mystical individual,...

Anna Friel

Episode one of ITV’s Without You was very good. Episode two was thrilling. Ellie (Anna Friel) found herself being offered the job that previously belonged to the woman who her husband was seemingly having an affair with. No one knew who she really was but she sailed close to the wind a few times by badgering all of her colleagues with questions about Milena’s love life. As in the first episode, Friel was thoroughly convincing as the grieving widow trying to cope with loss, anger, jealously, rage and fear whilst playing the role of a temp named Gwen. Equally impressive was Pippa Haywood (Brittas Empire) as an unhappy soul trapped in a loveless marriage. For his part, Marc Warren made the best of an unconventional role as ghost.

Michelle Magorian is one of Britain’s most popular authors and it is no surprise that some of her finest works have been dramatized on TV. Inspector Morse actor John Thaw was among the stars who brought Goodnight Mr Tom to life in 1998 and on Sunday 18 December, fans of Michelle’s work can see Just Henry on ITV. As with Goodnight Mr Tom, ITV have spared no expense in assembling an all-star line up for Just Henry that includes Sheila Hancock, Dean Andrews and Elaine Cassidy. Michelle very kindly agreed to talk to Best British TV about the book, the show and her other work.
As a writer do you feel nervous about allowing someone else to bring your book to life in the form of a TV Show?...

K Kinsella
Click here to friend Best British TV on Facebook.
Actor Dean Andrews who has previously appeared in hit shows such as Life on Mars and Marchlands, returns to BBC1 this week in a gripping new drama called The Case. Andrews plays a man named Tony Powell who is accused of murdering the love of his life. Powell denies the murder charge and claims that it was a case of assisted suicide. The show airs on BBC1 starting on Monday 31 October at 2.15pm and the remaining episodes air at the same time over the rest of the week. I recently had the opportunity to talk with Dean about the new show and his prior work.
You are playing the lead role in The Case. Tell us a bit about the character of Tony.
“Tony is just an ordinary guy who works on cars and owns a garage.
