Dan Wootton’s eponymous Gb News show and King Charles III’s coronation attracted the most complaints from U.K. viewers in 2023 according to Ofcom.
The U.K. media regulator has unveiled its list of the most complained about shows this year. Unsurprisingly, most of them were current affairs-related.
A September episode of Wootton’s show, “Dan Wootton Tonight,” topped the list with 8,867 complaints after the anchor and his guest, actor Laurence Fox, made what Ofcom called “misogynistic comments” about a female journalist. Ofcom is currently investigating the complaints.
Meanwhile it was “Bridgerton” star Adjoa Andoh’s comments during the king’s coronation back in May that attracted the second highest number of objections, with Ofcom receiving 8,421 complaints. Andoh, a guest commentator on ITV’s broadcast of the ceremony, remarked that the Buckingham Palace balcony was “terribly white” as King Charles and his family appeared to wave to the crowds.

“Good Morning Britain” received 2,378 complaints on Oct. 17 after presenter Richard Madeley asked Member of Parliament Layla Moran, who has family living in Gaza, if there was “any word on the street” about Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, according to U.K. communications regulator Ofcom.
While discussing the Israel-Hamas war, Madeley asked Moran (via ITV News), “With your family connections in Gaza, did you have any indication of what was going to happen 10 days ago, two weeks ago? Was there any word on the street?”
Moran appeared caught off guard as she formulated a response, saying, “I think everyone, everyone has been surprised by, first of all, partly the timing, the sophistication [and] the way that it’s happened.”
The exchange sparked outrage on social media, with some calling for Madeley to be fired over the question. Madeley later issued an apology, saying via a “Good Morning Britain” spokesperson: “Richard is sorry...

UK media regulator Ofcom has revealed that it received nearly 2,400 complaints after Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley asked a British lawmaker with family in Gaza if there was “any word on the street” before Hamas launched its attack on Israel.

Moran replied: “Not this, not this. I think everyone… everyone has been surprised by, first of all, partly the timing, the sophistication [and] the way that it’s happened.”

Stormy Daniels claims Donald Trump supporters have threatened to “slit” her throat, harassed her and her family, and even attacked her horse.
During an interview with Good Morning Britain on Wednesday, Daniels, a porn star who received $130,000 as hush money for an affair she allegedly had with Trump, claimed she is not frightened by the former president but is terrified of his supporters.
“He doesn’t scare me at all. I’m frightened of his sycophants and his followers,” she told the UK show’s hosts, Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid. “It’s the tone that has changed from the first time around, and I’ve spoken about this quite a bit.”
Indeed, while speaking to Piers Morgan in April, Daniels had claimed to have received growingly serious and graphic “suicide-bomber”-style death threats from Maga Republicans since Trump’s arrest and arraignment.

Kelly Ripa has opened up about the “strange experiences” she faced during her early years working with ABC.
The 52-year-old Live! talk show host first joined the network in 2001, replacing Kathie Lee Gifford as the late Regis Philbin’s co-host on Live with Regis and Kelly.
Following Philbin’s 2011 exit, Ripa’s since been the show’s mainstay. However, she has claimed that there have been difficulties over the years.
Describing some periods as “very tough”, Ripa spoke with Variety about the rocky years she endured behind the scenes of the show, including the negotiations she had just to land her own backstage office space.
“It was the strangest experience I’ve ever had in my life. I was told that I couldn’t have an office,” she said. “It didn’t make a whole lot of sense, especially because there were empty offices that I could have easily occupied.

Richard Madeley has been widely criticised after comparing climate protesters to paedophiles on Good Morning Britain.
During Tuesday (28 March) morning’s episode of the ITV show, Madeley and co-host Susanna Reid discussed recent news that a group of Britain’s top lawyers have stated that they will refuse to prosecute climate activists.
Madeley suggested that there would be a “complete collapse” of the criminal justice system if “barristers and lawyers” are not prosecuting activists.
“It doesn’t work, because they have to be completely impartial,” he said.
“If these people, these barristers and lawyers, have announced they will not prosecute – they simply won’t even get started in a court of law – someone who has glued themselves to the road as part of a Just Stop Oil protest, are they still happy to defend, say, a paedophile?” Madeley asked.

Gary Lineker is currently at the centre of a BBC impartiality row that’s led to his Match of the Day co-hosts standing down from Saturday (11 March) night’s show.
The former England footballer – who is the highest paid presenter at the BBC – tweeted a comparison of the language used to launch the Conservative government’s new asylum policy with Germany in the 1930s
Shortly after, on Friday (10 March), the BBC announced that Lineker would take a break from presenting the football highlights programme until an “agreed and clear position” on his social media use had been reached.
Lineker’s Motd co-hosts Alan Shearer and Ian Wright then pulled out of presenting the show on Saturday in “solidarity”, while Micah Richards, Jermaine Jenas and Alex Scott also ruled themselves out of appearing on the show. Scott also said that she would not present Football Focus on Saturday.

Katherine Ryan has admitted she is eager to “roast” celebrities and revealed that an award show stage would be the perfect place for her to do it.
The Canadian comedian, 39, who starred in The Duchess, explained in a new interview that she “would die” to present any of the major awards ceremonies this season.
The mother-of-three told Metro: “I would die to present the Baftas or the Oscars or the Emmys or the Mobo awards or the Brits – anything like that.
She added: “I feel like it’s almost the last place where a comedian can roast and that’s because the status in the room is so high that someone like Ricky Gervais does an incredible job of letting those people show their vulnerability and have a laugh at themselves.”

Ellie’s immunity from the Cordyceps infection is finally explained in the closing episode of The Last of Us season one.
Throughout the first season of the HBO video game adaptation, fans have been trying to figure out how Bella Ramsey’s Ellie has been able to carry on living as a functioning human being after being bitten by the Infected.
Ellie’s immunity is like a special power, effectively turning her into precious cargo. It is the reason why she met Pedro Pascal’s Joel in the first place (the gruff antihero was tasked with safely smuggling her across the country so she could be used to find a cure).
While there is no explanation given in the original video game for Ellie’s immunity, the final episode of The Last of Us season one sees screenwriter Craig Mazin concoct a backstory for the character that explains it all.

Richard Madeley informed Good Morning Britain viewers that he hasn’t “got the sack” on the latest episode.
Madeley has been absent from the ITV breakfast series for a short while recovering from an accident that led to an operation.
His co-host Susanna Reid acknowleged his return on Monday (6 March), stating: “We haven’t yet, Richard Madeley, said welcome back. You appear to have made a full recovery.”
A squeamish Reid then grimaced as Madeley revealed details behind the accident, explaining how a car door had slammed into him with such an impact that it made him bite his tongue.
“I was either a freak having an accident or I had a freak accident,” he said, adding that the incident happened when he was “crouching down on a slope” while “fiddling around with something at the bottom of the car”.
He explained: “I turned around as the door decided to close itself.

Noel Gallagher misgendered Sam Smith while discussing today’s pop music scene.
The former Oasis singer was doing an interview on Dutch radio station Kink when he made the comments.
Sam Smith goes by they/them pronouns. However, Gallagher wrongly used he/him pronouns to describe the singer during the discussion.
“Music has become quite fractured and chart music is dominated by pop,” Gallagher claimed. “Pop music is alright if the pop stars are cool. Sadly the pop stars of today are f***ing idiots.”
The presenter then asked Gallagher to be more specific on who he thought was “uncool”.
“Sam Smith,” Gallagher replied.
When asked why, Gallagher simply said: “Look at him.”
In the written transcription, Kink’s website included a caveat that used Smith’s correct pronouns.
Last month, TV presenter Richard Madeley apologised after also using the wrong pronouns for Smith while presenting Good Morning Britain.

Sam Smith’s fans have called out a reporter for misgendering the singer while covering the 2023 Grammy Awards red carpet.
Smith, who uses they/them pronouns, arrived at the awards show with their “Unholy” collaborator Kim Petras on Sunday (5 February).
They were accompanied by their music video co-stars Gottmik and Violet Chachki from RuPaul’s Drag Race.
While discussing Smith’s red carpet look, a reporter with the Associated Press said: “Sam Smith has had a lot of controversy around his outfits this past year, I love that he’s continuing to push the mould, love that he’s continuing to break out from the Sam Smith that we knew at the ballads.
“He’s still singing those ballads, but he’s definitely diving fully in, into pop music, and we can see that, not only in his music, but also in his looks as well.”

Matt Hancock was grilled about his I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! fee on Tuesday’s edition (31 January) of Good Morning Britain.
The former health secretary, who was responsible for setting Covid guidelines during the early stages of the pandemic, finished in third place in last year’s run of the celebrity jungle survival competition.
Hancock stood down in May 2021 after he was caught breaking social distancing guidelines by embracing his then-colleague, Gina Coladangelo.
His appearance on I’m a Celebrity resulted in him having the Tory whip suspended, as he also received a fierce backlash from public figures and TV viewers.
More recently, it was revealed that he received £330,000 for his participation in the show – £10,000 of which he donated to charity.
On Tuesday’s edition of ITV1’s morning news programme, Hancock denied that money was the primary factor in his choice to appear on I’m a Celebrity.

Cindy Williams, the “Shirley” half of the hit television sitcom Laverne & Shirley, has died after a brief illness at age 75, according to a statement from her family
Her children, Zak and Emily Hudson, said in a statement to the Associated Press that the passing of their “kind, hilarious mother” has brought the family “insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed”.
“Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. She was one of a kind, beautiful, generous and possessed a brilliant sense of humor and a glittering spirit that everyone loved,” according to the statement.
Williams, who starred opposite Penny Marshall’s Laverne on the iconic eight-season sitcom, also starred in classics American Graffiti and the Best Picture-nominated 1974 thriller The Conversation.

We watch Sam Smith arrive at an old castle. Within seconds, they’re inside, surrounded by provocatively dressed dancers undulating suggestively. Smith stands at the centre, tassels on their nipples. Streams of water bounce off their face. In a nearby room, leather-clad BDSMers thrust amorously atop beds. I suppose it’s no wonder Smith’s latest music video, for the disco-inflected track “I’m Not Here to Make Friends”, has got people up in arms. It’s a raunchy, unabashed display of sexuality. Some have branded it “pornography” – but they’re wrong. It’s an accusation that reeks of homophobia.
The track itself isn’t the issue. “I’m Not Here to Make Friends” has pretty innocuous lyrics – tamely horny lines about looking to pull in a nightclub. Smith’s video, too, shouldn’t really have raised too many eyebrows: the non-binary English singer was simply embracing the kind of in-your-face,...

Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek have addressed whether or not they plan to allow each of their daughters to watch Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
Hayek, 56, stars in the forthcoming dance sequel as as a new love interest for Tatum’s Mike. The film trilogy is inspired by Tatum’s experience working as a male stripper in Tampa, Florida, at age 18.
The movie has already received an R rating for sexual material and language, restricting viewers under the age of 17 from seeing it without the accompaniment of a parent or adult guardian.
During a new interview with Good Morning America’s Janai Norman, Hayek and Tatum were asked if they would “let [their daughters] watch the movie”.
“I don’t think it’s about letting them,” the 42-year-old Step Up star laughed. “You know, they’re going to do what they’re going to do.

Managers at independent music venue The Craufurd Arms say they have seen unprecedented increases in running costs.
Max Harvey from the venue in Wolverton, Milton Keynes, said that the “real threat” to the venue was the energy bills.
The co-runner was speaking to the BBC as part of Independent Venues Week, an annual seven-day period dedicated to highlighting the importance of independent venues across the country.
Harvey explained that the venue had just scraped through the pandemic by relying on public donations and arts council funding, but now they were facing even more challenges.
"Now the biggest threat is rising costs. Energy bills are just insane," Harvey told the BBC.
The venue runner said that their electricity costs had gone up by as much as £56,000 annually.
"Our electricity has quadrupled from £16,000 a year to £72,000 a year - that’s not including gas and water which have both doubled,” he said.

Idris Elba! Kim Kardashian! Ariana Grande! Greta Thunberg! Rihanna! Adele! The cast list of ITV’s new comedy is impeccable. It would be right up there with Glengarry Glen Ross or Pulp Fiction if it weren’t for one snag: those famous faces appear only via deep fake technology, which super-imposes their beloved features onto the profiles of actors (who are doing middling vocal impressions of them). M3GAN, 2023’s newest horror sci-fi to release in cinemas, has shattered box office expectations and received widespread critical acclaim.
The thriller stars Get Out’s Allison Williams as genius roboticist Gemma who becomes the unexpected caretaker of her eight-year-old niece. When Gemma gives her niece a prototype of her new AI doll, M3GAN, the results are nightmarish.
Since its theatrical release over the weekend (6 January), the film has garnered a critics score of 94 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.
While horror films are notorious for failing to impress critics, M3GAN seems to have subverted the genre’s typical pitfalls.
So, what exactly is it that some of the top critics are loving about the movie?
“It’s incisive, sardonic and totally mean-spirited,” The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey writes in her four-star review. “Picture the Mean Girls queen bee Regina George if someone had given her a knife and a death wish.

Richard Madeley has called out Prince Harry after he refuted the suggestion that he or Meghan called the royal family racist during their 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview.
On Sunday (8 January), the royal sat down for an interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby ahead of the release of his memoir Spare this week.
You can read more of the biggest revelations from the interview here.
As part of the interview, Bradby asked Harry about the 2021 interview with Winfrey, in which he and Meghan Markle claimed conversations had taken place in the royal family about “how dark” their son Archie’s skin would be.
However, Harry denied that they had ever called the monarchy racist, interjecting: “No. The British press said that, right? Did Meghan ever mention ‘they’re racists’?”
â.â.During Monday’s (9 January) episode of Good Morning Britain, Madeley questioned why Harry allowed the “accusations of racism” against the royal family to continue.

Richard Madeley has responded to the backlash that followed his interview with trade unionist Mick Lynch.
In December, the Good Morning Britain anchor was widely criticised for his conduct while talking to Lynch, the secretary general of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (Rmt).
During a discussion about rail strikes around the Christmas period, Madeley repeatedly interrupted Lynch and ultimately told him to “jog on”, after a debate on when the “real” start of the festive season was.
Many viewers were unimpressed with the presenter’s behaviour towards the interviewee, with some going as far as branding the segment “pathetic” and “unprofessional” on social media.
Ahead of another televised conversation with Lynch, Madeley defended his much-maligned interview on Tuesday’s (3 January) edition of the morning news programme.
“When [interviewees] don’t answer the question, therefore I have to interrupt them, because they haven’t answered your question,” he explained.

Broadcasting standards watchdog Ofcom has revealed the 10 most complained about TV moments of 2022.
Topping the ranking was Love Island, which received 2,630 complaints over “alleged misogynistic bullying” in its 17 July episode.
I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! came in second, with 1,890 people objecting to the inclusion of disgraced Tory MP Matt Hancock in the series.
Jordan Gray’s appearance on Friday Night Live prompted the third-highest number of complaints, while Love Island appeared again in the fourth spot, thanks to “alleged misogynistic and bullying behaviour by some contestants in the villa”.
The data does not include complaints lodged against programmes aired on the BBC. Complaints against the BBC are made directly to the broadcaster.
In an article shared on its website, Ofcom explained: “Over the year, we received 36,543 complaints about over 9,500 issues, and completed 74 broadcast standards investigations. We found in 66 of these cases that our rules had been broken.

Good Morning Britain viewers are confused after ambient music played over the NHS strike debate this morning.
The music was played during a panel discussion that included Daily Mail editor Andrew Pierce and Dr Vivek Trivedi, who were speaking about the junior doctor’s strike ballot.
Soon after the interruption, Gmb’s official Twitter page ended up posting original clips of the debate where Dr Trivedi, who is the BMA junior doctors committee co-chair, said: “Poor pay and working conditions are causing doctors to leave the profession or move abroad.”
Gmb hosts Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins have also issued an apology for the glitch.
Many nurses throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland are striking as they demand a pay rise of 5 per cent above the Rpi inflation rate.
The first strike was conducted on 15 December and the second one is set to be held on Tuesday (20 December).
