After 16 years, Eli Roth finally expands his faux Grindhouse trailer into feature form in Thanksgiving. Instead of building his quintessential slasher around the grainy Grindhouse anesthetic, however, he brings the classic-style slasher into the modern world. It results in a holiday horror effort that captures the lean, mean, and gory spirit of early aughts horror.
Borrowing a page from the golden era of slashers, Thanksgiving begins with an inciting tragedy: a Black Friday riot. What starts as a warm holiday gathering quickly gives way to a big box store bloodbath when Jessica’s (Nell Verlaque) friends sneak ahead of the masses gathering outside. While the teens mostly walk away unscathed, the event leaves Plymouth scarred. One year later, not everyone has moved on. Jessica and her friends attempt to reconnect for the holidays and move past the harrowing events, but a killer named John Carver won’t let them.

With the long-awaited release of Universal and Blumhouse's adaptation of "Five Nights at Freddy's" coming this Halloween, horror fans unfamiliar with the long-running video game series of the same name have been trying to catch up on all of the lore in preparation. The original point-and-click survival horror game is extremely easy to understand (be a security guard and don't die from evil animatronics coming to life to kill you) but has since expanded to 13 games and 32 books/graphic novels. That's a hell of a lot of ground to cover, and an impossibility for a single film to capture. With both the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild -- American Federation of Television and Radio Artists currently on a dual strike until the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers provides an acceptable contract for both unions, there hasn't been a whole lot of information released regarding the film.

Maple Syrup Massacre is an editorial series where Joe Lipsett dissects the themes, conventions and contributions of new and classic Canadian horror films. Spoilers follow…
In the first two entries of this series – on Adam MacDonald’s Backcountry and Grant Harvey’s Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning – we spent a fair amount of time talking about the Canadian relationship to wilderness.
The outdoors – whether it be woods, open plains, mountain ranges, or desert valleys – has a mythic quality in Western and horror films. For Canadians, the wilderness is a massive part of our identity: the country has a relatively small population in a massive geographical region of 9M square kilometers.
For reference, that’s 3.9 people per square kilometer, compared to the US’s 35.3. So yeah, we’re a fairly small population in a giant geographical area.

Nine years ago, actor Adam MacDonald made his feature writing and directing debut with an entertaining survival thriller called Backcountry (watch it Here), which starred Missy Peregrym as a woman lost in the wilderness and menaced by a bear. Two and a half years ago, we heard that MacDonald and Peregrym were going to be teaming up for a new survival thriller called Out Come the Wolves – which, as you might guess from the title, will have Peregrym facing off with a pack of ravenous wolves. Now Variety has confirmed that filming is now underway.
MacDonald is directing Out Come the Wolves from a screenplay by Enuka Okuma, based on a story they crafted with actor Joris Jarsky of God’s Country. The story centers on a woman who brings her male best friend to meet her fiancé at her family’s secluded family cabin in the woods. As tensions grow between the two men,...

Synopsis: "Slasher: Ripper takes the franchise back in time to the late 19th century and follows Basil Garvey (McCormack), a charismatic tycoon whose success is only rivaled by his ruthlessness, as he oversees a city on the cusp of a new century, and a social upheaval that will see its streets run red with blood. There’s a killer stalking the mean streets, but instead of targeting the poor and downtrodden like Jack the Ripper, The Widow is meting out justice against the rich and powerful. (Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Matt says hell naw to nature thanks to "Backcountry.")
In honor of "Cocaine Bear," let's look back on a mid-2010s wildlife horror film that shows what bears are capable of without drug enhancements. Humans love to connect with nature, pitching tents and roughing it deep within forestation, but we forget we're visitors to occupied territories. Deers might flee in fear, rabbits might scamper away, but bears are better experienced on your movie screens as drug smuggler punishers. Movies like "Backcountry" remind us what makes an animal wild, especially bears who can end some lives with a few paw swipes.
Adam MacDonald does well to represent the foolishness of campers who consider themselves outdoorsy just because they bought some all-weather equipment.

Camping has a way of making people act unlike themselves. Once the Great Outdoors come into view, power dynamics can shift and that usual sense of self-preservation may or may no longer be intact. That’s certainly what happened when one couple went camping in Backcountry, a film inspired by a 2005 incident in Missinaibi Provincial Park. After arriving at their destination one fateful weekend, the protagonists of this 2014 Canadian horror story gradually succumb to both personal stressors and their merciless surroundings.
In Backcountry, Alex (Jeff Roop) was excited to show girlfriend Jenn (Missy Peregrym) Blackfoot Trail until they’re told the area is closed off for the season. Alex, who had already refused to take a map from the park ranger (Nicholas Campbell), doesn’t verbally state his intentions, but they’re not hard to figure out. The series, which has been renewed for its fifth season, is heading back in time to the late 19th century — there’s a killer stalking the mean streets, but instead of targeting the poor and downtrodden like Jack the Ripper, The Widow is meting out justice against the rich and powerful. The only person standing in the way of this killer is the newly promoted detective, Kenneth Rijkers, whose ironclad belief in justice may wind up being yet another victim.
McCormack will play Basil Garvey, a charismatic tycoon whose success is only rivaled by his ruthlessness, as he oversees...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month I have a very interesting treat. Those who remember my interview with Alexandra West about the movie Pyewacket know we both loved it, so this month I’m thrilled to have a chat with the film’s director, Adam MacDonald, who you might also know from his film Backcountry and the third season of Slasher.
For this month’s film, we’re taking a look at MacDonald’s favorite of all time, a South Korean thriller from Hong-jin Na called The Chaser (2008). Now, I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical based on the synopsis provided by IMDb: A disgraced ex-policeman who runs a small ring of prostitutes finds himself in a race against time when one of his women goes missing.
From that synopsis I was expecting something overly stylized and action-oriented like Taken,...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where I’m celebrating the Halloween season with one hell of a creepy movie courtesy of Alexandra West. You may know West as one half of the Faculty of Horror podcast, author of Films of the New French Extremity and The 1990s Teen Horror Cycle, and prolific contributor to a list of major horror outlets too long to count. Think of West as that teacher that everyone likes because she doesn’t ham it up with goofy schtick, and she explores complex topics in a way that always seems to make sense.
West chose a perfectly moody, demonic yarn for October in Adam MacDonald’s 2018 horror film Pyewacket. The film follows Leah Reyes (Nicole Muñoz), a teenage girl at odds with her mother (Laurie Holden) following the death of Leah’s father. Leah is brooding and moody, finding comfort in her...

Former Sky One and Sky Living programming chief Adam MacDonald has joined Possessed, and will be the ITV-owned production banner’s first chair. The U.K.-based unscripted producer has also hired Lesley Davies, former head of international production at Warner Bros. She will head up production.

Possessed, the ITV Studios-backed company behind Nickelodeon gameshow Keep It Spotless, has brought in former Sky exec Adam MacDonald as chairman and scored a bumper order for ITV format 5 Gold Rings.
The label, which is run by former Deal or No Deal exec producer and “banker” Glenn Hugill, has secured two more runs of 5 Gold Rings, the primetime ITV gameshow hosted by Philip Schofield.
The show, which was previously piloted in the U.S. by NBC, is a physical game show that’s played out on a giant interactive Led floor. Players are given a quintet of rings and must answer questions over five levels. A projection on the floor forms the basis of each question. Players must put the rings on the correct answer, but the rings become smaller throughout the game making it more challenging. At-home viewers are also able to ring answers on their phone and become part of the experience.

Despite horror’s thematic binding to the world’s most prominent fears – this a year of parental devastation and horrors inside family units – my top genre films from 2018 still revel in variety: arachnid puppets, Nazi experiments, zombie musicals alike. Such morbid creativity would stick out like a sore severed thumb any other year, but in 2018? You could drown out aforementioned absurdity with Nicolas Cage’s descent into occult revenge madness alone.
As I said, it’s been a wild year for horror – and a damn fine one at that.
My ranking comes after killing many darlings, given my final tally of 118 seen horror movies this year. Dig deeper, past these listed twenty, and you’ll still find plenty of gems. The following treasures just shine a little brighter and demand more attention. Feature debuts, streaming darlings, mainstream nightmares, they’re all here. IFC Midnight and Scream Factory are releasing a ridiculous amount of films this summer, and one of them is Pyewacket, actor/director Adam MacDonald's second feature after Backcountry. Mom/Mrs. Reyes and teenage Leah are struggling in the aftermath of the death of the husband/father of the family. Mom decides she's had enough of drinking too much red wine and crying in bed, and decides to sell the house and leave behind all those memories, much to the chagrin of Leah, who is understandably upset. But she's so upset that she conjures a demon (the laughably named Pyewacket) to kill her mom. Anything that happens thereafter is Leah's fault, so I can't really feel too...

Sky has initiated a restructure that will see the removal of standalone Channel Head roles from the Entertainment group. Going forward, the strategic direction of the channels will be set by Sky Entertainment Director of Programs Zai Bennett and the programming team. All commissioning and acquisitions will be handled by Bennett and the individual genre heads. The move is designed to streamline the decision-making process under a flatter and more efficient structure.

The unusual title wasn’t the only reason I have been interested in watching Pyewacket for a while now. Everything I have read about the movie on social media, from people I trust the opinion of, has been positive, so I was very much looking forward to it.
The best horror movies, in fact the best movies, create characters and relationships that you care about, relate to and want to watch unfold. Pyewacket does all of this. The main relationship is between Leah, played by Nicole Munoz, and her mother, played by Laurie Holden. Like many mother/daughter relationships it is a very love/hate one. After the death of their father and husband, both women are dealing with the situation in different ways. Leah is listening to angry...

Forget teen-friendly jump scares and Ouija board pranks – this the real deal, that goes deep into the dark heart of the occult. From the producer of cult hits The Void and The Witch, Pyewacket can take its place alongside those other-wordly modern horror classics.
Adam MacDonald, who directed the impressive killer bear thriller Backcountry, has crafted a deliciously taut slow burner, with outstanding central performances from Nicole Munoz as witchcraft-obsessed teenager Leah, and The Walking Dead’s Laurie Holden as her mother. As surprising as it is inventive, the film plants a seed of dread from the moment teenager Leah performs an occult ritual in the woods, building to an excruciating climax that will do for...

Out today in limited theaters and on various VOD platforms is writer/director Adam MacDonald’s stunning occult-fueled thriller, Pyewacket, which is centered on a teenager named Leah (Nicole Muñoz) and her mom (Laurie Holden), who have been coping with a recent family tragedy in very different ways. Their inability to communicate drives a wedge between them, with Leah utilizing the dark arts as a coping mechanism, and as you can probably guess, no good can come from the angsty teen summoning demons to do her bidding.
Daily Dead recently spoke to MacDonald, Muñoz, and Holden about their experiences collaborating together on Pyewacket, and the trio also discussed the real-life inspirations behind the project, how they were able to inject a bit of their own experiences into their performances, and how much they enjoyed collaborating on Pyewacket as well.
Laurie Holden: Hi, Heather. Before we start, I wanted to thank...
