With “Raya and the Last Dragon,” Disney has not only turned the titular Southeast Asian princess (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran) into a badass warrior, but has also veered further into Marvel territory as an action-adventure. Thus, the animation studio has combined elements of the Oscar-winning “Big Hero 6” with “Moana” to create a more epic, culturally diverse story about healing the fantasy world of Kumandra with greater trust among its divided kingdoms.
“The way the film looks and feels like a live-action film we’re very proud of,” said director Don Hall (“Big Hero 6”). “I felt a similar thing on ‘Big Hero 6’ and technology has advanced quite a bit since then and allows for an even more immersive experience.”
But after a solid foundation was firmly established for the Southeast Asian world-building and core dynamic between Raya and the magical water dragon, Sisu (Awkwafina), the theme of trust required further sharpening.

Wreck-It Ralph's director of look and lighting explains how a new system was needed to get something so old school looking so good...
Adolph Lusinsky, Wreck-It Ralph's director of look and lighting, actually came from a videogame background, working for Disney Interactive. "There were very few pixels on a really bad TV screen", he laughed, remembering his days developing for older Sega machines. From there, he went off to work for a visual effects house, before that got bought up by Disney, bringing him back to the studio.
Which seemed like a good place to start....
Was your background crucial here, in that you got a schooling first in as much of what technology couldn't do, as well as what it could?
Yes. It's funny, because I came from a painting background, and the way the Sega games used to work, you'd be on your PC,...

As the Society noms continue to roll in, the latest comes from the Visual Effects Society as they announce their nominees for the 7th Annual Ves Awards, a ceremony recognizing outstanding visual effects in over a dozen categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games. Of course all I really care about are the film noms, but you can check out the full list of nominees by downloading the Pdf press release right here. Iron Man led the way with five nominations and is competing with The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Cloverfield in the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture category, the category probably deemed the highest profile of the bunch and it went to Transformers last year only to see The Golden Compass pull out a surprise win at the Oscars.
