Former USA Today film critic Claudia Puig is adding another programming feather to her cap, thanks to the announcement that she will program the newly announced Film Fest 919, set to unspool next October in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Founded by festival luminaries Randi Emerman and Carol Marshall, the festival is aiming to “showcase award-winning feature films discovered from the festival circuit worldwide, as well as notable filmmakers.” But it gets better — and dare we say it, tastier — as the festival’s film program will be combined with shining a light on culinary artists from the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Triangle region.
“I’m very excited about Film Fest 919. I’m thrilled to be programming and showcasing a carefully curated, compelling and diverse breadth of narrative features for such an engaged and film-loving audience,” Puig said. “And how fun it will be to pair the vitality of films with wonderful cuisine from the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Triangle.

Carrie Fisher's strange Holland America Eurodam cruise ship performance was actually the product of a bi-polar episode. A representative for the 56-year-old actress has released a statement saying that Fisher was hospitalized following the incident.
"There was a medical incident related to Carrie Fisher's bipolar disorder," spokeswoman Carol Marshall says to Reuters. "She went to the hospital briefly to adjust her medication and is feeling much better now."
Videos of Fisher's performance have made their way online and don't paint a nice picture of the star. After her dog defecated on stage, she picked it up with a piece of paper and stuffed it in a couch, and then chased audience members down the aisle of the theater they were in when they tried to leave. Fisher also seemed to have trouble remembering the lyrics to the songs "Skylark" and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" when she sang them.

Dear Readers,
Tonight brings an end to the 2010-2011 awards season, which has easily been the most exciting, exhausting, and gratifying of the 10 that I’ve covered.
It led me to the Tribeca Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival… to the Gotham Independent Film Awards, the Critics Choice Movie Awards, and the Golden Globe Awards… to moderate Q&As that sandwiched me between some awe-inspiring duos (from Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek to Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale to Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis); and to interview roughly 50 remarkable talents (spanning the spectrum from Claire Bloom to Janet Jackson to Justin Timberlake to the Coen brothers to Aaron Sorkin). None of this, however, would have been possible without the kindness and support of a lot of other people.
Like Oscar winners, Oscar bloggers would be terribly remiss...

A few months ago while covering the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Carol Marshall of Carol Marshall PR invited me to attend the La Comedy Shorts Film Festival at the Independent Theater in downtown Los Angeles. I honestly wasn't sure I was going to be able to swing it, and was uncertain as to my ability to attend almost until the last day.
