Heath Ledger’s acting career could have surely been flourishing even now if it hadn’t been for his tragic death back in 2008 — but his legacy still lives on.
Before the actor rose to wild prominence thanks to his leading role in a Western-coded romantic drama Brokeback Mountain, Ledger starred in a 2001 comedy that Netflix would be quick to pick up for a sequel — but luckily didn’t.
Literally at the same time with prominent Baz Luhrmann and his Moulin Rouge!, director Brian Helgeland started a trend of mixing distant historical eras up within one movie. His beloved medieval comedy A Knight’s Tale, starring Heath Ledger as a peasant squire who enters a jousting tournament replacing his late master, is a peculiar fusion of the 14th century plot vibes and a soundtrack coming straight from the 1970s.
Upon its release in 2001, the movie didn’t look very impressive for critics,...

Nicole Kidman not only gave a to-die-for performance for helmer Gus Van Sant, but also almost seemed to co-direct the feature herself.
Van Sant recalled to the New York Times just how committed Kidman was to the 1995 dark comedy “To Die For,” even going so far as to say she was “destined to play the part” and serving as a “second director” on set.
“Nicole called and said she was destined to play the part, so I believed her,” Van Sant said of casting the future Oscar winner early in her career. “I thought she was incredibly dedicated to making a fantastic performance through study of the script and the part, in a way I had never seen before.”
Van Sant continued, “There were notebooks, and scene exercises, and voice exercises — it was very thorough. Nicole was so versed in the scenes that she was like having a second director there,...

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have collaborated on a number of projects together as actor and director. Beginning their partnership with Gangs of New York, the duo went on to work on films such as The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the recent Killers of the Flower Moon. The duo are also rumored to collaborate again on a Frank Sinatra biopic.
While the two have worked together on many projects, they have also developed projects that have never seen the light of day. One of those was apparently a biographical drama on Alexander, The Great. The two never got to make it, but the duo may have no regrets about it as Colin Farrell’s version of the film ended up almost costing the actor his career.

Leonardo DiCaprio turned down perhaps almost as many films as he ended up starring in. There was one feature he was seriously mulling over doing that he decided to pass on for another project.
But if DiCaprio signed on, the movie might’ve been different than the disaster that took a toll on Colin Farrell.

DiCaprio confided that he and his frequent cinematic partner Scorsese had very similar minds when it came to filmmaking. So, when the opportunity came to do a project based on Alexander the Great, they were both interested. But the famous conqueror wasn’t the only historical figure DiCaprio and Scorsese had their eyes on. The pair also planned to develop their Aviator movie about Howard Hughes.

Never let it be said that "Bones" was above using its weekly murder investigation format to put its heroes in highly improbable situations for a laugh. In point of fact, the show's writers seized every excuse they could contrive to push Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) out of their element, whether that meant going undercover at a circus or entering the squared circle as part of an episode that was itself an irreverent "Simpsons" Easter egg hunt. 10 bucks say you can already guess what happened when the Jeffersonian crew found themselves looking into the apparent murder of a professional ballroom dancer in season 8, episode 10, "The Diamond in the Rough."
Sure enough, faster than you can argue that "Strictly Ballroom" is Baz Luhrmann's second-best movie (never let it be said that I myself am above contriving things for my own purposes), Bones and Booth dust off...

The Fabelmans (2022), arguably Steven Spielberg’s most personal movie to date, had everyone talking. Starring Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, it’s a semi-autobiographical tale that’s loosely based on the director’s childhood and his early years as a film director.
However, Spielberg’s reluctance to delve into his family’s history stemmed from worries that his parents would suffer, so the project was dropped for twenty years. Regardless, with seven Oscar nominations upon its release, The Fabelmans has generated a lot of Oscar buzz.
James Cameron’s Avatar
Does that encourage other filmmakers to document their own life stories on screen? Well, the director of Avatar and Titanic, though, is not going to take that route. James Cameron remains surprisingly uninterested when it comes to sharing the story of his own journey to success on the big screen because he finds it “boring”.

Remember Baz Luhrmann’s early 2000 film about romance and music in Paris? Yes, we are referring to the 2001 release of the jukebox musical Moulin Rouge!, which film critic Roger Ebert once likened to “being trapped on an elevator with the circus”.
In the 2001 flick, we saw English writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) pen his love story on his typewriter as he mourned the loss of his beloved Satine (Nicole Kidman). You may not be aware, though, that multiple actors tried out for the role of Christian but were not selected. Among them were Leonardo DiCaprio, Heath Ledger, and Jake Gyllenhaal; Ethan Hawke was also considered for the part.

M Emmet Walsh was the outstanding Hollywood character actor who emerged in the American new wave, a performer whose mesmerically watchable and powerful looks made him eminently castable; he was jowly and heavy set, but always looked tough, as if the idea of a fistfight would not be a novel or frightening thing for him. But he also had a woundedly sad expression in those poached-egg eyes.
Walsh lent a texture of reality to any picture he was in – like his approximate contemporaries Ned Beatty or George Kennedy, a performer who could be part of the landscape and offset the importance of the male lead, often in some kind of antagonistic or malign authority role. He could be...

The musical sometimes feels like a relic of a long-dead Hollywood studio system, but it remains a genre that captures movies’ ability to create story worlds that move freely between reality and fantasy. The worst examples come from filmmakers who give license to music, color, and movement to run amok; the best transcend artifice and integrate songs that become expressions of pure character emotion. Musicals offer endless possibilities, but success demands a complete mastery of the medium.
The best movie musicals of all time have faced obstacles as varied as their creators’ styles and tastes. That’s in part because its integration of at least two art forms — music and film always, but sometimes also dance — demands an unusually high-caliber of multi-faceted talent from those attempting its complexities.
After Lee De Forest invented the “talky,” the opportunity oozing from that new tech prompted an industry rush on musicals in the last days of the 1920s.

Musical biopics have taken on something of a stranglehold among Hollywood studios in recent years, no doubt buoyed by the eye-popping performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" back in 2018. Ever since, we've watched beloved singers and bands receive their own dramatizations on the silver screen, from Elton John in the sneakily great "Rocketman" to Baz Luhrmann's fever-dream epic "Elvis" to the recent news that the Beatles would be getting the "Avengers" treatment in the near future.
In the midst of all this hoopla came "Bob Marley: One Love," a film only tepidly received by critics but one that proved to be a hit among audiences. Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the famous Jamaican singer, musician, and activist, the biopic proved to be a winner at the box office and further established its lead as one of our more versatile performers today. In short, "One Love" defied the odds of its January release...

Dune: Part 2 is an immense hit that continues to shine with its box-office accomplishments. While the movie’s success is a sum of several factors, Austin Butler’s terrifying performance surely contributed to it. He plays the role of Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the youngest nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. The 32-year-old actor has yet again stolen the limelight by portraying the menacing character to excellence, proving that he can nail any role.

A masterfully crafted work with nearly no false notes, Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson’s Ghostlight is a tender drama bearing profound moments of humor and small triumphs. The smartly constructed script by O’Sullivan buries the lede, revealing new narrative information with each layer as we watch a nuclear family slowly come apart and, later, find solace in the wake of their son’s suicide. Anchored by a real-life family, the film feels as if it’s been meticulously workshopped with the same intimate collaboration that gave O’Sullivan and Thompson’s last feature, Saint Frances, its authentic nuances.

Elvis Presley‘s “Don’t Cry Daddy” is one of the most moving ballads of his comeback era, up there with “Kentucky Rain” and “Always on My Mind.” The song’s famous writer said that the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll sang the song for his father, Vernon Presley. In a weird career move, the tune was released alongside another song with a completely different tone and style.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Don’t Cry Daddy’ was written by a country star
Mac Davis was a country singer most known for his hit “Baby, Don’t Get Hooked on Me.” He also wrote tunes for other artists. The tracks he co-wrote included Bruno Mars’ “Young Girls,” Avicii’s “Addicted to You,” Weezer’s “Time Flies,” and Elvis’ “Don’t Cry Daddy.”
During an interview posted to Elvis Information Network, Davis remembered introducing “Don’t Cry Daddy” to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

In addition to performing two songs as musical guest, Ariana Grande popped up in a couple sketches on the latest episode of Saturday Night Live, including one that poked fun at Moulin Rouge!
The sketch recreated scenes from the 2001 movie musical, with Grande portraying Nicole Kidman’s Satine and Bowen Yang as Ewan McGregor’s Christian. The original Baz Luhrmann film took contemporary pop songs, mashed them up, and placed them 1900 Paris. The SNL sketch also did that, but to the extreme, using Grande’s vocal talents to create ridiculous musical mash-ups.

Ariana Grande wasn’t just the musical guest during the March 9 episode of “Saturday Night Live.” While she took the stage to perform two songs from “Eternal Sunshine,” her just-released sixth album, “We Can’t Be Friends” and “Imperfect For You” — and was introduced by her mom, Joan Grande, for the second number — she also took on two different sketches.
After appearing as a patient in a group therapy session during the first half of the show, she was invited back to the stage later on in the night for a “Moulin Rouge” spoof, giving her the opportunity to sing covers of multiple hit songs.
The sketch created a PBS special, hosted by Mikey Day, taking a look at what the “Elephant Love Medley” would have looked like had director Baz Luhrmann known they’d be able to get the rights to other love songs; Bowen Yang and Grande played Christian and Satine,...

Not many people remember Austin Butler’s Derek Hanson opposite Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana. Still, people must live under a rock if they missed his portrayal of the legendary rock and roll singer and actor Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.

Don't underestimate desert power. Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" was a modest box office success when it hit theaters in 2021, scoring a $41.1 million opening weekend and ultimately riding the sandworm to $434 million worldwide (against a $165 million production budget). That was good enough, especially with the extenuating circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic and a day-and-date release on HBO Max, for Warner Bros. Pictures to green light a sequel -- which is now racing out far ahead of the first movie.
Variety reports that "Dune: Part Two" has scored the biggest opening day of the year so far: a massive $32.1 million, including $12 million from previews. That's close to double the $17.5 million opening day for "Dune." The Wrap is now projecting a $75 million-plus debut, with Deadline in similar territory with a $76 million estimate. Audience exit polling has awarded the film an excellent A CinemaScore to go with its Certified Fresh critic rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

"Dune" brought us the pale and terrifying villains of House Harkonnen.
