After 1959, worked as house pianist at the Metropole Cafe in New York, backing such artists as Coleman Hawkins and Henry 'Red' Allen. Subsequently led his own trio.
Worked with Dizzy Gillespie from the mid-60s to the mid-70s as musician, writer and musical director.
