The action thriller In the Land of Saints and Sinners was recently given a limited theatrical release in the United States, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to talk to one of the film’s stars: Jack Gleeson, who may be best known for playing the role of Joffrey Baratheon on 27 episodes of Game of Thrones. At some point during the first act of Robert Lorenz’s handsome but egregiously hackneyed “In the Land of Saints and Sinners,” which is maybe the 900th Liam Neeson movie about a weary hitman/rancher/fixer/truck driver/ex-cop/very tall person who decides to take matters into his own hands when some bad guys step over the line, the prolific Irish actor turns to one of his scene partners and sighs: “There’s more to me than this, and I’d like folks to see it.”
Needless to say, the first part of that sentence is much easier to believe than the second.
Cast here as a regretful assassin who tries to change his ways at the height of the Troubles (only to get mixed up with a trio of Ira terrorists who take cover in his quaint coastal village after a car bomb goes wrong), Neeson again reaffirms...

In the Land of Saints and Sinners trailer pits Liam Neeson in a cat and mouse game with Kerry Condon
Liam Neeson returns to his native Ireland with an ensemble cast of notable Irish actors in the “Irish-Western,” In the Land of Saints and Sinners. The film comes from director Robert Lorenz. Along with Neeson, the crime thriller also stars Colm Meaney, Oscar® nominee Ciaran Hinds, Oscar® nominee Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones), Desmond Eastwood (Normal People) and Sarah Greene (Bad Sisters).
The official synopsis from Samuel-Goldwyn films reads,
“Ireland, 1970s. Eager to leave his dark past behind, Finbar Murphy (Liam Neeson) leads a quiet life in the remote coastal town of Glencolmcille, far from the political violence that grips the rest of the country. But when a menacing crew of terrorists arrive, led by a ruthless woman named Doirean (Kerry Condon), Finbar is drawn into an increasingly vicious game of cat and mouse, forcing him to choose between exposing his secret identity or defending his friends and neighbors.

"It's a miracle that you made it this far. You are quite the soldier, Mr. Crawford." Sky Cinema has revealed an official trailer for a UK drama titled The Last Rifleman, from filmmaker Terry Loane. This is set for a quick opening next week streaming in the UK via Sky Cinema. Yet another super patriotic "look at what we did back then!" story about a WWII veteran – this film tells the exact same story as The Great Escaper with Michael Caine. I guess it's a story they really need to tell multiple times. A WWII veteran escapes his care home in Northern Ireland and embarks on an arduous but inspirational journey to France to attend the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, finding the courage to face the ghosts of his past. The film stars Pierce Brosnan (in prosthetics) as 92 & 3/4-years-old Artie Crawford, Clemence Poesy, John Amos, Jürgen Prochnow, Claire Rafferty,...

The paddywhackery’s as thick as the Oirish brogues and flavorful caricatures in Robert Lorenz’s In the Land of Saints & Sinners, a deadly serious thriller about violence and redemption in which a local lush pauses to grab his pint as gunfire tears up the village pub. Not since the merry blarney of Wild Mountain Thyme has a movie leaned so hard into Emerald Isle stereotypes, which makes it remarkable that Liam Neeson as a pipe-smoking, Dostoevsky-reading assassin manages to play it straight. Kerry Condon as an Ira spitfire with a fondness for the C-word adds some interest, but this is overwritten, overripe and likely destined to be streaming fodder.
While the film is set in 1974 when The Troubles were still raging, that bitter political conflict is merely background wallpaper for a formulaic faux-Western in the predictable script written by Mark Michael McNally and Terry Loane, which loads up...

Pierce Brosnan's new look is making us do a double take. The Die Another Day actor was recently spotted in full costume for the new Terry Loane-directed film The Last Rifleman, in which he stars as 89-year-old World War Veteran II Artie Crawford, alongside Louis Gossett Jr. and Jürgen Prochnow. Pierce sported a balding gray wig with matching eyebrows as he walked the streets of Antrim, Northern Ireland, using a wooden cane. He also wore a dark three-piece suit that featured various war medals. In several photos, Pierce waved to fans who gathered around to get a glimpse of the actor on set as the Irish town transformed into a French...

From a Luc Besson action flick getting a veteran to Armie Hammer getting swapped for a hot rising actor, a few casting bits and bobs to keep you ahead of the game.... First up, Morgan Freeman has joined Luc Besson's upcoming actioner "Lucy." Scarlett Johansson leads the movie playing a woman who is forced to become a drug mule but finds the substances have entered her body instead turning her into some kind of ass-kicking badass. Uh, okay. Scratch that -- she basically becomes all the X-Men combined as "her new abilities allow her to see into the future, move objects with her mind and disregard pain and other emotions." Lord. Here are a few interesting and/or noteworthy projects that were recently added to IMDbPro's database of development titles.
Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing – Nicole Kidman plans to produce and star in a remake of Alan Pakula's lesser-known love story about a young American abroad who strikes up a May-December romance with a British tourist. The film holds a special place in the actress' heart, as it also inspired hubby Keith Urban's hit album and tour, Love and Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing.
Annie – It's definitely not a hard-knock life for Will Smith's kids. The mega-star who helped kick start young Jaden Smith's movie career with last year's Karate Kid now has plans to produce an adaptation of the popular Broadway musical about Little Orphan Annie for his daughter Willow.
Apostles of Infinite Love – It's been a busy week for actor-filmmaker Richard Ayoade, who was recently tapped to adapt a feature version of Dostoevsky's The Double and who's debut film Submarine is currently screening at Sundance. Ayoade is also eying a directing gig for this family drama written by Victoria Strouse about three siblings trying to stop their youngest sister from a cult. Ben Stiller's producing via his Red Hour Films.
Sex on the Moon – Hot off their Golden Globe win for The Social Network, producers Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are now going for the "Moon." The trio have optioned Ben Mezrich's upcoming nonfiction book about a NASA employee who convinces his intern girlfriend to steal moon rocks from the space program's heavily-secured headquarters.
Bigger Than Jesus – New York, I Love You producer Pamela Hirsch and her big apple-based Birdland Film have cast veteran Irish thesp Ciaran Hinds in Terry Loane's indie flick about a small time crook who recruits a group of monks to win an international singing contest so that he can use the money to pay off a Dublin mobster.

Update: Felicity Jones has also joined the cast. Almost a full year ago, fresh off its high placing on the Brit List, an impressive cast was announced for the twee British fable "This Beautiful Fantastic." Set to be directed by Terry Loane ("Mickybo & Me"), the film would have starred hot property Carey Mulligan in the lead, with Tom Wilkinson, Christopher Ecclestone, Mackenzie Crook and Joanna Lumley also among the cast. Filming was set to begin in March, but, obviously, it didn't, and there hasn't even been a whisper from the film since. The good news is that the film's…...

Starting a couple of years ago, Britain began to publish its own equivalent of the Us Black List – the best unproduced scripts of the year. And squarely on the 2009 edition of the Brit List was Simon Aboud’s This Beautiful Fantastic. Now, after some casting changes, the film has cropped up at the American Film Market with Last Chance Harvey’s Joel Hopkins behind the camera and Rhys Ifans, Rupert Friend and Bill Nighy in front of it. Aboud’s tale follows Bella Brown, a reclusive author who shuns the outside world and spends most of her time compulsively tidying up her flat. But when she ventures out to the local library, she meets Billy, a slapdash inventor who loves chaos and enjoys dashing through the library aisles, much to the chagrin of the librarian. In its original incarnation, Carey Mulligan was attached as Bella, with Tom Wilkinson, Christopher Eccleston,...

By now, you've probably heard more than a few words uttered on the blogosphere about Carey Mulligan. There's talk that she's likely to be sitting among Oscar nominees in March for her Audrey Hepburn-esque role in Lone Scherfig's An Education and she's racking up projects in development as fast as any other leading lady in Hollywood's hills. She was recently cast in Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps alongside Shia LeBouf and Michael Douglas. And now she's prepped and ready for another leading role. According to Screen Daily, Muliigan has been cast in The Beautiful Fantastic, a fairy tale-like drama from director Terry Loane (Mickybo & Me) and screenwriter Simon Aboud. It is a whimsical tale said to be in the vein of Amelie and Finding Neverland, that will also star Tom Wilkinson, Christopher Eccleston, Mackenzie Crook (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Joanna Lumley. The story focuses on frustrated children's author Bella Brown, who...

The actress 'It Girl' this year is definitely Carey Mulligan, who has been drawing raves for her performance in An Education since the film premiered at Sundance. She's already working on Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, and now she's been cast in This Beautiful Fantastic, which will be based on a script that made the Brit List a couple months ago. Screen Daily reports on the film, and lists the tremendous cast with which Mulligan will appear: Tom Wilkinson, Christopher Eccleston, Mackenzie Crook and Joanna Lumley. The film will shoot in early 2010 in Scotland and Germany with Terry Loane directing from Simon Aboud's script, said to be "a modern fairy tale in the vein of Amelie and Finding Neverland." The film follows "frustrated children’s author Bella Brown, who only leaves her obsessively ordered flat for work at the library. Chronically shy, she has no friends, no family...

I hope that by March 8th, Carey Mulligan has an Oscar on her mantle, because she certainly deserves to have one. As we wait to find out her destiny, though, Mulligan has been busy being cast in other projects, as the industry has already seen her in An Education and knows how great she is. She was cast in Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps already as the lead female love interest opposite Shia Labeouf and has just joined another project today. ScreenDaily reports that Mulligan has been cast in This Beautiful Fantastic, a fairy tale-like drama being directed by Terry Loane (Mickybo & Me) from a script written by Simon Aboud. This Beautiful Fantastic is described as a "modern fairy tale in the vein of Amelie and Finding Neverland." Perfect - two of my favorite fairy tale films.
