Arena (2011)Without the presence of Samuel L. Jackson, director Jonah Loop’s “Arena” probably would have gotten completely lost in the direct-to-video shuffle. It’s something you’d expect a bunch of professional mixed martial artists to star in, not someone who has tons of big-budget, big screen experience. The story itself is as generic as they come — a disillusioned fireman, mourning the loss of his fiancee and his unborn child, finds himself as an unwilling participate in an underground fight tournament — though the sheer brutality of the film’s numerous fight sequences make up for the picture’s narrative shortcomings. The filck also comes packaged with a fairly ridiculous twist that shows up out-of-the-blue during the film’s blood-stained finale, one that will either make you laugh out loud or shake your misshapen fist at your television screen in anger. None of these remarks should be construed as negative,...

Kellan Lutz may sparkle in sunlight but he is covered in blood in this new trailer for Arena, which arrives on DVD on October 11. The film was directed by Jonah Loop and also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Nina Dobrev, and Daniel Dae Kim.
Lutz plays David Lord, a firefighter who’s forced into modern-day gladiatorial combat on an online interactive website called “Death Games” on which viewers can watch the fights and vote on which warriors they would like to see live or die.The film looks pretty intense and has a heavy dose of action and blood. I also like the premise of someone being forced to fight, even though it's been used before.

If you happen to be a fan of trashy and ridiculous b-movies that involve some form of gladiatorial combat, welcome to your new favourite film. Arena is a movie that was first announced last April under the name "Deathgames", and at the time it sounded like it was going to be a theatrical release. A year and a half later, it is now apparently going direct-to-dvd. The movie stars Kellan Lutz (Twilight) as a man who is forced into a modern gladiator arena where combatants must battle to the death for the entertainment of online viewers. Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) also plays one of the gladiators, while Samuel L. Jackson plays the mastermind behind the whole operation. It kinda looks like Gamer and Death Race, but with even lower production values and even worse acting. The action scenes themselves also look uninspired, although with any luck there is some serious...

Just the other day, my friends and I were commenting on how there aren’t tournament based fighting movies anymore, or at least not as cool as the heyday of Bloodsport. Tsk, tsk for us saying that, because Arena just might be our answer (okay, Undisputed III: Redemption was all sorts of awesome).

The film co-stars Samuel L. Jackson and Derek Mears (Predators), but focuses on stars Kellan Lutz, Nina Dobrev, James Remar and Daniel Dae Kim.

Last year you may remember hearing about a project called Deathsport (not related to the David Carradine classic), set to star Kellan Lutz as some "modern gladiator" and Samuel L. Jackson as the evil overlord making sure the battles are broadcast "for the entertainment of the online masses." Well it's finally here, thanks to YouTube (via Movieline) we have the first trailer for Arena, the new title for a film that might as well already be called one of the worst of the year. Remember how much you laughed watching Sam Jackson in Frank Miller's The Spirit? This is even worse. I suggest staying away, but you might have fun watching it. Nina Dobrev will be seen starring as Kellan Lutz's wife in "The Killing Game", and she can't stop singing praise about him. In a recent interview with MTV's Hollywood Crush, the actress who plays both Elena and Katherine on "The Vampire Diaries" gushes that her hunky co-star kicks ass in the action movie.
"[Kellan] blows it out of the park. ['The Killing Game']'s his movie and he kicks ass in it," said the 22-year-old. She later added, "Kellan does a really good job because as much as we've seen him in 'Twilight' and other movies, this role is really all about him and he really delivers, and I think people are going to be really pleasantly surprised and excited to see him taking on such a big role."
Speaking of the "Twilight Saga" actor, Nina revealed that she has known him before joining this movie project because of their vampire roles. "We've...

Deathgames is an upcoming action thriller with a wonderful and hilariously offbeat premise: Samuel L. Jackson is a crazy person who kidnaps people and forces them to fight like gladiators in an arena. Kellan Lutz and Lost's Daniel Dae Kim have already signed on to play two of the kidnapping victims-turned-badasses, and now THR reports he'll be in good company: James Remar, who you know as Dexter's father on Showtime, and most recent Jason Voorhees Derek Mears are also on board. They'll all be joined by Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev, who won't get into the ring (we think) but will be playing Lutz's wife instead. Maybe she's bummed she won't get in on any of the action, but with the unpredictable Jackson masterminding things, she's probably also glad to get to sit things out. Visual effects supervisor Jonah Loop will be making his directorial debut on the film.

"Deathgames." The title alone summons up awesome mental images, right? The title bubbled out of the trades last week as an upcoming project with "Twilight" star Kellan Lutz and "Iron Man 2" star Samuel L. Jackson in late-stage talks to headline. Intrigued by the premise -- Jackson kidnaps Lutz and forces him to fight in a modern-day gladiator arena -- I put in a call to Mike Callaghan, who is producing with Motion Picture Corporation of America, for additional details.
"Essentially the idea is, what if you had 'Gladiator' set in the present with modern-day technology," Callaghan explained. "You've got Sam Jackson essentially playing the Caesar who rules over an arena where people fight to the death. And Kellan plays our gladiator, who enters the film as someone that was kidnapped and rises through the ranks to become the head gladiator, the prized fighter."
That's the basic pitch. Things get...

Also, Martin Lawrence said talks of Bad Boys 3 are happening and added, "Any time you can get [Will Smith] to come out and talk about doing a third installment of a hot movie like Bad Boys, you have to take notice. I met with Michael Bay, and he said he's on board too - so it's real."
Lawrence said, "I got Big Willie to come down and see me about the movie. I felt special. We're just waiting on Jerry Bruckheimer to let us know when it's really real." [Showbiz 411 and MTV]

- I don't know who created the above image of Jar Jar Binks taking an elbow to his stupid face, but boy does it make me smile.
- Martin Lawrence tells MTV that Bad Boys 3 is "real realistic"...because simply realistic just ain't real enough these days.
- Daniel Dae Kim, best recognized as Jin from Lost, has just been cast in Deathgames alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Kellan Lutz for first-time director Jonah Loop. If the name didn't give it away, Deathgames will be about men who fight in games. To the death. Innovative, I know.
- Even though Edgar Wright's first two films earned their R-ratings with pride, I always just assumed that the playful-looking Scott Pilgrim vs. the World would be PG-13. Well, we all know what happens when you assume; you're always correct.

Whether because of the Hawaiian location and sometimes unpredictable schedule of ABC's Lost or because they're so associated with their island characters, several of the show's primary actors have yet to book sizable feature gigs outside of the series. Now that the show is about to wrap, however, expect to see Lost mainstays showing up in casting announcements left and right. First up is Daniel Dae Kim, who will appear with Samuel L. Jackson and Kellan Lutz in Deathgames, directed by former VFX guy Jonah Loop. As we recently mentioned, the story is about a man (Lutz) who is kidnapped by a bizarre mastermind (Jackson) and forced to fight in a modern gladiatorial arena that broadcasts combat online. Kim will play a prisoner who is "an artist who happens to be a master of kendo, a skill that comes in handy when he competes for his life and his wife's.

Better known as Jin Kwon on Lost, Daniel Dae Kim has lined up a new role for after the series finishes, with the news that he's joining Deathgames alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Twilight's Kellan Lutz. And as the name suggests, there will be fights to the death involved for our viewing entertainment, which should be good news for those frustrated by Lost's endless twists and turns and/or Twilight's sparkly bloodsuckers.Lutz plays a young man kidnapped on the orders of an evil, sadistic mastermind (that'd be Jackson) and thrown into an underground world of gladiatorial combat for the entertainment of online viewers. Kim will play another of the imprisoned gladiators, a master of kendo who's fighting for his own life and that of his wife.Shooting is due to start next month in Louisiana, with newcomer Jonah Loop directing. Twilight heartthrob Kellan Lutz may have lost out on his chance at the lead in director Marcus Nispel's Conan reboot, but it appears he might soon be trading up from barbarian to gladiator anyway. According to THR, Lutz and Samuel L. Jackson are in negotiations to star in the indie action movie Deathgames from Motion Picture Corporation of America, the company's first project to come out of its $50 million movie fund.
Deathgames will be the directorial debut of Jonah Loop, who comes from a visual effects background. Loop, Michael Hultquist, Robert Martinez and Tony Giglio all contributed to the script about a young man (Lutz) who is kidnapped and forced to compete in a deadly gladiator event for the amusement of an online audience. Jackson would play the sinister man orchestrating the event from his computer hideout. Production is expected to begin next month in Louisiana.

Samuel L. Jackson and Kellan Lutz are joining an action flick about fighting. The title of the film is "Deathgames," and the story focuses on a man (Lutz) who is kidnapped and taken to a big gladiator arena where he is forced to take part in deadly fights that are streamed online.
Okay, last time I checked, this film was titled "The Condemned," and it sucked big time. Anyway, Heat Vision reports Jackson will be boss of the show who sets up the games and monitors the action on the field. Jonah Loop will direct the film. Michael Hultquist, Robert Martinez and Tony Giglio wrote the script.

Hedlund Eyes Role as Dean Moriarty in Adaptation of Kerouac's "On the Road": Garrett Hedlund will next be seen in the lead role in Disney's Tron Legacy and after losing out in the battle to play Captain America to Chris Evans he looks to have found something a bit meatier, a role as Dean Moriarty in the Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," centering on two young men (Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty) who journey across the North American landscape in pursuit of self-knowledge and experience. Salles followed the route Kerouac took when he wrote the book and made a documentary along the way as he interviewed Beat poets and other characters from the novel who are still living. The project has been in development since Francis Ford Coppola optioned the rights nearly three decades ago, but is reportedly now set to film this summer.

We like news about Samuel L. Jackson. Though lately, most of that news also means chatter about Iron Man 2 or The Avengers. Either way, we like to see when the man picks up new work, especially when the project sounds pretty cool.
Jackson is now in talks to work on a new indie action flick titled Deathgames, alongside the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Kellan Lutz. The premise sounds a bit like something we’ve seen before, though. From Heat Vision:

I'll be fairly well amused if Kellan Lutz ends up being the real breakout star from Twilight. He's in a few films now, and even though he lost the lead role in Conan, the fact that he's not angling for ridiculous paydays (a la Taylor Lautner) makes me think he'll be around for a minute. Now he's set to co-star with Samuel L. Jackson in Deathgames. Former VFX supervisor Jonah Loop is making his directorial debut with the film, which is about "a young man (Lutz) who is kidnapped and forced into the savage world of a modern gladiator arena, where men fight to the death for entertainment of the online masses. Not necessarily the most obvious of action pairings, Samuel L Jackson and Twilight hottie Kellan Lutz are teaming up for an indie movie called Deathgames.
Despite being set in the modern day, the story is much like that of Ridley Scott's epic - with a young man forced into the slavish world of gladiatorial fighting, with deathmatches to entertain the online masses. Of course Sam is the man behind it all, controlling the showdowns from the safety of his one-man-media-hub, flanked by a pair of sexy twins to placate his carnal desires.
Not that it's our place to mention that this story sounds alot like the Gerard Butler film Gamer, but Deathgames should look pretty spectacular as visual effects wiz Jonah Loop (the man behind Collateral and A Perfect Getaway's snazzy effects) will be making his directorial debut with the film.
So will you be tuning in for some Deathgames?...
