Warner Bros/New Line’s It Chapter Two and Roadshow’s Chinese-American dramedy The Farewell gave the flagging Australian box office a much needed jolt last weekend while two new Oz releases struggled.
Kim Farrant’s psychological thriller Angel of Mine and Alan Lindsay’s romantic comedy The Naked Wanderer faced the same challenge which has bedeviled most Australian films this year: Opening on limited screens with minimal P&a, which means low visibility in the marketplace. So relying primarily on reviews, publicity and word of mouth is no guarantee to draw audiences.
Starring Noomi Rapace, Yvonne Strahovski, Annika Whiteley, Finn Little, Luke Evans, Richard Roxburgh and Rob Collins, Farrant’s follow-up to Strangerland grossed $26,000 on 42 screens and $43,000 including festival screenings for R&r Films.

Australia’s biggest ever delegation to the Beijing Film Festival includes producer Alan Lindsay, who is seeking Chinese partners for the animated family film Piccolo The Dolphin Prince, written and directed by Greg Mclean, whose gory breakout film was Wolf Creek.
“It is Romeo and Juliet set in the world of dolphins,” said Lindsay, who is managing director of Vue Group. Since Mclean brought him the concept two years ago there has been considerable R&D on the dolphin characters and continued development on the underlying theme of the human impact on dolphins.
Lindsay will also be meeting with potential partners on Silver Spoon (working title), which he describes as “Downton Abbey set in Shanghai during the turbulent 1930s”. The live action drama inspired by real life focuses on a Chinese family that owns a lavish department store and once lived in Australia.

Scott Fletcher and Bobby Rainsbury join the cast of Scottish soap River City, starring as the teenage children of new resident Alan Lindsay, played by Stephen McCole, a local builder driven by success.

For Scott, joining River City is a family affair as his brother, Ryan, played bad boy Vader in the early years of the drama: "I'm delighted to be joining the cast at this exciting time for the show, and thrilled to joining alongside some brilliant actors. Ryan loved his time on River City so I know I will too. I'm really looking forward to filming starting and can't...

Greg Mclean, creator of Wolf Creek and the upcoming sequel, is determined to avoid being pigeonholed as the guy who makes scary movies about a serial killer.
As a writer, director and executive producer, Mclean is developing a raft of projects which span diverse genres and should demonstrate he.s equally adept at family films as horror/thrillers.
The filmmaker has joined the agency CAA after leaving Wma, is fielding several offers and hopes to settle on his next directing assignment within a few weeks.
Hugo Weaving is attached to star in One Foot Wrong as the father of a five-year-old girl who makes friends and communicates with inanimate objects like trees and spoons. Mclean wrote the screenplay based on a novel by Sophie Laguna and he will executive produce, working with producers Bianca Martino and Ayisha Davies.
