Head Over Heels, the Broadway musical featuring songs from The Go-Go’s including the title tune, “We Got The Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed” will play its final performance Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, producers announced today.
The musical, which opened at the Hudson Theatre on July 26, will have played 188 regular performances and 37 previews by the time it closes next month. The production, greeted by mixed reviews, never caught fire at the box office, and has been struggling in recent weeks with grosses hovering around 20% of a
$883,552 box office potential. Even during weeks when 60% of seats were filled, modest average ticket prices of $61 kept box office far from reaching potential.
“Along with my partners, creative team and cast, it was our desire to create a piece of live theatre that celebrates love of all kinds and portrays a world of beauty in which joy and acceptance reign above all else,” said lead producer Christine Russell.

Since starting his tenure on “So You Think You Can Dance” 10 seasons ago, Spencer Liff has choreographed Broadway productions from “Falsettos” to “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” to “Head Over Heels,” the new musical with tunes by the Go-Go’s that’s now running at the Hudson Theatre. But Liff’s work isn’t the only way that Fox’s long-running dance series has changed Broadway.
Listen to this week’s podcast for free below and at Apple Podcasts:
“It’s educated people sitting at home who have never been in a dance class,” Liff said on the latest episode of Stagecraft, Variety‘s theater podcast, on which he appeared alongside Michael Mayer, the Tony-winning director of “Head Over Heels.” “They’ve heard the judges comment, on both our show and ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ and they now know the difference between a battement and a tour-jeté, and who’s doing it correctly.

It’s really hard to laugh when somebody’s holding a gun to your head. That’s the way this Go-Go’s feels in “Head Over Heels,” an over-written, over-designed, and generally overdone production directed by Michael Mayer. From the sets and costumes to the performance style, the basic principle seems to be: Less is boring and more is never enough. Thanks, no doubt, to the Oracle of Delphi (played here by the impishly funny Peppermint), it’s a miracle that at least some of the wit in Jeff Whitty’s original book gets through.
The storyline is credited to Sir Philip Sidney, an Elizabethan sonneteer whose 180,000-word narrative poem, “The Arcadia,” inspired many other imitations. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. If Shakespeare could crib from this rom-com material (see “As You Like It”), so can Whitty and James Magruder, who did the adaptation for this Broadway production.

If there were any questions or doubts as to whether today’s Broadway audience would take to a revival of John Cameron Mitchell’s landmark musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, those early reservations were laid to rest this morning when the show, starring Neil Patrick Harris, garnered 8 Tony Award nominations.
Besides a Best Actor in a Musical nod for Nph, the show also received nods for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Lena Hall), Best Director (Michael Mayer) and nods for Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design.
And who helped Harris find his footing in the high heels he wears as the transgender titular character? None other than one of our favorites, choreographer Spencer Liff, who talked to TheBacklot recently about shaping the musical, the early reception during previews and (now...

I’ll post my full recap of tonight’s performances later on; in the meantime, discuss! The two going home are….

If last week’s introduction of the Season 10 All-Stars added a little snap, crackle and pop to the So You Think You Can Dance Tuesday-night cereal bowl — come now, let’s all admit flakes and milk are not just for breakfast anymore! — then tonight’s decision to let the show’s alumni choreograph all eight competitive routines was like an additional dollop of blackberries, strawberries and wheat germ.
Let’s be clear: More important than the nostalgia factor of old pals Allison Holker, Mark Kanemura and Courtney Galiano (among others) bringing their energy and grace to the stage was...

Spoiler ahead. Two more dancers have left the competition after the Tuesday, Aug. 13, performance show, which featured the season 10 finalists paired up with 10 of the most beloved So You Think You Can Dance All-Stars (like sparklin’ Brandon Bryant, pictured). I’ll post my full recap of tonight’s performances later on; in the meantime, discuss!
Nico Greetham and Makenzie Dustman have been eliminated.
Tucker Knox and Jenna Johnson also landed in the bottom four but were saved by the votes of a group of 15 judges/choreographers (I believe this is the first time we’ve heard this number acknowledged,...

Spoilers ahead. Two more dancers have left the competition after tonight’s performance show, which featured the exceedingly endearing Anna Kendrick as a guest judge. I’ll post my full recap of tonight’s performances later on; in the meantime, discuss!
Alexis Juliano and Curtis Holland have been eliminated. Curtis injured his shoulder during rehearsals this week, so that one was a given.
Jasmine Harper and Mackenzie Dustman landed in the bottom three for the girls, but only Alexis and Jasmine had to dance solos.
For the guys, Nico Greetham and Alan Bersten joined Curtis in the bottom three.

Spoilers ahead. Two more dancers have left the competition — at the end of the show, this time. (Our disgust re: last week’s format was “noted”!) I’ll post my recap of tonight’s performances later on; in the meantime, discuss!
Jasmine Mason has been eliminated, while Jade Zuberi had to bow out due to injury.
Alexis Juliano and Jenna Johnson also had to dance for their lives, while bottom-three guys BluPrint and Curtis were automatically safe because Jade was already out.
I’m shocked that it’s Jasmine leaving instead of Alexis! She’s so lithe and explosive and...

I don’t think Nigel will be happy until someone Literally Dies onstage while dahhhncing for his or her life. These people simply aren’t tottering far enough off the edge of the cliff for him! They don’t care enough about still being alive… for the next 30 seconds!
The judges will be eliminating one guy and one girl at the top of the shows this season, so we already know who’s out: Spoilers ahead. The two dancers will still perform with their partners later on tonight. Crazy! I’ll post my recap of tonight’s performances later on…...
