Feeding our curiosity for what a major transgressive adonis in future literary world might look like in the pre stench of cigarettes and booze era, I’m imagining something akin to Kill Your Darlings in term of look and feel, and a perfect drinking partner to Bent Hamer’s Factotum. Quite frankly it’s got everything you’d want in a Park City indie biopic – hence why I originally circled Bukowski as a possible 2014 Sundance selection. Little did I know that production would be tied up in legal troubles. The good news is, as of last month, whatever woes existed between right holders of “Ham on Rye” and this project have been resolved. Moving forward, we can expect to see a transformative performance from Josh Peck and peak into the man behind the method, and the madness. Shannen Doherty, Alex Kingston, Keegan Allen (see set pic above) and Tim Blake Nelson support the titular player.

Right after he wrapped up his ’13 Sundance experience, Franco, the movie industry’s poetry geek, hit the brinks and commenced lensing in Los Angeles with Josh Peck, Shannen Doherty, Alex Kingston, Keegan Allen and Tim Blake Nelson. Set in the 20′s-30′s, simply titled Bukowski and not Ham on Rye, Franco’s fascination for the subject joins about a half dozen previous other films on the writer most recently Factotum. Production wrapped in March and as he recently professed to Charlie Rose, hopes that it’ll make the Sundance cut and we hope to see just how much of a range Peck has.

Two weeks before production was scheduled to start, James Franco has pulled out of the film adaptation of Andre Dubus III's contemporary thriller novel "Garden Of Last Days" at Millennium Entertainment.
As a result, the $3 million project has been shut down and won't proceed. Franco committed to both direct and star in the project late April, with $500,000 already spent on pre-production costs.
Based on the book by Andre Dubus III, the story follows three interwoven and ultimately explosive stories - a stripper and single mother, a lonely man who gets thrown out of the strip club, and a rich foreigner on the brink of committing a terrifying act.
Hanna Weg adapted the script and was to produce along with Gerard Butler, Alan Siegel, Danielle Robinson, Vince Jolivette and Miles Levy.
Franco's exit is said to be due to a disagreement with Millennium over the crew he wanted to hire.

James Franco has cast the lead in his adaptation of Andre Dubus III’s singularly intense novel “The Garden of Last Days,” and he had to go all the way to Westeros to find her: Emilia Clarke, who plays the dragon-loving Daenerys Targaryen on the smash HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. She will play a Florida stripper who brings her 3-year-old daughter to work with her on the fateful night that she ends up dancing for several of the terrorists who would be involved in 9/11. For reasons I’m still trying to figure out, James Franco has taken it upon himself to chronicle the life of Lindsay Lohan, as well as himself, in an upcoming film. According to The Guardian, the actor-turned-director/artist/author has been billed to helm an upcoming “video/art project”, where the hunt for lookalikes to portray the stars has already begun.
Apparently the producers for the odd project, Vince Jolivette and Miles Levy, are seeking “Lindsay Lohan types” and “James Franco types”, who will reflect the ages 13, 21, 30, 45 and 60. For the lucky winners, they will be examining the life of “two Hollywood celebrities”.

Apparently there’s a post on the pay-walled Actors’ Access website (a resource for gigs) that calls for Franco-esque and Lohan-ish actors “aged 13, 21, 30, 45 and 60″ to audition for a project being overseen by Franco’s production partners Vince Jolivette and Miles Levy. It seems like only a few months ago that we were all (yes, all of us) were criticizing Franco for doing too much at once. His soap opera appearances, indie films and degree programs seemed like too much for a mortal man to handle. He even looked exhausted hosting the Oscars. The warning signs were all there, but apparently when he gets bored with only 6 or 7 projects on his plate, this...

Actor-artist will direct 'video/art project' about two Hollywood celebrities starring lookalikes of himself and Lindsay Lohan
Happy news for those hungering for a film charting the five ages of James Franco and Lindsay Lohan: it seems that James Franco is about to make one. The multi-hyphenate actor-artist-author-presenter is listed as the director of a forthcoming feature or "video/art project" and is calling for lookalikes to portray the two main subjects.
According to the casting notice posted on the Actors' Access website, producers of the project are desperately seeking "Lindsay Lohan types" and "James Franco types" who are aged 13, 21, 30, 45 and 60. Those selected will then take their place in a film that examines the life of "two Hollywood celebrities". The project is being overseen by producers Vince Jolivette and Miles Levy – Franco's partners in his Rabbit Bandini production company.

The Palm Springs ShortFest has announced that highly-acclaimed writer/director Gus Van Sant will be presented with the ShortFest Spirit of Short Film Award as part of a special Directing Master Class presentation celebrating his work in film. A selection of his short films will be shown on Saturday, June 23rd at 2:30 p.m. with a discussion headed by Festival Director Darryl Macdonald. Van Sant, who earned Oscar nominations for "Good Will Hunting" and "Milk," was previously honored at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in 2009 when he received the Sonny Bono Visionary Award.
I personally salute the Palm Springs ShortFest. It is such a grassroots effort that honor the diversity and talent of many striving filmmakers. And most of the films shown move on to win Oscars such as "Freeheld" which won Best Documentary Short in 2008.

James Franco’s guest stint — or metaphysical investigation into the hall-of-mirrors recursion of celebrity, take your pick — on General Hospital was one of the few times in recent history that daytime television broke out into mainstream discussion, and it’s hard to argue that the spotlight wasn’t a boon for the genre.
Soap operas, like regular operas and (thanks to John Carter) space operas, aren’t doing so well these days. Dwindling down one by one thanks to network attrition, some of these cancelled shows had been on the air long enough to almost qualify for Aarp membership. So...

[1] Whether you love James Franco or can't stand him, it can't be denied that the man works hard. As if he didn't have enough on his plate already -- what with films including Oz: The Great and Powerful, Lovelace, Spring Breakers, and his directorial effort The Broken Tower all coming up, plus all of his non-movie projects -- he's now added Mapplethorpe, a biopic of the late photographer. The Tribeca-backed picture will be the first narrative feature by documentary director Ondi Timoner (Dig!, We Live in Public). Franco will topline the cast as Robert Mapplethorpe, whose explicit works sparked debate over public funding for the arts in the late 1980s. Between this and Howl, it seems Franco's becoming the go-to guy for historical movies about controversial artists. Timoner, Miles Levy, and Eliza Dushku will produce along with Nate Dushku (Eliza's brother), who was lined up [2] to play Mapplethorpe at one...

James Franco is attached to star in a dramatic feature about controversial gay photographer Robert Mapplethorpe says The Hollywood Reporter.
Mapplethorpe created large-scale, highly stylized black and white portraits, photos of flowers and nude men. Its frank homoeroticism caused controversy and arguments over what defines obscene. Mapplethorpe died of AIDS in 1989.
The project has received grants through the ninth annual Tribeca All Access Program. Documentary helmer Ondi Timoner ("We Live in Public") directs and produces with Nate Dushku, Miles Levy and Eliza Dushku.

James Franco is attached to take the lead role in Mapplethorpe, reports have suggested. The film centres around photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, known for his large-scale scale black and white portraits and images of flowers and nudes. Eliza Dushku, Nate Dushku and Miles Levy are producing the biopic, with documentary director Ondi Timoner making her narrative film debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Mapplethorpe caused controversy with his sexually explicit photography. He died of AIDS in 1989 at the age of 42, establishing the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation - which (more)...

HollywoodNews.com: There’s been a lot of speculation about why James Franco’s art installation in New York was shut down last week. His “High Low/Rob Lowe” show at the Asia Song Society in Soho (aka Ass) had a hot (literally) opening night, but then was suddenly put out of business. The show included readings from Rob Lowe’s recent autobiography on video. But it also included the “Three’s Company” installation that Franco put together last winter at Sundance. That piece was fun and a big hit. Actor Richard Kline, who played Larry on the show, even came to Sundance to check it out.
But apparently the creators of “Three’s Company” had only given permission for use at Sundance, and didn’t realize it could go on to other venues. Franco’s astute manager Miles Levy realized this too late, and decided it was best to...

The Los Angeles Film Festival has announced the world premiere of Richard Linklater's Bernie as the opening night film for the 2011 festival.
The film will kick off the festival on June 16 at Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 at L.A. Live. It is written by Skip Hollandsworth and director Linklater and stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.
The film follows a beloved mortician (Black) from a small Texas town, even winning over the town's richest, meanest widow (MacLaine). Even after Bernie commits a horrible crime, people still will not utter a bad word against him.
"We're thrilled to be opening the Festival with the world premiere of this delicious black comedy - a treat from one of the most original and exciting voices in independent film, Richard Linklater," said Festival director Rebecca Yeldham. James Franco, a modern renaissance man, is eyeing to direct an adaptation of Steve Erickson’s 2007 Hollywood novel Zeroville.
Currently studying for PhD in English, the 127 Hours star has actually bought the film rights to Zeroville. According to Pineapple Express producer Judd Apatow, Franco could often be found looking around heavyweight classics such as The Iliad . It confirms opinion that Franco has a habit of picking up projects left and right such as Holy Land, The Adderall Diaries and Sal Mineo biopic.
The darkly comic story is about Ike ‘Vikar’ Jerome, a 24-year-old student who arrives in Hollywood in 1969 with dreams of breaking into the movie business. The business of course is in the midst of a seismic shift as the decline of studios leads to the rise of independent directors.
Jerome soon becomes a successful film editor and gets on a Hollywood journey that ends in both tragedy and discovery.
