According to the Recording Industry Association of America, music piracy is the main reason that industry revenue has been cut in half since 1999, and the stars are fed up.
News: Et's Complete Grammy Coverage
"The whole music business has suffered because of piracy," John Legend told Et.
Last year, Taylor Swift was visibly uncomfortable when a British interviewer asked for an advance copy of her album, 1989. The pop star denied the request, saying, "It's not out yet. I don't even want to talk about it. I don't trust technology. I don't want to talk about leaks. It freaks me out. I'll have a meltdown on your show."
And it seems no one has been able to avoid the effects of piracy. Unfinished songs from Madonna's upcoming album, Rebel Heart, were stolen before she was ready for anyone to hear them.

Los Angeles, July 20: Rapper Shawn Carter, popularly known as Jay Z, is said to have removed the hyphen from his name as he prepares to embark on a world tour with his new album "Magna Carta... Holy Grail".
"Breaking: Jay Z has dropped the hyphen from his name, according to his label. I am not kidding. (Wish I was)," Joe Levy, editor, Billboard.com tweeted, reports contactmusic.com.
The music journalist went on to discuss the punctuation change with other Twitter users, saying that the hyphen seemed to disappear around the time of the rapper's 2011 album with Kanye West "Watch the Throne", and has not been used on iTunes in.

Could West's album be headed south?
Joe Levy, editor of Billboard, says the rapper hasn't promoted his album the way most A-list artists do, so "Yeezus" is performing nicely.
"With almost absolutely no promotion and certainly nothing traditionally defined as album release promotion, no single, no video, no magazine covers. ... This is a fan reaction based purely on interest and anticipation," he said. "I think given the way he's approached this release, he's doing quite well."

Rapper Jay Z is no longer "Jay-z" -- he has dropped the hyphen. And apparently it happened like three years ago.
Billboard editor Joe Levy first broke the news on Twitter, writing, "Breaking: Jay Z has dropped the hyphen from his name, according to his label. I am not kidding. (Wish I was.) Copy editors: take note."
Then E! reports that a source tells them Jay Z actually dropped the hyphen three years ago, and also that he wants it written in all caps. So, it's Jay Z. Which feels an awful lot like we're shouting his name, so we don't think we're gonna do that.
Here are a few responses from around the music world:

Now that CNN has confirmed that Beyonce did in fact lip-sync at the inauguration, will the superstar have to perform live at the Super Bowl? Yes.

Backstreet's back.
All five of the Backstreet Boys -- Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Aj McLean, Kevin Richardson and Howie Dorough -- reunited on the "Good Morning America" summer concert stage on Friday and had some big announcements for fans, including a new album and a Backstreet Boys cruise.
"Well, 2013 is going to be a big year for us," Bsb's Richardson said on "Gma." In 2006, Richardson quit the band after 13 years. But now the boys are back. "It's our 20th anniversary. We're in the studio right now working on an album. So we are gonna have that ready, hopefully, for the beginning of next year."
McLean interjected to make another special announcement to the crowd at Central Park: "Next year, just so you guys know, there will be a Bsb cruise next year, in October, with all five."
Backstreet later reconfirmed the cruise on Twitter.
A cruise!? Music cruises are not that uncommon.

Billboard has hired former Blender, Maxim and Rolling Stone editor Joe Levy to take over the music industry’s leading trade publication, the company announced on Wednesday. Levy is Billboard's fourth editor in the past four years, succeeding Danyel Smith, who left less than a month ago as part of a larger group of departures. Publisher Lisa Howard and other high-level staffers also exited, and as TheWrap has previously reported, sources close to the situation said that cost-cutting and stagnant pay were a big factor. Bill Werde remains as editorial director. Levy has held the...

As reports swirl that Britney Spears is still in talks with Simon Cowell to join Fox's "The X Factor," we have to ask: Should an infamous lip-syncer be judging a talent competition?
"I think the more experienced the singer, the better," observes Taylor Hicks, "American Idol" winner, of Britney's potential new gig. "The fact that a legit performer is giving you constructive criticism holds a lot more weight in my opinion."
Fellow performer Debbie Gibson agrees that the show needs a judge whose raw talent speaks for itself.
"Absolutely not!" Debbie tells me when asked if Britney should join the show. "I definitely think if vocals are what the show is about, then the judges need to walk the walk or sing the song."
However, several industry insiders point out that Cowell himself isn't a performer, yet he has a cozy spot behind the judges' table.

Amy Winehouse, who tragically passed away in July at the age of 27, has one last album coming out. The CD, titled "Lioness: Hidden Treasures," will feature 12 tracks, cobbled together by producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, who have worked closely with Winehouse in the past.
But music journalist Joe Levy tells CBS news there is one track missing from the album.
"[There is] at least one track that one of her record company executives has said she made him promise the public will never hear. Apparently, the one recording is so deeply personal and, he says, an extremely powerful, very great song. No one will ever hear that. That is his promise to her," says Levy.
Levy goes on to say that because "Lioness" is a posthumous release and not something Winehouse could actually have seen through to completion that it is a "hodgepodge."

After months of hype and headlines, Simon Cowell’s "X Factor" is finally debuting in America next week. The question is: Will anyone care?
In the past year, our DVRs have been filled to the max with reality singing competitions, from the revamped (J. Lo on a kinder, gentler "American Idol") to the remixed ("The Voice" has swivel chairs, you guys) to the reviled (ugh, "Karaoke Battle USA"). These days, the casual TV viewer needs a doctorate in “Reality TV” to keep track of all the various karaoke contests.
So, as a public service to fellow confused and overwhelmed TV addicts, I’ve broken down all the shows that are sure to feature overwrought renditions of Alicia Keys' songs and judges sipping from sponsored soda cups. (Example: "Idol" is Coke, "X Factor" is Pepsi. "The Sing Off" is…Coke 2?)
Practice your scales, warm up your pipes and dig in!

Perry, who just released her new single, "California Gurls," made the list alongside Sports Illustrated cover model Brooklyn Decker (#2), "Avatar" actress Zoe Saldana (#3), "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively (#4) and "Jonah Hex" leading lady Megan Fox (#5).
"[Megan is] a sex symbol for the ages," Levy said. "Megan's sultry looks hit every red-blooded guy right in the gut."
