Cross-city transport unties people from different faiths, backgrounds.
Film Movement has picked up North American rights to Amos Gitai’s Venice 2018 award winner A Tramway In Jerusalem, featuring an ensemble that includes Mathieu Amalric.
The Israeli filmmaker’s latest feature is a multi-cultural drama exploring the cultural divides that separate the inhabitants of one of the world’s most iconic cities, as different religions mingle on the Light Rail Red Line of Jerusalem’s tramway that connects the city from East to West, from the Palestinian neighborhoods of Shuafat and Beit Hanina to Mount Herzl, site of Israel’s national cemetery.

Amos Gitai is hoping to screen Rabin: The Last Day at festivals in autumn.
Ahead of his Monday masterclass here at Jerusalem Film Festival (9-19 July), Israeli film-maker Amos Gitai sat down with Screen to discuss his upcoming Yitzhak Rabin feature, now titled Rabin: The Last Day.
Currently putting the final touches to the film, which he shot in February in Tel Aviv, Gitai is waiting to hear from one of the major autumn festivals about a programming berth.
“We will know by the end of the month,” he said. “We’ve been showing the film without the final mix and the reactions have been very strong. I’m really discovering how much he meant to so many people in many different countries.”
“Israeli society is still feeling the shockwaves of his killing even if it’s already 20 years ago,” he added. “It’s an open wound and looking at the current situation in the Middle East, there...

Last week saw a great handful of international releases make their way onto our shelves, with Shion Sono’s Himizu and David and Stéphane Foenkinos’ Delicacy topping the list. And this week brings us another excellent set of international films for our enjoyment, along with a handful of classics getting the HD treatment.
We’ve also been enjoying the special Blu-ray Steelbook releases from Play.com over the past few months, in tandem with Universal’s 100th Anniversary, and now Paramount are entering the fray with two titles of their own getting a Steelbook re-packaging, for their own Centenary celebrations.
My picks of the week:
Morten Tyldum’s Headhunters.
And the Blu-ray releases of Shion Sono’s Love Exposure & the Steven Spielberg-produced Falling Skies – Season 1.

In a run-down world in which most people can no longer dream or even sleep, Mr. Terrier (Liron Levo) runs a "dream factory" that allows the masses to share a consensual experience stemming from Mr. Coma, one of the last living dreamers. But Mr. Coma is expected to die soon, his dreams stale and repetitive, and the hungry crowds are becoming restless; salvation arrives in the form of Sarah (Sarah Adler), a vivid (and maybe even the last) dreamer who soon recharges the factory. Fearing the revolts that will result if Sarah fails to consistently deliver, Mr. Terrier opts to confine and drug her, prompting Didi, Sarah's lover and the factory's "dream editor", to attempt an escape that, if successful, could mean the end of all dreams.

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its feature film line-up Wednesday, piling heaps of cinematic goodness on an already stellar program that includes Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Duncan Jones’ Source Code, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Conan O’Brien’s tour documentary, and the latest Simon Pegg-Nick Frost comedy, Paul, with Seth Rogen.
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.
Plus a few favorites from the Sundance Film Festival last month, like Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and Max Winkler’s Ceremony.
I’m extremely excited, even if I’m already having flashbacks to intense sleep deprivation. Like the last two years, I’ll be on the ground covering as much of the festival as I can within the packed 9 days of screenings,...

Chicago – The third week of the 13th Annual EU Film Festival at the Siskel Film Center has arrived, and we’re back to give you an idea of what to expect in the second half of arguably the best fest in the Windy City. We profile several of this week’s hottest tickets, including an anticipated screening hosted by Chicago’s own Jonathan Rosenbaum.
The first half of EU 2010 (which you can read about here and here) produced some memorable films including Sweden’s taut thriller “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” Italy’s sumptuous romance “I Am Love,” and France’s exhilaratingly off-kilter re-telling of “Bluebeard.” As good as all of those films were, the festival has generally been offering stronger programming each week, and this is the best one yet. Out of the next four highlights, there are at least two that absolutely should not be missed.

This week's releases arrive draped in a pervasive air of dissatisfaction -- Chris Rock's daughter is unhappy with her hair, a '70s feminist movement is unhappy with their options, and Jason Ritter and Jess Weixler are unhappy with each other. Elsewhere, British cultural icons are talked up while global corporate interests are torn down.

"After The Storm"
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Oscar-winning filmmaker and activist James Lecesne's decision to bring a production of the Off-Broadway musical "Once on This Island" to the storm-ravaged city of New Orleans was both obvious and inspired, with an extra layer of resonance provided in the casting of local kids affected firsthand by the disaster. Captured by director Hilla Medalia, this documentary takes us behind the scenes of the production to follow 12 young actors...

Geneva, Switzerland -- Francois Rotger's "Story of Jen," a French-Canadian production, has been added to the main competition at the 61st Locarno Film Festival, organizers said Tuesday.
The world premiere of the film -- the story of a 16-year-old girl, her widowed mother and the mother's new boyfriend -- will push the total number of productions challenging for Locarno's prestigious Golden Leopard prize to 18.
The movie is the second feature-length effort from Rotger, whose first feature, "The Passenger," premiered in Locarno in 2005.
Locarno made two more key additions Tuesday: the Filmmakers of the Present sidebar will also expand to 18 titles with the addition of Sean Baker's "Prince of Broadway" an immigrant drama set in New York and Israeli actor Liron Levo will join the seven-member main competition jury.
Both "Story of Jen" and "Prince of Broadway" have been added to the Locarno schedule for August 14, near the end of the August 6-16 event.

- Strangers is a film about an impossible love between two tourists in Germany: one an Israeli man and the other a Palestinian woman. The film had its North American premiere last night and in typical New York fashion the two directors were stuck in traffic. This ended up being a blessing as the charming lead actor Liron Levo and Cinematographer Ram Shweky took the stage for the Q&A. The announcement that Levo was in the crowd sent waves of delight through the audience, who had obviously fallen for him. The actor, famous in Israel but virtually unknown in the States, became an instant star as 30 women surrounded him to get a picture and autograph. “We did not have sex,” was Levo’s answer to an audience member’s delicate question about his chemistry with actress Lubna Azabal. “That’s what you were really asking, right?” he said after

- One more case of a short film successfully serving as a template for a feature length project, IFC Films have taken the domestic rights to Strangers – an import that played well at Sundance and will get a second viewing at the Tribeca in a couple of days from now.Following in the footsteps of a slew of dramas that demonstrate how Israeli and Palestinians can co-exist but there are always tensions that prevent life from being simple, this uses the Romeo and Juliet type tale of a romance to describe the story of an Israeli man (Liron Levo) and Palestinian woman (Lubna Azabal from the head spinning road trip movie Exils and the critically acclaimed Paradise Now ) with on-the-nail observations of the tensions created by a common but conflictive Mideast background. Co-directors Erez Tadmor and Guy Nattiv saw their short film (going by the same name as their feature-length
