The House of Representatives voted to protect a transgender official in President Joe Biden‘s administration and rejected an amendment put forth by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
The proposed amendment aimed to reduce the salary of the U.S. Assistant Health Secretary Rachel Levine, the first openly transgender person to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The amendment, which sought to reduce Levine’s salary, was ultimately dismissed by the Republican members of the House.
House Press Gallery shared on X, “The House rejected @Mtg Amd’t #103 by a vote of 170-254-1 present.”
Earlier this week, Greene announced her amendment on the House floor.
“My amendment uses the Holman rule (an amendment to appropriations legislation that can reduce the salary of or fire specific federal employees) to reduce…the salary of assistant secretary for health Richard Levine to $1, the same way he supports castrating children who suffer from gender dysphoria,...

In 1976, a crudely published fanzine devoted to the experimental film scene made its debut. It was called Idiolects and the first issue offered a definition of its name: “An idiolect is the language of an individual at a particular time.” That definition certainly could be applied to both the filmmakers covered in the zine and to the writers who contributed articles.
Although not an official publication of New York City’s Collective for Living Cinema screening society, Idiolects was closely tied to the organization, offering a “temporary” publication address of 52 White Street, New York, 10013 in the indicia. That was the Collective’s then permanent screening space in 1976 after having bopped around Manhattan for several years prior.
In addition, the Living Cinema was formed in the early 1970s by students who had studied filmmaking at Binghamton University in upstate New York and then moved to New York City. While Idiolects #1 gives no clear main editorial voice,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… In the moment of #MeToo and #TimesUp, this tale of the relationship between an older male professor and his young female student is howlingly out of step and outrageously tone deaf. And that’s on top of its tedious clichés. I’m “biast” (pro): love Stanley Tucci
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

Movies can take years to make, so it’s impossible to know into what sort of cultural zeitgeist the finished project will ultimately be released. But a special booby prize must go to Submission for getting it so opposite-world, upside-down wrong. I means, sure, this film would have been offensive when it debuted at the Los Angeles Film Festival last June, but since then we’ve had Harvey Weinstein,...

Writer/director Richard Levine’s film Submission is being promoted as a modern updating of the novel “The Blue Angel.” The book was famously adapted into a 1930 film The Blue Angel by director Josef von Sternberg, a film which made Marlene Dietrich an international star.
In the Dietrich film, a straight-laced, aging professor becomes enamored with a beautiful young singer (Dietrich) in a local nightclub called the Blue Angel. The professor’s obsession with the singer has disastrous results, particularly for him. This forbidden passion is particularly risky for a man expected to set a moral example for his pupils, so he tries to keep it hidden lest he lose his livelihood and reputation, but he is under a compulsion he can’t resist.
In this updated version, the man is still a professor but...

Ted Swenson (Stanley Tucci) is a living cliché, and he knows it. A middle-aged writer with one “moderately successful book under my belt” (his words, via Tucci’s jaunty voiceover), Ted thought that a teaching job at a Vermont liberal arts college would be the perfect short-term gig while he penned his second novel. Ten years later, tenure is the only thing Ted has to show for his time.
At least, that’s how he feels about it — a cushy job, a full head of hair, and a healthy marriage (to Kyra Sedgwick) don’t mean a damn thing to an author who can’t make good on the promise of their own potential. He used to want his class to fall in love with him; now he just stares at the clock and hopes to wait out the hour. “When do I get more?” Ted asks one of his students,...

A film about a male teacher getting it on with his female student ought to touch a nerve in the era of #MeToo. But Submission – despite valiant performances from Stanley Tucci and Addison Timlin as the parties involved – lacks the spark it needs to spring to life.
Tucci plays Ted Swenson, a prof who teaches creative writing at a second-rate New England college and fills classrooms on the success fumes from his acclaimed first book, concerning his father's fatal decision to light himself on fire to protest the war in Vietnam.

Based on Francine Prose's 2000 novel Blue Angel, inspired by Josef von Sternberg's 1930 film Der Blaue Engel, adapted from Heinrich Mann's book Professor Unrat from 1905, Submission links present with past. If Angela Argo in Richard Levine's Submission were to set out to do what Marlene Dietrich's Lola Lola did to Emil Jannings' Professor Immanuel Rath, what would that look like in the second decade of the 21st century?

Chicago – Starz’s “Boss” doesn’t so much reimagine life in politics in Chicago as Shakespearian drama as it does being in a mob family. Mayor Thomas Kane (Kelsey Grammar) is not too distinguishable from Tony Soprano in the way he manipulates those around him and in how betrayal could not only mean the end of your career but the end of your life (the First Lady of the Windy City describes politics as “money, muscle, and the neutralization of one’s enemies.”) And much like Tony’s panic attacks, it’s human frailty that could bring this don down. The strong first season was just released on Blu-ray and DVD in anticipation of the second season premiere in August.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
There are more than enough elements in the first eight episodes of “Boss” to outweigh the show’s flaws. In particular, the writing in the political back rooms and...

Exclusive: Boss executive producers/co-showrunners Richard Levine and Lyn Greene are exiting Starz’ new drama series, which was renewed for a second season last month ahead of its premiere last night. The former Nip/Tuck executive producers shepherded the 8-episode first season of Boss alongside series’ creator/executive producer, Apocalypto co-writer Farhad Safinia. Safinia didn’t have TV experience before creating the show but I hear he proved a quick study during production of the first season. Search is under away for a new writing executive producer to join Safinia as well as the series’ other exec producers — director Gus Van Sant, star Kelsey Grammer, Brian Sher and Stella Bulochnikov — for Season 2. Boss, from Lionsgate TV, stars Grammer as a ruthless Chicago mayor who has a secret that threatens to topple him. The series has received mostly favorable reviews, especially when it comes to Grammer’s performance.

Kelsey Grammer's new Starz series 'Boss' just premiered last night, and there are already big shake-ups behind the scenes.
According to Deadline, 'Boss' co-showrunners and executive producers Richard Levine and Lyn Greene are exiting the drama series, which was already renewed for a second season (yes, before it even premiered) last month.
Levine and Greene, formerly of 'Nip/Tuck,' were on board for the entire eight-episode first season to oversee things with first-time series creator and executive producer Farhad Safinia. Deadline's sources implied that Safinia was a quick study, but confirmed that the series is searching for a new writer/executive producer to join the team -- which also includes star Grammer, director Gus Van Sant, Brian Sher and Stella Bulochnikov -- for Season 2.

Kelsey Grammer will cut you.
That's the takeaway from the first teaser for "Boss," the new drama series from Starz that stars the multiple Emmy winner as the mayor of Chicago. His character, Tom Kane, has had a very successful run as the leader of the Windy City, and the people like him, but he's also made a lot of enemies and kept his hold on power through occasionally less-than-honorable means.
And also? Tom has a degenerative brain disorder that's starting to affect his work and his life. So that's not good.
"Boss" also stars Connie Nielsen (xx) as Tom's wife, Kathleen Robertson (xx) as a mayoral aide and Hannah Ware as Tom's estranged daughter, who may be the first one to realize what's happening to her dad. Farhad Safinia ("Apocalypto") created the series, which premieres in October, and executive produces it with Grammer, pilot director Gus Van Sant, Brian Sher,...

Hereafter (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s spiritual thriller follows a trio of characters whose seemingly disparate paths converge: Matt Damon as a blue collar Joe who tries to fight against his psychic powers that see “the other side,” Cecile de France as a journalist who somehow survives the tsunami that crushed Indonesia, and a London schoolboy (Frankie and George McLaren) who seeks answers after losing his twin brother. Like all of Eastwood’s films, the narrative construction is tight as a drum, with solid work by all involved. That said, “solid” would have to be the operative word to describe the proceedings here, as well as “unremarkable” and “uninvolving” on an emotional level. Perhaps we expect too much when we see Clint’s name on a film these days, but that’s the flip side of being one of the best. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

Exclusive: In her first regular series gig, Connie Nielsen will star opposite Kelsey Grammer in the Starz series Boss. In the 8-episode political drama, written by Farhad Safinia and directed by Gus Van Sant, Grammer stars as Kane, the Mayor of Chicago who is diagnosed with a degenerative mental condition that only he and his doctor know about. Nielsen will play his immaculately groomed wife Meredith who is a pro with the press and tough when she needs to be. Meredith and Kane have a bad marriage and barely speak when they aren't in public. Denmark-born Nielsen, repped by UTA and Principal Entertainment, is best known for her starring role in Gladiator. On TV, she did a six-episode arc as the female lead on Law & Order: Svu, filling in for Mariska Hargitay during her maternity leave. Nielsen also played the title role in the 2008 A&E pilot Danny Fricke. Boss...

Every Day
Directed by: Richard Levine
Cast: Liev Schreiber, Helen Hunt, Carla Gugino, Brian Dennehy, Eddie Izzard
Running Time: 1 hr 33 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: March 8, 2011
Plot: A comedy about a New York City couple (Schreiber and Hunt) in a romantic crisis.
Who’S It For? Fans of Writer/Producer/Director Richard Levine, Aka fans of Nip/Tuck.
Movie: Imagine a family with all the quirks a family could possibly have, then amp all those quirks up a few notches, and what you’ll end up with will greatly resemble the family that Every Day centers upon. There’s plenty of comedy here, but so is there stress. It’s a full-on dramady in that respect.
With the many true-to-life conflicts presented here, one typically has two choices — to laugh or to cry. Every Day chooses to laugh, and the many serious subjects — a heterosexual father’s struggles...

"The Man From Nowhere" (2010)
Directed by Lee Jeong-beom
Released by Well Go USA
Matt Singer said there's a sequence in this Korean revenge thriller that has "already taken up permanent residence in the Movie Hall of Fame section of my brain," so what more do you need? "Mother" star Won Bin stars as the man who is framed by local gangsters and seeks to retrieve the young girl he lives next door to after she's been kidnapped.
"Abducted" (2011)
Directed by Jon Bonnell
Released by Brain Damage Films
Originally called "Match.Dead," this 2009 thriller details the perils of online dating when a teen girl (Kathleen Benner) arranges a date with a man she soon learns is a psychopath (James Ray). Alan Smithee is the credited screenwriter on IMDb, so one might not want to go in with high expectations.

“127 Hours” (Fox Searchlight, R) — This true story of a mountain climber who gets pinned in a crevasse by a boulder earned raves (and an Oscar nomination) for star James Franco’s tour de force performance (in addition to nabbing noms for Best Picture, adapted screenplay, original score, editing and original song). The realism and intensity — not to mention the gore — in one particularly brutal scene led to patrons fainting, which may have kept some viewers away, as the film grossed only $15 million.
“Burlesque” (Screen Gems, PG-13) — This pairing of songstresses Cher and Christina Aguilera could have been camp nirvana, but despite the story similarities (small-town girl goes to the big city to become a star and learns life lessons the hard way), this derided musical didn’t cross the line from bad to entertaining often enough the way “Showgirls” did. Critics found the story timeworn,...

"There really was no turning back," Richard Levine tells Back Stage when asked about his transition from stage acting to writing in the late 1980s. When his old friend and now writing partner Lynn Green made the same transition, the two joined forces, and Levine has not looked back. And why should he? His first steps in writing took him on a path that included television, plays, and a regular gig writing for the hit series "Nip/Tuck." He went on to direct episodes of the series, and is now on the verge of an even more exciting project: the release of his new film, "Every Day.""Every Day," opening in limited release on Jan. 14, tells the story of a family facing turbulent times and staying together despite them. The action centers on the father, Ned, played by Liev Schreiber, who is miserably disillusioned at work, processing the surprising revelation...

Every Day
Directed by: Richard Levine
Starring: Liev Schrieber, Helen Hunt, Carcla Gugino
Rating: R
Release Date: January 14, 2011 (limited)
Trailer Score: 4/10
My Thoughts: Ya know those mediocre movies that rely on the fact that they’ve got an all-star cast? Every Day could learn a thing or two from them, because telling me the plot just isn’t cutting it. Honestly, the trailer flits from over-exaggerated and cliched life problem to life problem with little emotional resonance.
Even now, having watched the trailer several times in preparation for the mediocrity that follows, I can’t quite piece together what made some of these people go for this project? I mean, Liev Schrieber has still got some box office dignity left, hasn’t he? I get these sort of straight-to-dvd antics from Helen Hunt because truth be told, I’m struggling to come up with something she was in other than...
