Matthew Houck of Phosphorescent has announced his new album Revelator, out April 5th and marking his debut for Verve Records. As a preview, he’s also shared the record’s title track.
Houck self-produced Revelator and recorded it in his own Nashville studio over the course of six months. It features collaborators including Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and Jim White of Dirty Three, as well as Houck’s partner, singer-songwriter/pianist Jo Schornikow. The album is billed as an exploration of “unspoken truths that come with the gravity of navigating home, partnership, and family,” contemplating the dark sides bubbling beneath one’s seemingly idyllic life.
Houck says that he considers “Revelator” to be perhaps the best song he’s ever written. “You’ve ridden beyond where you can safely touch down/ And you’re out in the void past where you could’ve had turned around,” he sings over an expectedly dreamy instrumental.

Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett has released a new single, “Born & Raised.” The rollicking track was recorded with producer Vance Powell and features Raconteurs bassist Jack Lawrence and Eagles of Death Metal drummer Julian Doro, along with keyboardist Mike Webb and steel guitarist Luke Schneider.
The reflective song sees Shiflett referencing his West Coast home with a country soul as he sings, “You might change but I’m-a stay the same/ Where I was born and raised.”

“Ya ever feel like we’ve been had?” Chris Shiflett sings in his new song “Long, Long Year,” an opening lyric that calls to mind Johnny Rotten’s famous query: “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” But “Long, Long Year” delivers — the mid-tempo ballad is another satisfying slice of country-rock from Shiflett, the Foo Fighters guitarist and alt-country songwriter.

The Raconteurs explore a Wisconsin tourist attraction in their new video for “Somedays (I Don’t Feel Like Trying),” a track from their latest album Help Us Stranger.
Directed by Ben Chappell, the clip shows the supergroup — Jack White, Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler — filmed on location at the House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The 1950s modernist house features a unique layout design and many other oddities, including an indoor carousel, token-operated musical instruments and a 218-foot “Infinity Room” that juts out from the house with no supports underneath.

The Raconteurs took the stage at Jimmy Kimmel Live to offer up two of their new tracks, “Somedays (I Don’t Feel Like Trying)” and “Don’t Bother Me.” Both songs come from the rock band’s recent album Help Us Stranger, which dropped in June.
The musicians get particularly raucous on “Don’t Bother Me,” a guitar-driven garage rock number with a raw, energized vibe. “Somedays (I Don’t Feel Like Trying)” is more low-key, with Jack White taking a less impassioned approach to the vocals.

Musical Renaissance man Jack White has already had the honor of performing on “Saturday Night Live” but it wasn’t until last night that he performed his first full live solo set at the third birthday celebration for his self-owned label, Third Man Records (via Jam Canoe).
The multi-instrumentalist showcased 19 tracks spanning his career nicely, which included songs by The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather (never realized how much he likes “The” before his band names), as well as six new cuts off his forthcoming debut album Blunderbuss.
Keeping it low-key at his label’s headquarters in Nashville for the gig, White’s audience consisted of a couple hundred critics, music industry insiders, fellow bandmates and contest winners. In true White fashion, invites were found on cardboard volvelle wheels. The reception area for VIPs took place in the Third Man complex’s lounge, which...

The ultimate superhero would heal himself like Wolverine and have the gadgets and Batmobile of The Dark Knight, according to film fans.
Around a fifth (22 per cent) of people polled said their top superhero power was Wolverine's accelerated healing.
The character, played in the X-Men movies by Hugh Jackman, also has retractable claws that are part of an adamantium-laced skeleton.
He narrowly beat another of the X-Men to the top with 21 per cent voting for Professor X's telepathic powers, although Magneto's ability to control metal by generating magnetic fields was surprisingly absent.
Superman came third with 15 per cent of people voting for the power of flight.
The poll, carried out by movie rental and online streaming service Lovefilm to mark today's release of Captain America: The First Avenger, surveyed 3,000 people.
According to the poll results, 27 per cent said the perfect crimefighter should don the mask worn by Rorschach in Watchmen.

London (Reuters) - Of all the powers of all the superheroes in all the world, film fans think the most impressive is the quick healing ability of Wolverine, according to a poll.
Wolverine's power, which allows him to recover from almost any injury or disease, came top with 22 percent of the vote, followed by the telepathic powers of Professor X, another X-Men character, at 21 percent.
Superman's ability to fly was third while Spiderman fell from hero to zero in the poll, with only three percent of respondents believing web-spinning skills to be worthy of the ultimate superhero.
The survey, carried out by the European film rental service Lovefilm, questioned 3,000 members about special powers that would make the ultimate superhero.
"Having worked with comic books for most of my career and naturally being a huge fan of superhero films, a few of the results really surprised me," said comic artist Jack Lawrence.

White Lies worried they had forgotten how to write songs. The British group spend so long on the road touring their old material, they were concerned they would be unable to complete the follow-up to debut LP "To Lose My Life".

It's hard to believe that it's only been three years since we last heard from the White Stripes. But ever since the band went on indefinite hiatus following an abruptly canceled tour in support of 2007's Icky Thump, the big question has been, "Is this the end?"
While group leader Jack White has kept plenty busy, launching his side bands the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather, opening a studio/recording complex in Nashville, jamming with Conan O'Brien on his new show, and cutting that James Bond song with Alicia Keys, his cohort and ex-wife, drummer Meg White, has kept a very low profile since the Stripes pulled the plug on the Thump tour as a result of her acute anxiety attack.

Rock auteurs go for the jugular Alison Mosshart, Jack White, Dean Fertita and Jack Lawrence—of the Kills, the White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age, and the Raconteurs, respectively—have something in common beyond a love of vintage rock and pluralized band names: They all approach music with equal measures of recklessness and craft. Their sophomore album (following up last year’s Horehound) cranks the mojo up to 11, splitting time between inferno-grade blues-rock and grooves so swampy they practically emit wavy stink lines. Guitars go terse, then molten, while Fertita bends space with his tough, spacey organ vamps; White sings lead...

No matter what sort of musician you are or what kind of band you're in, your musical personality tends to match up with one of the Beatles. Are you the strong-headed leader type? You're probably John. Do you prefer the sweeter side of music, and of life? You're likely a Paul. Is spiritualism more your thing? It's George for you. Are you the underrated goofball? Hello, Ringo. Whenever there's a quartet with distinct personalities, it always ends up that way. In Kiss, Paul is John, Gene is Paul, Ace is George and Peter is Ringo (note that the instrumentation lines up there exactly). In Mötly Crüe, Nikki Sixx is the Paul, Mick Mars is the George and Tommy Lee is Ringo. (Are there any drummers who aren't Ringo? Towards the end when Nirvana was a quartet, Pat Smear was sort of brought in to be the Ringo, with Kurt as the John,...

"Paul is my favorite Beatle," the guitarist told MTV News backstage at the Outside Lands Festival. "He's been a big influence on me — especially the way that he sings."
White cited an early track as the...

The Dead Weather — the garage-blues supergroup consisting of Jack White, the Kills' Alison Mosshart, the Raconteurs' Jack Lawrence and Queens of the Stone Age's Dean Fertita — famously put together their debut album Horehound in only two weeks, which is an impressive feat by any standard. And according to White, the initial surge of creative energy hasn't ebbed in the slightest, so much so that the band already has enough new songs to make a second album, which they intend to do this fall.
"We're really amped up to record the next record," White told MTV News backstage at the Outside Lands Festival. "We've got a lot of songs cooking right now — 12, 13, 14, 15 ... I don't know how many. We've gone in and recorded...

There's a chill in the air in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, which suits Jack White just fine. His latest band, the Dead Weather (a collaboration with members of the Kills, Queens of the Stone Age and the Greenhornes) took the stage in the middle of the afternoon on the final day of the 2009 Outside Lands Festival, but not before sitting down with MTV News to talk about the dangers of festivals, writing on the road and what makes the Dead Weather "evil."
"I had heard that it was going to be 100 degrees here today, so I'm really glad it's a little chilly," White told us. Singer Alison Mosshart's concerns were different. "I'm worried that it's the middle of the day and still light out. It's better in the dark."

We all know Spike Jonze for complicated films such as Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, and despite Warner Bros. previously being unhappy with his dark adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are (not quite the mass audience, family friendly film they were hoping for), it’s due for release on 11th December. The film of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s story looks set to be as intriguing as the book, and it seems the soundtrack will be just as exciting. Released under the artist name Karen O and the Kids, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman has collaborated with various indie rockers to create the soundtrack, due for release on 29th September.
It was rumored Karen was writing the soundtrack when she was dating Jonez a few years ago, and fans were worried about its fate after their split, when news of it died down. Karen admits she “got involved...

Yeah Yeah Yeahs vocalist Karen O's "Where the Wild Things Are" soundtrack are set to be released by Dgc/Interscope. The singer enlisted the help of the "Kids" to create songs for the live-action film adaptation of the Maurice Sendak children's novel.
Dubbed as Karen O and the Kids, the group - Karen together with Tristan Bechet, Tom Biller, Bradford Cox, Brian Chase, Dean Fertita, Aaron Hemphill, Greg Kurstin, Jack Lawrence, Oscar Michel, Imad Wasif, Nick Zinner and a children's choir - composed songs that capture the childlike essence of the film while staying true to the bittersweet theme.
She said, "I didn't want to make music that was hammering you over the head or go for some kind of pushbutton emotion. What I initially wanted to do was close to Cat Stevens in Harold & Maude, really simple, but memorably and seamlessly woven into the movie."

Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs has enlisted quite a few talented "kids" to help round out the soundtrack to Spike Jonze's forthcoming "Where the Wild Things Are" film adaptation of the children's book. Under the moniker Karen O and the Kids, she collaborated with Yyy cohorts Brian Chase and Nick Zinner, The Raconteurs/The Dead Weather bandmates Dan Fertita (Queens of the Stoneage) and Jack Lawrence (The Greenhornes), Deerhunter and Atlas Sound frontman Bradford Cox, psych-rock songwriter Imaad Wasif, Liars' Aaron Hemphill and more. Oh, and there's an untrained kids choir thrown in for good measure. The movie, which is...

It's been more than a decade since Brendan Benson debuted with his first solo release, 1996's One Mississippi. The Michigan-born, Nashville-based musician jumped from record label to record label as a solo artist before forming the Grammy Award-winning Raconteurs with buddies Jack White, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler. Now Benson is returning to the solo game, offering his brand of power-pop, reminiscent of the crafty arrangement of classic rock 'n' roll.
Paste caught up with Benson in his hometown of Nashville after returning from his holiday overseas, which included stops in Berlin and London to promote his fourth solo record, My Old, Familiar Friend, which hits stores Aug. 18. Preparing to kick off a North American tour, which includes an appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman on Aug. 21, Benson talked about recording in Nashville and London, how his approach to playing live has changed and what he's learned playing with The Raconteurs.

Even before The White Stripes broke wide, the alt-rock scene harbored a goodly number of loud, minimalist electric-blues acts steeped in echo, bash, and gothic misery. Jack White injected a necessary dose of wit and personality into the genre, laced with an understanding that while a bluesy sound is easy to replicate, a credible swagger takes a leap of imagination. White’s new supergroup, The Dead Weather—featuring The Kills’ Alison Mosshart on vocals, The Greenhornes’/Raconteurs’ Jack Lawrence on bass, Queens Of The Stone Age’s Dean Fertita on guitar, and White on drums—brings that swagger more than ...

Jack White has denied the suggestion that the sound of his new supergroup The Dead Weather is contrived to be successful. The White Stripes frontman, who drums in the new band, told The Guardian that the style of music he plays with Alison Mosshart, Dean Ferita and Jack Lawrence arose naturally. White said: "The way I like to start a new project is to take a cover song and make a stab at it, ideally one that has nothing to do with the people in the room. Jack White punched one of his female bandmates during an alcohol-fuelled night out. The Dead Weather rocker hit Alison Mosshart - who is a member of the group and also in The Kills alongside Kate Moss' boyfriend Jamie Hince - after getting into an argument with her in a New York bar.
The pair - who formed Dead Weather with Jack's Raconteurs bandmate Jack Lawrence and Queens of the Stone Age star Dean Fertita - are both said to be "ashamed" about the altercation and have now resolved their differences.
A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Jack and Alison went on a mammoth all-day session when they met up in New York. They sunk a lot of alcohol and ended up at each others' throats. It was a one-off scrap and they both feel really ashamed.
