For her directorial debut, Anna Kendrick chose a particularly daunting task in tackling the story of the notorious serial killer Rodney Alcala, who staged a terrifying murder spree in the ’70s in which he is thought to have killed upwards of 130 people. The center of Kendrick’s movie, Woman of the Hour, focuses on his appearance in plain sight on a 1978 episode of ABC’s The Dating Game, in which he was the bachelor that contestant Cheryl Bradshaw wound up choosing to go on a date with, not knowing that this was a period in the middle of his murderous spree.
ABC’s 20/20 devoted a full hour in May 2021 to the story of the cold-blooded killer who died in incarceration, but Kendrick’s film version has more on its mind that just the facts. It had its world premiere Friday as a Special Presentation at the Toronto Film Festival.

Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour,” is one of the trickiest balancing acts at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. You could call the film, which premiered Friday at the Princess of Wales Theatre, a black comedy — but that term usually suggests a seriocomic tone running through the film.
“Woman of the Hour,” by contrast, is humorous sometimes and not funny at all at others. It can be amusing when portraying kitschy ’70s pop culture shot through with casual sexism, but it is simply horrifying when sexism turns to rape and murder.
It’s the kind of tonal schizophrenia that would be a challenge for an experienced director to pull off, but first-timer Kendrick manages to make her film both weirdly entertaining and thoroughly disturbing.
The premise itself is completely bizarre, not least because it’s true. In 1978, serial killer Rodney Alcala was a contestant on “The Dating Game,...

On the original version of The Dating Game, nobody ever expected — or wanted, for that matter — to hear host Jim Lange singing on the show. The new ABC reboot, The Celebrity Dating Game, has a couple of hosts, though, who are double-threats: Both Michael Bolton and Zooey Deschanel have had lengthy music careers […]

Rodney Alcala, the serial killer known as “The Dating Game Killer” after he appeared on the popular game show in 1978 amid his killing spree, has died at the age of 77.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced that Alcala died early Saturday morning at a hospital near Corcoran, California; at the time of his death, Alcala was awaiting execution following his conviction in the 1979 murder of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe.
“That judgment was reversed in 1984 by the California Supreme Court and Alcala was granted a new trial,” the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation added.

Rodney James Alcala, the so-called “Dating Game Killer” who was on California’s death row from Orange County, died of natural causes at 1:43 a.m. on July 24, 2021 at a hospital in the community.
In 1968, Alcala was a contestant on the game show The Dating Game. Host Jim Lange introduced him as a “successful photographer who got his start when his father found him in the darkroom at the age of 13, fully developed. Between takes you might find him skydiving or motorcycling.”
He won the competition, but his “date” refused to go out with him because she found him “creepy.”

In 1986, he was sentenced to death a second time for the Samsoe murder.

ABC revived The Dating Game this Monday night, but with a celebrity twist. Is the tweaked redo worthy of a big dating game kiss?
As I did with the new incarnations of Card Sharks, Name That Tune and surely others, I as a man of a certain age am here to compare The Celebrity Dating Game to its original incarnation, which most famously (in my opinion) was hosted in the ’70s by Jim Lange. ABC is reviving “The Dating Game” with a new celebrity twist and Zooey Deschanel and Michael Bolton at the helm, the network announced Thursday.
“The Celebrity Dating Game” has been picked up for eight one-hour episodes at the network, and is described as a “wry wink at modern dating with a star-studded roster of celebrity singles in their pursuit to find love.”
The new show will flip the format of the original 1960s series hosted by Jim Lange. Rather than having one contestant question three hidden suitors, the three suitors will be visible to the audience throughout the episode, and the identity of the celebrity they are attempting to woo will remain concealed until the end of the hour. Per ABC, “suitors will have the opportunity to guess the secret identity based on clues, questions and special parody performances by host Michael Bolton.”
“The Celebrity Dating Game” is produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Name That Tune is returning to screens with Jane Krakowski hosting a rebooted series for Fox.
Former American Idol judge Randy Jackson is set as band leader for the show, which will premiere on January 6 after The Masked Singer. It joins Beat Shazam, the Name That Tune-esque competition hosted by Jamie Foxx that was renewed for a fourth season, on Fox’s unscripted schedule.

Adding to the growing list of 2014 celebrity deaths, Jim Lange died of a heart attack at the age of 81 in his Mill Valley, California home on Tuesday (February 25).
As the original host of “The Dating Game” back in the 1960s and 1970s, Lange had the opportunity to rub shoulders with celebrities like Farrah Fawcett, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Martin and Michael Jackson.
Lange’s wife Nancy told press, "As much as he's known for his television work, his real love was radio. He loved doing local radio, especially before it was computerized."
To that end, Jim had once noted, "[With radio] you don't have to worry about lighting directors and cameramen or script writers and all that. Good radio is still the most fun. It always will be. Plus, you don't have to wear makeup and you don't have to shave."

Jim Lange, the first host of the iconic 1960s and ’70s game show The Dating Game, died Tuesday of a heart attack in his Mill Valley, CA home. He was 81. Lange hosted the game show for more than a decade after it debuted in 1965, and over those years played host to contestants including Michael Jackson, Steve Martin, Farrah Fawcett and Arnold Schwarzenegger competing for the right to win a date by answering questions that were intended to illicit PG-13 responses well before there was such a thing as PG-13. Lange, a St Paul, Mn native, would go on to host other game shows like Hollywood Connection, $100,000 Name That Tune and The New Newlywed Game. He also had a long career in radio in La and San Francisco, and was an DJ in the Bay Area before he retired in 2005.

Long before roses were being handed out on "The Bachelorette," ABC brought us "The Dating Game," where a cute bachelor or bachelorette would interview three eligible suitors without being able to see them and then pick one to go on a date.
Jim Lange was the original host of the show, appearing from 1965 to 1980. He passed away this week at the age of 81 after suffering a heart attack, his wife Nancy tells the Associated Press. In honor of Mr. Lange, here are some of the famous faces who appeared on "The Dating Game."
Some were on because they were famous, like a young Sally Field, who was starring on "Gidget" in 1966. But the funniest ones are the pre-fame celebrities, like Farrah Fawcett, Bob Saget, John Ritter and Phil Hartman. Enjoy!

Jim Nabors is a TV icon thanks to his role as Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., but he just renewed his legend in a cool and heartwarming way -- by marrying his male partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader. Nabors has long resided in Hawaii, but he and Cadwallader tied the knot in Seattle. Said Nabors, "“I’m 82 and he’s in his 60s and so we’ve been together for 38 years and I’m not ashamed of people knowing, it’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody,” Nabors said. “I’m very happy that I’ve had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I’m just very happy.”
And so am I. So much so that I'm posing a very difficult, Nabors-themed question: What's the best Gomer Pyle U.

With new summer programming like what's on display tonight, it's enough to make you miss reruns. (Well, hello, CBS! We can always count on you to do things the traditional way — at least until Big Brother returns next month.)
You could do worse than re-watching Leonard's date with Penny on The Big Bang Theory, or Person of Interest's Reese protecting Astro from last season's The X Factor or Cho's first meeting with Samaire Armstrong on The Mentalist. You could do far worse.
You could, for example, watch your brain cells atrophy by tuning into Fox's hardly-fit-for-cable combo of goofy new meat-market dating shows. (The Dating Game's Jim Lange, I miss you.) In Take Me Out (8/7c), which might as well be called Date Or No Date, it's the guy on display, trying to charm a "flirty 30" bevy of bimbos before they turn out the light on their podium,...

Want to know Bachelor Number One's idea of the perfect date? Think you've got your new spouse all figured out? Those are the burning questions the Game Show Network (Gsn) aims to answer with its modernized revival of two game show classics; The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game.
Starting in 1966 on ABC, The Newlywed Game has enjoyed multiple runs that have spanned the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. Most incarnations were hosted by Bob Eubanks whose dry, quick humor proved a perfect foil for flustered contestants trying to guess how their spouses had answered purposely suggestive questions.
The Dating Game launched in 1965 on ABC and enjoyed several runs through the 60's, 70's and 80's as well. Dating Game was presented by a number of hosts over the years, most notably Jim Lange. Like Dating Game, slyly worded questions were used to produce hilarious responses as contestants interviewed potential suitors.

GSN has tapped Kim Coles and stand-up comedian Judy Gold to host the pilots for The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game, respectively.
The cable network is prepping new versions of the popular 1970s game shows, which are Sony-owned titles, that will incorporate modern elements like online dating sites. Michael Davies is executive producing both shows through his overall deal at Sony Pictures TV.
As for the hosts, GSN senior vp programming Jamie Roberts said this month that the network was looking for "unusual candidates to take these shows and reinvent them."
Newlywed often is identified with Bob Eubanks, who hosted most of the show's incarnations, though Jim Lange, Paul Rodriguez and Gary Kroeger were featured in some editions. Dating has been hosted by Lange, Elaine Joyce, Jeff MacGregor, Brad Sherwood and Chuck Woolery.
Coles is repped by Abrams Artists Agency.
Gold is repped by Rain Management Group.
