I’m Still Here is the much-talked about method-inspired documentary film from Academy Award nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck. Documenting a year in the life of Joaquin Phoenix proved to be a huge media-whoring event, as it kept media circuits, critics and fans alike guessing as to the authenticity of this project. Was it an elaborate hoax? A publicity stunt? Was any of it real? Had Phoenix fallen from grace? Is it possible that friend and brother-in-law Affleck, really stood back and done nothing but document the “mental breakdown” of Actor-turned-Rapper Phoenix? So many questions, all pre-occupied as to whether or not we were we all being duped into believing Phoenix had really gone off the rails and turned his back on Hollywood, in favour of pursuing a disillusioned recording career with “Notorious” Rap mogul Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs.

This is the Pure Movies review of I'm Still Here, written by Pure Movies editor Dan Higgins. The film is directed by Casey Affleck and following Joaquin Phoenix, the Oscar-nominated star of Gladiator, Walk The Line, Two Lovers and Hotel Rwanda. The film also stars Sean Combs, Antony Langdon, Ben Stiller, Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn, Mos Def and Danny DeVito - whether all of them are acting or not is up to you. “Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight”. As David Letterman spoke those words, the world contemplated whether Phoenix had tragically fallen from grace or whether, more optimistically, he had been watching the highlights of Andy Kaufman’s back catalogue. Invariably, then, going into this film, the biggest question remains the same. Is this an elaborate practical joke for his own amusement, or the actual direction Phoenix would like his career, and life, to take?...

Well this is... odd. Less than a week after Casey Affleck's Joaquin Phoenix documentary I'm Still Here hit select theatres, he has decided to let the world in on a little secret. Guess what? It was all fake! Yep, Joaquin Phoenix wasn't really going crazy, it was all just an act. We got totally punk'd. Now I think most of us had figured out the truth a long time ago, but it seems that a lot of critics weren't in on the joke -- leading them to deliver some pretty negative reviews. In an effort to temper the reactions, Affleck has decided to make a public statement praising Phoenix's performance. Man, Roger Ebert is gonna be pissed. Casey Affleck had this to say: "It's a terrific performance, it's the performance of his career... I never intended to trick anybody. The idea of a quote, hoax, unquote, never entered my mind.

I'm Still Here Directed by: Casey Affleck Written by: Casey Affleck & Joaquin Phoenix Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Sean Combs, Antony Langdon, Ben Stiller The joke’s on me. Here I thought that after two years of Joaquin Phoenix’s strange behavior, Casey Affleck’s mockumentary I’m Still Here, would lift the veil on one of the most elaborate meta performances of all time. Instead, this ineptly assembled alter to egotism harps incessantly on a point it never makes about the nature of fame. Whether Phoenix’s performance is manufactured or not (though I believe it is) is beside the point. If we take it at face value, then his actions are deplorable; he treats the people around him like shit, while neurotically painting himself the wounded victim. He’s fixated on the conspiratorial judgment of the oppressive world, and whines that preconception clouds his audience’s ability to appreciate his ludicrous venture into hip-hop.

Congratulations, we've all been had. Though there were brief gaps in the logic of Joaquin Phoenix's much ballyhooed "retirement" from acting -- right after he had been twice nominated for Academy Awards -- to start a career as a hip-hop artist, for the most part, it simply seemed like Phoenix had a break from reality and chose to act that out spitting phat beats into a microphone. His brother-in-law Casey Affleck follows Phoenix around, recording his meltdown from behind the scenes and his attempts to break in to the music industry. And by god, it is the bread and circus he promised in Gladiator. It's one part rockumentary, one part mockumentary, and one part shockumentary -- and it adds up to a fascinating study in the 24/7 cult of celebrity that plagues our culture. And it's all bullshit. I debated whether or not to be like my peers and pull...

The long-awaited documentary following Joaquin Phoenix and his decision to quit acting to become a hip hop artist arrives. But is I'm Still Here actually any good?
I'm Still Here is either the culmination of a bold artistic project or the chronicle of a man losing his connection to reality. Ever since Oscar nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix announced his retirement from the silver screen in 2008, showbiz columns have been awash with shock, speculation and derision.
Conspiracy theorists gained credence when it was revealed that the Walk The Line star intended to embark on a new career as a hip hop artist. Before long, grainy cell phone footage of Joaquin's laughable attempts at live Mc performance became a viral sensation and the cries of "hoax!" rang out louder and louder.
His brother-in-law, Casey Affleck (The Assassination Of Jesse James; Gone, Baby, Gone) was on hand to chronicle the entire escapade. Fictitious or not,...

It might seem pretty cut and dry, but from the rumors behind I'm Still Here, I really have no clue what to expect. For example, I knew the movie would contain man on man defecation. However, yesterday I read that the man defecating on Joaquin Phoenix was the guitarist for Spacehog (Antony Langdon). How odd and random is that? Then again, how odd and random is this whole thing? Now there's this new clip from the film where Phoenix goes to the home of Diddy or whatever the f*ck he's...
