J.R. Ewing was a business cheat, faithless husband and bottomless well of corruption. Yet with his sparkling grin, Larry Hagman masterfully created the charmingly loathsome oil baron — and coaxed forth a Texas-size gusher of ratings — on television's long-running and hugely successful nighttime soap, "Dallas."Although he first gained fame as nice guy Major Tony Nelson on the fluffy 1965-70 NBC comedy "I Dream of Jeannie," Hagman earned his greatest stardom with J.R. The CBS serial drama about the Ewing family and those in their orbit aired from April 1978 to May 1991, and broke viewing records with its "Who shot J.R.?" 1980 cliffhanger that left unclear if Hagman's character was dead. The actor, who returned as J.R. in a new edition of "Dallas" this year, had a long history of health problems and died Friday due to complications from his battle with cancer, his family said."Larry was back...

Larry Hagman, who played J.R. the conniving, villainous head of the Ewing clan on the TV series Dallas, died today at a Dallas hospital, sources close to the actor told the Dallas Morning News. He was 81. Born in Fort Worth, Hagman was the son of legendary actress Mary Martin. He played the character in the long-running primetime soap from 1978 through 1991 on CBS. He returned last year when the series was resurrected on TNT, focusing on a new generation of Ewings. Prior to Dallas, Hagman’s biggest TV role had been as the astronaut Major Anthony Nelson on NBC’s I Dream Of Jeannie opposite Barbara Eden. Among those confirming the death were co-star Linda Gray’s agent, Jeffrey Lane, who said the actress was at Hagman’s bedside when he died. Lane said another co-star, Patrick Duffy, was also present. Hagman appeared in Season 1 of the Dallas reboot and...

Each year as August fades, I look forward to cooler weather and the start of the fall theater season. This year there was no big summer opening, so all the excitement is to come. Out of the upcoming musicals, the one I am most looking forward to is Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. I feel I am not alone on this front. Despite the fact that I viewed the prior David Yazbek/Jeffrey Lane collaboration, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, to be a misfire, I have high hopes that they'll score here. I think Yazbek is a talent who should have won a Tony for his Full Monty score. It features a cast of theater luminaries and Justin Guarini. (Guarini, known for American Idol and J2K, was supposed to make his Broadway debut years ago in Good Vibrations but...

Maine State Music Theatre's third show of the 2009 season is the delightfully deceptive "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." This Tony Award winning musical is based on the film of the same name and includes music and lyrics by David Yazbek, composer and lyricist of "The Full Monty", and a book by Jeffrey Lane. In addition to the familiar story line, the musical boasts witty lyrics with a side of harmless adult humor.
