Set in San Francisco on the eve of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Dogfight is pitched on the precipice of a massive sea change in American life. The post-war boom of the 1950s is waning, and the civil rights era and the Vietnam War are right around the corner. The film’s protagonists exist, then, in a kind of liminal space, uncomfortable in their own skin and riddled with anxieties and uncertainties about their immediate futures.
Released in 1991, when nostalgia for the ’60s was near its peak, Nancy Savoca’s film takes a distinctly feminine perspective on the era, challenging the unbridled machismo and ritualistic behaviors that were often celebrated, or at least unexamined, in the male-directed films of the time. [Note: With the film due for a UK release this week, here’s a reposting of my review of Bernard Rose’s Frankenstein from last summer’s London Frightfest]
Helmed by Bernard Rose, still best known for Candyman, this new take on Frankenstein explores the classic tale from the perspective of the monster rather than the scientist – recapturing what was so great about Mary Shelley’s original story, taking the themes she wrote about and giving them a very modern spin. So modern in fact that I’m positive it’s the first, and only time, we’ve been presented with a 3D-printed protagonist! It may sound crazy but the idea, given recent advances in the technology (only last week it was announced that fully working prosthetics for amputee’s can be 3D printed) is not that far-fetched.
You see, unlike previous iterations of the story, this Frankenstein’s monster, named ironcally Adam,...

Red State Trailer, Red State Poster. Kevin Smith‘s Red State (2011) movie trailer, movie poster stars Melissa Leo, Michael Parks, John Goodman, Michael Angarano, and Nicholas Braun. Red State‘s plot synopsis: “Red State begins by following three horny high school boys who come across an online ad from an older woman looking for a gang bang. Boys being boys, they hit the road to satisfy their libidinal urges. But what begins as a fantasy takes a dark turn as they come face-to-face with a terrifying “holy” force with a fatal agenda.”
We previously posted the Red State (2011) Teaser Trailer.
This reminds me of Eli Roth‘s Cabin Fever, a horror film that went back to the basics and didn’t rely on formula, whether successful in that endeavor or not.
Red State also stars Ronnie Connell, Kaylee DeFer, Kyle Gallner, Anna Gunn, Matt L. Jones, John Lacy, Catherine McCord,...
