Dumped to VOD with little to no fanfare by its distributors, Eagle and the Albatross is one of those direct to market films I would unreservedly call a hidden gem. One whose trailer, thankfully (given thats the Only marketing I’ve seen for the film) had me sold straight away!
The film debut of K-pop star Amber Liu, Eagle and the Albatross tells the story of orphaned halfKorean girl, Ji-min, who finds herself in small town America with her only living relative. A fish out of water, Ji-min seeks out a mentor to help with the only thing she loves – golf. The best player in town, the widowed optometrist, takes her under his wing,...

The Reading, Writing, It’s Exciting! Program (Rwe) is hosting a reading and literacy event at the Westside Pavilion Barnes & Noble (10850 West Pico Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90064) on June 4th & 7th to promote literacy and to shine a spotlight on how important it is for parents to read with their children.
To help ensure this message is heard, the organization has invited various celebrities to read a book (Dr. Seuss or other) for twenty minutes with one of the children at the event (or to their own children). Rwe hopes the celebrity participation will help inspire other parents to undertake this all-so-important activity with their own children. Literacy experts have all stated that if parents read to, and with, their children from a young age, it would solve many of our literacy problems.
Celebrities confirmed include Scott L. Schwartz (Ocean’s 11, 13, 13, The Scorpion King), Sean Kanan (The Young & The Restless,...

Beginning our series of interviews from this year's Tribeca Film Festival , ComingSoon.net sat down with director Amir Naderi and actress Nancy La Scala, director and star of one of the film's generating a bit of buzz, Vegas: Based on a True Story . Set in the desert area surrounding Las Vegas, it's a drama about a family trying to hold things together financially despite the temptation of the nearby casinos. When they learn there might be a briefcase containing a million dollars buried on their property, it begins to tear the family apart as they start digging up their beautiful landscaped yard in search of it. Naderi is an Iranian filmmaker who has been living and working in the United States for over 20 years, most notably with a trio of New York movies that includes...

Right at the turn of the Millenium, the director Amir Naderi came to me buzzing with a story he'd heard on a photo shoot outside Las Vegas. A family had been led to believe their home harbored some hidden loot. Searching for it, they slowly destroyed their own home and with it their family. We got to work developing the idea for a film, having no clue that, 9 years later, it would end up oddly prophetic. Vegas: Based On A True Story, currently in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival, tells the story of a blue-collar family on the outskirts of Vegas, holding its fragile life together by a thread, staving off the temptations of The Strip. While Tracy Parker (Nancy La Scala) tends a small garden in the desert, the casino skyline of the city winks insistently...

The Tribeca Film Festival has officially begun! Last night I had the pleasure of chatting with some stars on the red carpet for the festival’s opening film “Whatever Works.”
Evan Rachel Wood kicks things off telling me about the overwhelming, but exciting experience of working on a Woody Allen film. Nancy La Scala stopped by to tell me about her film “Vegas: Based on a True Story,” which is being shown this week. Debra Messing, who is a juror for the Narrative Shorts category, makes an appearance at the event. “Whatever Works” cast members, Larry David and Patricia Clarkson, give brief overviews of their characters and then, Woody himself, talks about how great it is to be back in New York.
Things start to wind down when NBC’s own Brian Williams makes his way down the carpet and tells me about how unusual it is for him to...
