In a category that is mostly dominated by Hollywood productions, particularly since epic films demand a rather significant budget, it is also interesting to highlight that Asia has also had its share of epics, most of which are of significant quality, even considered masterpieces. Samurais, historic events, wuxia, fantasy are all elements included in the movies of the list, which, once more, aims at diversity.
Most of these films are co-productions from companies from many countries. “Mongol” for example is a co-production between Russia, Germany, Kazakhstan and China. Instead of filling the titles with countries, we chose to just mention the country that the main story is based. Thus, in the case of “Mongol”, Mongolia is mentioned as the country of origin.
Without further ado, here are 20 excellent Asian epic movies, in alphabetic order

The Fantasia Film Festival is taking place from July 18th to August 6th in Montreal and will feature over 100 films from around the world. Horror Is Child’S Play – Don Mancini’S Curse Of Chucky (World Premiere)
A rarity among genre franchises, the Child’S Play series (begun in 1988) has retained the sure-handed guidance of original screenwriter/creator Don Mancini throughout killer doll Chucky’s decades’-long reign of horror. Mancini, who will be hosting our “scar-studded” world premiere, graduated to the director’s chair with 2004’s Seed Of Chucky, after having co-written or written every entry in the series. His longevity with the project is, of course, matched by the fiendish voiceover work by...

For newcomers to Kentaro Miura’s Beserk, The Golden Age Arc I – The Egg of the King will be a delightfully gory anime adventure. The first installment of the three-part series mixes middle-age architecture with fantastical elements drawn from Greek mythology. It’s one of the more serious anime on the market that doesn’t waste time with silly jokes and puns. There are even a couple epic siege scenes that appear to be inspired by Lord of the Rings – and one scene that reminded me of the siege on Kings Landing in Game of Thrones.
From the moment you begin watching it, you’ll relish in the brutal actions of Guts, a mercenary who feels more like a samurai gone rōnin. Even when the Arc I slams to a close, without any definitive ending, you’ll still be anxious to see part 2. Unfortunately, if you’re a fan of...

The Yahoo! Movies Japan website began streaming the full 112-second trailer for Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III – Descent (Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen III: Kōrin), the third part in Studio 4°C’s and Toshiyuki Kubooka film adaptations of Kentarou Miura‘s dark fantasy Berserk manga, on Friday.
A new poster and a trailer for the film was also unveiled on Friday with the tagline, “All darkness… eclipses light.” Have a look!
The film is scheduled to run for about 107 minutes and so far carry an R18+ rating given by Japan’s Film Classification and Rating Committee (Eirin) for “extremely provocative sexual content” on October 16th. But, the new movie poster and trailer list a R15+ rating.
The Gigazine website reports there are now plans to resubmit the film to Eirin for the R15+ rating, but if it stays designated as R18+, theaters will be required to restrict the film to viewers 18 years old or older.

Singer Kaname Kawabata of the duo Chemistry (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Gundam Seed Destiny & Unicorn, Antique Bakery) will contribute the ending theme song of the third Berserk feature film based on Kentaro Miura‘s manga, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III – Descent (Berserk Ōgon Jidai-Hen III: Kōrin).
The song “Breakthrough” is Kawabata’s second single after his solo debut last month. He had already been working on the song before his solo debut, but he remade and rearranged it to fit the majestic scale of the film with the help of the film trilogy’s composer Shiro Sagisu (whom you might remember as the master behind some of the best Bleach scores).
Kawabata revealed that he has been a huge fan of the original manga and the television anime series since he was a teenager, so he is excited to take part in a Berserk project.
