Half a century ago, Universal Pictures hoped to carry over the success of its entries in the short-lived disaster film vogue to naval combat movies, stirring some box office if few other rewards via dullish “Midway” and “Gray Lady Down,” which felt like bloated retro B-movies. Having revived the disaster genre with trilogy “The Wave,” “The Quake” and “The Burning Sea,” their Norwegian producers seem to be going the same route with “The Arctic Convoy,” about the perilous voyage of a freighter delivering supplies to Allies on the eastern front during World War 2.
The fact-inspired story’s central situation is compelling enough. But director/co-writer Henrik M. Dahlsbakken (of recent biopic “Munch”) delivers a middling effort too sparing of excitement to satisfy action fans, and without the character depth or involvement to score as drama instead. Released on the film’s home turf at Christmas, the competent but uninspired Scandinavian...

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer (below) for “Power Play,” which world premieres in the main competition section at next month’s series festival Canneseries. The fiction series is a raucous satire inspired by the real-life goings on behind the scenes when politician Gro Harlem Brundtland came to power in Norway in 1981. The power struggles and backroom bickering in the show bring to mind “Veep” and “In the Loop.”
Brundtland was the first female prime minister of any Nordic country, not just Norway, and one of Scandinavia’s leading figures in the fight for women’s rights, gender equality and abortion rights, with a standing on a par with Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Gloria Steinem in the U.S., or Simone Veil in France.

“Munch” is produced by The Film Company. The deal was negotiated between Vondah Elizabeth Sheldon on behalf of Juno Films and Vimish Gandesha, VP Viaplay select & content distribution. The feature is expected to premiere in New York, late spring 2023, with a nationwide run to follow.

Norwegian disaster movies The Wave and The Quake marked out an interesting middle ground in the genre. They eschewed the tiny, insular, approach of something like Right At Your Door, but didn’t quite have the budget to compete with the vast scale of the likes of Roland Emmerich’s CGI choked productions, but they turned their limitations very much to their advantage. Where Emmerich and others in Hollywood tend to favour spectacle over emotion, these films leaned in to character, and deployed their limited but high quality effects to make us feel the peril and therefore identify with the well drawn characters.
The Burning Sea, to my slight disappointment, doesn’t follow Kristoffer Joner’s character into yet another disaster, as if he were John McClane but it was nature, rather than terrorists, repeatedly trying to kill him. Instead, the film focuses on Sofia (Kristine Kujath Thorp), a robot...

"Drive for love, Roy! Drive for love!" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an action comedy film from Norway titled Asphalt Burning, which is the new English release title. This is actually the third movie in an action comedy, high octane car racing franchise from Norway called Børning - the first one (Borning: The Fast & The Funniest) opened in 2014, followed by Børning 2 in 2016. When the brakes slam on his wedding, Roy (the main character from all the Børning films - played by Anders Baasmo Christiansen) accepts a challenge from a new foe to race for his own runaway bride at the iconic Nürburgring track in Germany. "Børning 3 is mainly set in Germany, still focusing on car racing – high speed, fierce competition, with an exciting confrontation at the famous race track." Also starring Kathrine Thorborg Johansen, Ida Husøy, Otto Jespersen, Sven Nordin, and Trond Halbo. This looks like good-hearted racing fun.

With outposts in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo, Miso Film has become one of the most influential film and TV outfits in Scandinavia. On August 19, the company’s Norwegian arm lifted the curtain on its series venture, the supernatural police drama “Seizure” by premiering the show’s first two episodes at the Haugesund Film Festival ahead of its future broadcast on Nent Group’s Viaplay streaming platform.
Bowing as part of Haugesund’s Nordic TV Drama program, the show follows two Oslo detectives, played by popular local actors Anders Danielsen Lie and Anders Baasmo Christiansen (“Kon-Tiki”), as they investigare the deaths of four immigrant boys. Set against an intense backdrop of personal trauma, violent weather and otherworldly apparitions, the show mixes elements of traditional Scandi Noir with a more supernatural twist.
Variety spoke with show-writer Megan Gallagher, who had previously co-created the Nordic Noir “Borderliner,” a TV2 original that aired on Netflix internationally.

The boldness of Tuva Novotny to choose to make her directorial debut a one-shot film of harrowing emotion cannot be understated. Her Blind Spot takes us through the wringer as tragedy befalls a small, (seemingly) happy family without warning. These characters are distraught, confused, and falling to pieces as ambulances race and patience is tested before discovering new insights that may only provide more questions. And Novotny fearlessly traverses each new dramatic impulse, moving the camera from one to the other so we can be a fly on the wall for every revelation regardless of who onscreen is first to experience it. Love is on display in all its mysterious abstraction and unwavering power. But sometimes it’s not enough. Sometimes it clouds our vision from seeing devastating darkness.
Like love, this stylistic choice isn’t always enough either. For every unparalleled visual and sensory splendor a single-take experience conjures—we’re in the action,...

Catch up with the key news and projects from the Goteborg Film Festival and Nordic Film Market.A warm ‘Welcome’ ahead of Efm
One of the hottest premieres in Goteborg was Welcome To Norway!, the immigration-themed dramedy that was the first film to sell out and later won the Audience Award for best Nordic film. Its industry and press screenings were also packed, setting the film up well as it heads to Berlin’s Efm, where Beta Cinema handles sales.
Director Rune Langlo Denstad said he had the project in mind for more than ten years after he visited a centre for asylum seekers while working on documentary projects. A decade later, the film couldn’t be more topical.

Director: Pål Øie. Writers: Kjersti Helen Rasmussen and Pål Øie. Cast: Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Baard Owe, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen and Ellen Dorrit Petersen. Norway continues to develop a frightening horror scene. From the Fritt Vilt slasher series to Død snø (2009), this cold country has lots of scary tales to tell. The latest is titled Villmark 2. Shot twelve years after the first film, this time a crew of workers are tasked with identifying toxic materials in an ancient asylum. Very reminiscent of Session 9 (2001) and definitely an homage, Villmark 2 is very slow in its build up of tension. However, into the third act, events take a brutal turn as the film's World War II mythology comes to the forefront. Sound design and production values are high. But, Villmark 2 fails to find its own original story and direction, which makes a viewing of this film very predictable and slightly unexciting.

Norway continues to churn out quality horror films. From Cold Prey (2006) to Dead Snow (2009), Norway knows how to use its wild, snowy settings to create a chilling atmosphere. The latest to come from this Scandinavian country is titled Villmark 2, or Wilderness 2, or Dark Woods 2. This feature follows the original 2003 film and near the same setting. This time several contract workers must clear an ancient sanatorium, but something malicious lingers nearby. The film stars Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Baard Owe and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen. As well, the film has been directed by Pål Øie (Hidden). The first trailer for Villmark 2 is hosted here. From the longer synopsis, a sanatorium lies deep in an isolated forest. Here, a janitor manages the building, with five more contract workers set to remove hazardous material, including asbestos. Over a 100 rooms have to be cleaned. However, something or someone lays in wait within this ancient abode.

An Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, the old-school high-seas adventure epic that reintroduces the inspiring historical feat of Thor Heyerdahl from Norwegian directors Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg sails past every opportunity to chart the deeper waters of human emotion, but the worthwhile story and sophisticated visual effects keep Kon-Tiki afloat.
As history goes, Norwegian ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl was convinced, after ten years of field work, that Polynesia was populated from the East by South Americans, despite conventional wisdom that Asians settled the island (with which genetic findings from contemporary anthropologists agree). His theory was rejected by scientific publishers including National Geographic, but rather than accepting the death sentence of his dissertation, the explorer embarked on the 5,000 mile journey that he believed Peruvians made 1,500 years earlier. Using a faithfully constructed, self-built balsa wood raft named after Incan sun god Kon-Tiki, Heyerdahl proved that oceans were not barriers,...

Norway’s Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film Of The Year is finally sailing in on DVD and Blu-ray. From Anchor Bay Entertainment and The Weinstein Company, Kon-tiki is available to own now and will remind you of how Hollywood used to do movies. This is one you will want to add to your collection.
From the directing duo of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (Max Manus: Man of War, Bandidas), Kon-tiki is based on the amazing true adventure of Thor Heyderdahl (Pål Sverre Hagen), a Norwegian explorer in 1947 who embarks on the voyage of a lifetime to prove a point.
In 1947, the world is gripped with excitement as the young Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl (Pål Hagen) embarks on an astonishing expedition – a journey of 4,300 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean on the Kon-Tiki raft. From his days living in the Marquesas with his wife Liv (Agnes Kittlesen), Thor...

With the season of Summer blockbusters already in full swing here in the middle of May, you may have a tough time recalling the nominees for Best Foreign Language Film from the 85th Academy Awards ceremony way back in February. We here at the website have gotten to see the winner, Armour, and two other nominees, No and A Royal Affair (War Witch has yet to screen in our neck-of-the-woods). Now we finally get to see the entry from Norway, Kon-tiki. And it turns out that this is the perfect time for this film, for this isn’t a somber, human drama like Haneke’s intimate portrait, but a rollicking, edge-of-your-seat adventure. Yes, it is a true story set in the past like No and Affair, but after the heroes set out to sea, it feels as though their exploits could be happening right now. The story of the voyage...

Chicago – Mention the name Thor Heyerdahl or his sea-faring vessel “Kon-Tiki,” and half-remembered images of a voyage across the sea in a ship that looks like it was built on “Gilligan’s Isle” might cross memory neurons. Why, when and how he did it is brought to screen in the excellent and appropriately titled “Kon-Tiki.”

In the name and hope of man’s innate instinct to explore, “Kon-Tiki” serves as a lesson for visionaries, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the recent Oscars. Thor Heyerdahl simply had a higher calling to see what is “out there” and prove a point while doing it. The film meticulously and lovingly recreates the journey of that haphazard boat, and crispy reproduces the particular time frame in which it was done. All the sharks, odd sea life, storms, challenges and triumphs are explored, as well as a nicely wrought examination...

"Kon-Tiki" needed to be made for the simple reason that the world needs to remember that real scientific adventure existed long before George Lucas dreamed up Indiana Jones. The 60-some years that have passed since Thor Heyerdahl & Co. set out to prove a far-out theory of human migration by floating across the Pacific on a balsa wood raft, risking life, limb and reputation on that theory, have let us forget there were once men bold enough to gamble with their lives to prove a scientific point.
And the fact that DNA testing has almost entirely deflated Heyerdahl's big idea -- that the stone idols of South America look an awful lot like ones in the South Pacific, and that ancient Peruvians must have migrated west and settled Polynesia -- does nothing to diminish what he and five others attempted and then proved could be done.

Los Angeles -- The Norwegian directing team of Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg, whose biopic of World War II resistance fighter Max Manus was a huge hit on home turf, have turned to another native hero for "Kon-Tiki." One of the most-vaunted escapades of the 20th century, Thor Heyerdahl's 1947 Peru-to-Polynesia expedition by raft gets glossy big-screen treatment in this efficiently told action-adventure. Delivering visual drama and understated character study, sometimes in disappointingly formulaic fashion, the feature has its incisive moments but falls short as both epic and intimate portrait.
With effective immediacy, the directors dramatize some incidents from Heyerdahl's 1950 Oscar-winning documentary about the trip, and cinematographer Geir Hartly Andreassen pays tribute in re-created B&W footage of the building of the raft. Too much of the action, though, devolves into close encounters with sharks, scenes that leave the on-deck characters adrift rather than helping to define them.

Set for a limited release on April 19, Kon-Tiki is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg from a script by Petter Skavlan. Starring Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen, Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Gustaf Skarsgård, Jakob Oftebro, Odd Magnus Williamson, Tobias Santelmann and Agnes Kittelsen, the film is officially described as follows: In 1947, the world is gripped with excitement as the young Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl embarks on an astonishing expedition - a journey of 4,300 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean on the Kon-Tiki raft. From his days living in the Marquesas with his wife Liv, Thor suspected that the South Sea Islands had been settled...

A nominee for Best Foreign Language Picture at this year’s Oscars, Norwegian import Kon-Tiki chronicles the journey of adventurer Thor Heyerdahl and his incredible journey some 5,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia on a balsa wood raft. Though comparisons will inevitably be drawn between this film and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, a fellow Oscar nominee, they are very different beasts and are both films are deserving of attention.
If nothing else, Kon-Tiki (the name of the aforementioned vessel) adds to the impressive list of superb films from Scandinavia this past year. From Headhunters (one of my favourites of 2012) to the overlooked Snabba Cash (Easy Money), fare from this region has never been more accessible or memorable.
So now comes Kon-Tiki, the first Norwegian film to score both a nomination at the Golden Globe and Academy Award ceremonies, and it’s rather easy to see why.

One of the hottest Norwegian young talents Pal Sverre Valheim Hagen is set to topline Jeremy Thomas’ production Kon-Tiki, one of the Scandinavia’s most ambitious films.
Hagen (Troubled Water, Max Manus), who plays Thor Heyerdahl, will be joined by a slew of Scandinavian perspective actors forming his team, including Odd-Magnus Williamson (Reprise), Tobias Santelmann, Anders Baasmo Christiansen (Vegas), Jakob Oftebro (Max Manus) and Gustaf Skarsgard (The Way Back).
The real-life adventure tale Kon-Tiki is the story of Norwegian biologist Thor Heyerdahl, intrigued by Polynesian folklore and led by the mythical hero Kon-Tiki, suspected that the South Sea Islands had been settled by an ancient race from thousands of miles to the east, he decided to prove the possibility of his theory by duplicating the legendary voyage. Therefore, Heyerdahl together with his team went on 4,300 mile expedition on a fragile wooden raft from Peru to Polynesia to prove the islands...

Drinking and sledding may be a very bad idea in real life - growing up north of Toronto you could count on a good handful of people crashing through thin ice or getting caught up in barbed wire every winter - but if Rune Denstad Langlo’s Nord - or North in English - is any indication it can make for some compelling film. A drunken road movie in which there is scarcely any actual road, the film stars Anders Baasmo Christiansen as a former athlete recovering from a mental breakdown while riding his snowmobile across the country to meet the daughter he never knew he had with only a canister of moonshine for company.
North is a road movie comedy set in romantic natural surroundings. It is the story of the athlete Jomar who has isolated himself in a sad lonely existence after having a mental crises. On a snow scooter,...
