The "Mission: Impossible" franchise is a revolving door. Countless characters appear in one movie and then vanish without a trace, let alone a name-drop, from the next one. The only anchors from the beginning to the present are Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell.
These hi-and-byes happened behind the camera too. From the first 1996 "Mission: Impossible" up to 2015's "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation," each film had a different director. This was what kept the franchise fresh even though the scripts were formulaic (Ethan's framed for treason by the real mole in every other movie). Each director had a different style and so told the story in a different way.
Brian De Palma's original "Mission: Impossible" had the most low-key set pieces but still had his usual boiling suspense; take the scene where Ethan is accused of being a mole by his handler Kittridge...

The Nashville Film Festival will return in late September and early October with a hybrid slate of in-person and online screenings and events — with several music documentaries figuring into the programming, including docs about Brian Wilson, the pioneering 1970s all-female rock band Fanny and the MTV-era group A-ha, plus the world premiere of a film that takes John Hiatt and Jerry Douglas into Nashville’s famed RCA Studio B.
Music-based films take up only a sliver of the overall roster at the Sept. 30-Oct. 6 festival. Among narrative highlights, the festival will wrap up with A24’s “The Humans,” Stephen Karam’s adaptation of his Tony Award-winning play, with Karam and other guests from the film in attendance.
Altogether, 160 films — 45 of which are feature-length entries — have been selected for the 52nd annual festival, a little more than 50 of which will screen in-person at venues throughout Nashville. More than 30 of the features are getting their U.

Directed by Lucky McKee (The Woman) and co-written by Chris Sivertson, Kindred Spirits is an enjoyable throwback to the sort of Fill-in-the-blank From Hell thrillers that were all the rage in the 1990s – think The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (Nanny From Hell), Single White Female (Roommate From Hell) and Unlawful Entry (Cop From Hell).
Thora Birch makes a welcome return to the big screen as Chloe, a single mother whose teenage daughter Nicole (Sasha Frolova) has just started seeing her first boyfriend, Derek (Isai Torres). In turn, Chloe has decided not to tell Nicole that she’s secretly seeing Alex (Macon Blair), the father of Nicole’s best friend Shay (Shonagh Smith), who’s still hoping her separated parents will get back together.

The man who did what and then what? Robert D. Krzykowski’s first feature isn’t a throwaway joke, but an elegantly crafted and designed fantasy grounded in human values. Sam Elliott’s crusty sixty-something secret agent comes out of retirement to save the world again — will the slaying of another bizarre horror lay to rest disturbing memories of a secret WW2 mission? This thing will be a pleasant discovery for those in pursuit of ‘something completely different.’ The intentionally awkward title is jarring, but it fits because I’ve never seen anything quite like this before.

It has never been better to be Sam Elliott than it is now. 2017 brought a wonderful vehicle for the man in The Hero, giving him a lovely showcase. Kudos to filmmaker Brett Haley for doing that, after giving him a plum supporting role in I’ll See You In My Dreams. Obviously, 2018 saw him bring audiences to tears in A Star Is Born, garnering his first ever Academy Award nomination in the process. Now, as the Oscars approach, he starts off 2019 right with a starring role in a project with an amazing title. After all, who wouldn’t want to see something called The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot? Exactly. Opening this Friday, it’s the best release of the year so far. The film is a character study, though one tinged with some interesting action/suspense beats. At first glance, Calvin Barr (Elliott) just appears to be a retired old man.

In his latest podcast/interview, host Stuart Wright talks with Joe Kraemer the composer of the score for The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot.
Decades after ending World War II by assassinating Adolf Hitler in an undercover operation so covert it never existed, unsung American hero Calvin Barr is called upon by the secret services to save the day again. Now he must hunt down the fabled Bigfoot, carrier of a deadly plague that could destroy mankind, hidden deep in the Canadian wilderness. Last time he left behind the love of his life. This time his legend, as the ageing veteran confronts the mythological beast as well as his own mythic past.

It might well prove to be the shock of the year, that a film with such a long-winded, genre-baiting title is, in fact, one of the most brilliantly performed and written character dramas in quite some time. Robert D. Kryzkowski’s feature debut stars top-notch talent Sam Elliott and Aidan Turner, is scored by Christopher McQuarrie’s go-to composer Joe Kraemer, and very much feels like the sort of thing Spielberg might’ve made in the 1980s. But it’s also about Bigfoot. In fact, in many ways, in taking its subject and its plot-line so deadly, deadly seriously, it proves to be every bit as mental as its title promises.
Elliott is Calvin Barr, a quietly legendary American soldier who yes, once upon a time, was the guy who shot Hitler in the face – although it’s worth noting that Kryzkowski doesn’t play fast and loose with WW...

As if the lineup for Arrow Video FrightFest 2018 wasn't impressive enough, the festival has added two films to its slate: David Barker's Pimped (touted as an erotic thriller with a touch of Hitchcock and Brian De Palma appeal) and screenings of the restoration of John Carpenter's classic Halloween! The guest lineup includes Barbara Crampton, Leigh Whannell, Shaked Berenson (Tales of Halloween), Issa López (Tigers are not Afraid), composer Fabio Frizzi, and many more!
Press Release: Two extra films have been added to the record-breaking 2018 line-up: Pimped is director David Barker’s modern transgressive erotic thriller, an Hitchcocktail of elevated suspense and shock in the revered style of Brian De Palma, And If you’ve never seen John Carpenter’s Halloween on the big screen, now’s your best chance. The inclusion of this 4K restoration needs no explanation in anticipation of a new Michael Myers slasher being released in October.

Tfh Fearless Leader Joe Dante very astutely tip-toes around Larry Cohen’s stylistic filmmaking identity early on in King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen. Dante notes, “I would hardly call him the John Cassavetes of exploitation movies, but he does have a certain raw, visceral, realistic style.” Indeed, Larry Cohen’s signature film, Q: The Winged Serpent (1982), feels like what would happen if John Cassavetes directed a Ray Harryhausen film. And movie fans the world over are all the better for that most unlikely of authorial fusions!

Music for television is now as diverse as it has ever been — from traditional orchestra to electronica, from cool jazz to hip-hop beats. That’s partly the result of the vast increase in production in recent years, but also a matter of showrunners’ wide-ranging musical tastes.
The diversity extends to the composers themselves. Women and people of color, for example, are far more visible in TV’s musical community than in the feature-film world. There are multiple worthy Emmy contenders in the two main composition categories: music for a series and music for a limited series, movie or special. Here we’ve singled out a few of them.

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music — whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song — can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 35 films that best expressed this notion this year.
From seasoned composers (e.g. Ennio Morricone, John Williams, Carter Burwell, and Michael Giacchino) to accomplished musicians (e.g. Jonny Greenwood and Johnny Jewel), as well as a smattering of soundtracks (e.g. Mistress America, Magic Mike Xxl, and Tangerine), each musical example perfectly transported us to the world of the film. Both of those composers are featured in “Score: A Film Music Documentary,” currently in the works. You can see Williams and Shore in the HitFix exclusive clip from the doc at the top of this post, which spotlights movie music recorded in Studio 1 of Abbey Road Studios — the same room where the Beatles recorded their orchestral music. The clip also features Joe Kraemer talking about the recording space while he works on this year’s “Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.” The documentary will explore the power of film music as an art form and will delve into the creative and technical process of scoring a movie. As director and executive producer Matt Schrader describes it, “‘Score’ is about how composers...

Hailed as “relentlessly thrilling” (Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly) and filled with “jaw-dropping stunts” (Scott Mendelson, Forbes), the global hit Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation takes off on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and On Demand December 15, 2015 from Paramount Home Media Distribution.

“Mission: Impossible” has been captivating audiences with high-octane action sequences ever since the film franchise launched in 1996. From the iconic wire hang in the first film to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge shootout in “M:i 3” to the Burj Khalifa sequence in 2011’s “Ghost Protocol,” there was a long list of thrilling and original set pieces that Christopher McQuarrie had to live up to when he took on the fifth film in the espionage series. The opera house scene was McQuarrie’s answer to that challenge in this year’s “Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.” Tom Cruise hanging off the side of a a plane 5,000 feet in the air caught the attention of anybody who watched the film’s trailer, but it’s the elegant and heart-pounding opera sequence that really wowed audiences upon the movie’s release. The scene features Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and Benji (Simon Pegg) searching for a suspect at the Vienna Opera House.

In his score for Kingsman: The Secret Service, Henry Jackman wants you to know he’s a James Bond fan. He just doesn’t want to tell you. Monte Norman’s iconic guitar riff pops in and out of his score, and brassy John Barry flourishes pepper the background music of Matthew Vaughn’s latest pulpy indulgence. Vaughn and comic book brute Mark Millar’s spy thriller struck a chord with audiences in February with gaudy, gory violence and in-jokes to the Ian Fleming novels it draws from. Strangely though, Jackman’s half-baked music never follows suit, tiptoeing around its homages rather than fully committing to its Roger Moore era obsessions.

The music of Kingsman wants its both ways, retro while still feeling fresh enough for modern box office, a shared paradox with The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,...

Tom Cruise is back in action as Ethan Hunt from today with the release of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. Expect more daredevil stunts, nail-biting tension and Simon Pegg quips aplenty as the Imf face down a new threat in the form of The Syndicate.
We've already had our say on the film (too many stunts, not enough story), but what are the rest saying about Rogue Nation?
Variety
"Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie negotiates with characteristic cleverness and a sly respect for the sheer durability of genre; at once questioning and reaffirming the pleasures of cinematic espionage, this is the rare sequel that leaves its franchise feeling not exhausted but surprisingly resurgent at 19 years and counting."
The Hollywood Reporter
"Thanks to a sharp script that springs a real surprise or two and a pace that never slackens, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation rates as the second-best of the numerous franchise titles of the summer,...

One of things that has been most interesting about the "Mission: Impossible" series has been the way they've played with the iconography of the original '60s show. When I worked as a closed-captioner, we got a contract to do "Mission: Impossible," and I must have done twenty episodes of it myself. I remember being struck by just how minimalist it was in terms of production value, and how clearly they relied on certain things over and over. When the first film was released 20 years, it was interesting to watch fans of the old show freak out at the notion of Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) being revealed as the bad guy. It is exactly what I loved about it, though. Brian DePalma has always loved to tweak genre convention and the language of the thriller, and watching him make this big slick uber-commercial movie that basically cast James Bond as Blofeld,...

Much like the directors for the Mission: Impossible series thus far, the composers have been a pretty varied bunch. From Danny Elfman to Hans Zimmer to Michael Giacchino, A-list composers have had their hand in playing with and adding to Lalo Schifrin's classic theme. Now it's Joe Kraemer's turn. I’m usually not all that interested in a film’s box-office haul because it has no bearing on the quality of the movie, but I make exceptions when it’s a film in need of a sequel. Jack Reacher deserves a sequel. American audiences weren’t much help here as they failed to turn out in big numbers for what is essentially a mid-budget action throwback. Thankfully though the addition of overseas earnings was enough to nudge Paramount in the right direction. The film is only the second with Christopher McQuarrie in the director’s chair (with his first coming twelve years prior), and it stars Tom Cruise in the title role as a drifter seemingly unable to avoid trouble. It’s a damn fine movie and hopefully not the last adaptation we see of Lee Child‘s bestselling novels. Keep reading to see what I learned from the commentary track for Jack Reacher. Jack Reacher...

For all the negative press Tom Cruise seems to have attracted over the years, it’s a testament to the man’s work rate and sense in career choices that he’s still one of the world’s biggest stars, and with Oblivion and All You Need Is Kill already shot, he’s about to unleash his latest as he takes on the role of a towering, blonde and hard as all hell ex-military policeman and makes it entirely his own in Jack Reacher, an adaptation of Lee Child’s bookOne Shot.
For all the buzz around the film which has largely centered on just how different Cruise is physically from the character in the book, it’s a testament to the filmmakers that he still fits the role entirely.

Paramount has announced the Blu-Ray release of Christopher McQuarrie’s Jack Reacher for May. The film stars Tom Cruise, Jai Courtney and Robert Duvall.
There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned bit of fun by way of simplistic, yet effective action. Christopher McQuarrie’s Jack Reacher is the perfect 90s Tom Cruise action film that just so happened to be released in 2012. Seriously, it’s loads of fun. The stripped down and light approach that McQuarrie approaches Reacher with is a breath of fresh air when compared to other overly-complicated action pictures.
Cruise takes the role head-on with a performance that’s trademark Cruise, yet still fun to watch. He’s the smartest, toughest and biggest bad ass of them all and Jack Reacher doesn’t bother a single second showing us something that Reacher cannot do.
It opened modestly in the Us, with rumors of a sequel sort of fading,...

Cast: Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Werner Herzog
Running Time: 2 hrs 10 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: December 21, 2012
Plot: An ex-soldier (Cruise) is consulted to solve a mystery behind a sniper’s attack in Pittsburgh.

Expectations: I have been curious about this film ever since it first started showing up on IMDb – what good would another action character do for Tom Cruise anyway? And whoa, is that Werner Herzog in the cast?
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher: Cruise, in another role that he is trying to make into a franchise, is a bit too sarcastic with this character, who comes off as superhuman without Jason Bourne’s Manchurian Candidate-like armed forces programming. Reacher is a really great shot...

The Oscars are a little over two months away, and with so many fantastic films released throughout this year, the anticipation surrounding the announcement of the nominations next month is running on high.
So far, we’ve had the shortlists for the Best Animated Feature, the Best Visual Effects, and the Best Documentary categories.
Now the Academy has announced the list of 104 films that are eligible in the Best Original Score category, and it’s going to be very interesting to see what makes the final cut come nominations time next month.

As far as I'm concerned, the two most memorable scores of the year belong to Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild. That said, I made an egregious and unforgivable mistake when filling out my Critics' Choice nominations and forgot to include not one of them, but Both of them! Shame. I feel it. Now I have to hope my fellow Bfca members came through where I failed. However, we will discuss Critics' Choice nominations more on the upcoming episodes of the RopeofSilicon podcast, for now we're talking Oscar as the Academy has released a complete list of all 104 original scores competing for Best Original Score at the 2013 Oscars. I have not yet posted my predictions for Best Original Score and while I am making a fuss above concerning Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild, I think both of those stand a very strong chance at a nomination this year.

Global bestselling author Lee Child did not set out to be a bestselling author. After attending law school in his native Great Britain, Child signed on with the U.K..s Granada Television, and spent the next 18 years working as a presentation director on some of the most respected shows and series during what some critics term .the golden age. of British television. But a corporate restructuring left Child without a job in 1995, and so he sat down to write a book, eventually titled Killing Floor. Published in 1997, his debut novel featured a central character named Jack Reacher, who immediately captivated readers. 17 Reacher novels later, Child.s (and the readers.) affinity for the character has not lessened.
