American actor and martial artist of Chinese and Japanese descent Kane Kosugi will appear opposite Gotham star Ben McKenzie and Beyond Skyline actress Bojana Novakovic in a new horror movie Bloat based on Japanese folklore scary legends. The story unfolds around a mom (Novakovich) and two sons who are vacationing in Japan while the father of the family (McKenzie), a military officer, is away stationed in Turkey. During their stay outside Tokyo, their younger son almost drowns in a lake. Soon after the accident, the parents realize that something is wrong with their boy. Kosugi plays McKenzie’s character’s friend who comes for rescue. He will join Bon Koizumi, great-grandson of the legendary Japanese folklorist and horror story collector Lafcadio Hearn and the director of his museum.

Fans of action, rejoice! The amazing martial arts star Scott Adkins has a new movie that was released this past week! Adkins has starred as Boyka in the sequels to the 2002 prison boxing movie, Undisputed, which had transitioned into an incredible series of martial arts films, and Adkins himself won awards from the Jackie Chan Action Awards for Best Fight and Best Actor for the most recent entry, Boyka: Undisputed. And if Jackie Chan feels he’s earned that award, you know it’s some amazing stuff! You can also see him in films like Ninja, Ninja II: Shadow of the Tear, Doctor Strange, The Brothers Grimsby, Zero Dark Thirty, The Expendables 2, he had a cameo in Netflix’s Day Shift, and he’ll be in the upcoming John Wick 4.

Revenge of the Ninja is up there with the best American Martial Arts films ever made. Star Sho Kosugi had made a big impression in Cannon’s Enter the Ninja the year before, stealing the show from his (heavily doubled) co-star Franco Nero. Ninja’s became such a sensation that, in the sequel, Kosugi would be elevated to the lead, becoming the hero of one of The Cannon Group’s most profitable action movies of the eighties.
In this one, Kosugi plays Cho, a former Ninja whose home is attacked by a rival clan. He flees to the United States with his surviving son, Kane, to start an import/export business. Soon, he discovers that his company is being used to import drugs, while at the same time, an evil, demon-masked Ninja is terrorizing the city. Knowing “only ninja can defeat ninja,” Cho once again dons his ninja-yoroi to take on the baddies,...

"Its been a long time since I killed anyone." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for One Night in Bangkok, a hit man action thriller set in the iconic Thai city. It's the latest film from Thai action director Wych Kaosayananda (aka Wych Kaos) and is getting a direct-to-dvd release at the end of the summer. It's described as "a homage to Collateral, with a shocking twist," and the story follows an assassin who hires a cab driver in Bangkok to unknowingly escort him to each of his targets - five hits in six hours. Will they pull it off? Mark Dacascos stars as the hit man, joined by Kane Kosugi, Vanida Golten, Prinya Intachai, Sahajak Boonthanakit, and Julie Condra. This looks pretty damn cool, not only as a Collateral homage but as a hit man getting revenge the only way he knows how - taking out the bad guys.

It’s the tail end of the twenty-first century and Earth has nearly overstayed its welcome with dwindling resources and over-population. Scientists believe they can release the CO2 pockets underneath Mars’ surface and move the Red Planet from -50 degrees Celsius into a human-friendly temperature and atmosphere. So mankind sends rockets of moss and cockroaches to commence the process, a half-century passing before a team of colonists can finally journey forth. Everything should be ready for this hand-selected group under Ko Honda’s (Shun Oguri) supervision: go to Mars, kill the cockroaches, and return home with stories of our salvation via a new frontier. It sounds so simple and yet no one is prepared for what they’ll find because no one but Honda and the Japanese government know the truth.
That itself is a wild premise ripe for science fiction fun, but manga creators Yû Sasuga and Kenichi Tachibana are hardly finished.

Ahhhh, movie marketing – that most venerable of fib-tellers… 2 Guns: Zero Tolerance is the latest movie from writer/director Wych Kaosayananda, who previously helmed Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever and Tekken 2 (which I liked a lot more than most it would seem). Now when I say latest, it’s the latest Version of this film released. You see, 2 Guns: Zero Tolerance has something of a troubled history. Not only does this film have nothing to do with the Denzel Washington/Mark Wahlberg film 2 Guns; it also doesn’t really star Scott Adkins!

Terra Formars
Director: Takashi Miike
Writer: Kazuki Nakashima
Given his mindboggling output, it would be strange not to have a most anticipated list not featuring Japanese auteur Takashi Miike, who usually has several projects premiering during any given year. As far as we can tell, he only has one title scheduled for release in 2016, the intriguing Terra Formers, a live action manga adaptation which sounds an awful lot like Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers (1997). Humans deposit some moss and cockroaches on Mars in hopes of fostering an inhabitale environment for later use on the Red Planet. In the year 2599, they return to find a species of dangerous humanoid cockroaches. The production is the first Japanese film to shoot in Iceland. A cast headlined by Rinko Kikuchi (Babel; Pacific Rim) has us even more excited for what sounds like one of Miike’s most extravagantly gonzo creations yet.

“Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever” director Wych Kaosayananda’s latest, “Tekken 2: Kazuya’s Revenge” (formerly “Tekken 2: A Man Called X”) has sneaked its way onto DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD this week. You can grab a copy of the movie from Amazon and other places if you’re so inclined, but frankly, after seeing this trailer for it I’m not sure if you’ll want to. And I actually liked the first “Tekken,” which starred Jon Foo, so I’m a bit disappointed the sequel is not only obviously working on a shoestring budget, but I’m not sure it even makes sense in the context of the last movie. Kane Kosugi, son of the legendary Sho Kosugi, stars in this one. If nothing else, the martial arts should look pretty convincing. But hey, maybe it’s just me. You can judge for yourself. Suffering from amnesia, a young...

Yup, they’re making another one. And this one, we’re told, is a prequel. I dunno why, but apparently there is a lot about the 2010 movie’s futuristic tournament fighting world left to explore, so instead of going forward, they’re going backward. Hey, whatever works, I guess. The man who will be fronting the latest “Tekken” movie is none other than Kane Kosugi, son of the legendary Sho Kosugi. The younger Kosugi has carved out a very nice career for himself in martial arts films in Japan and abroad. He can currently be seen fighting alongside Scott Adkins in “Ninja: Shadow of a Tear,” a film that has plenty of ninjas, but oddly, not a lot of shadowy tears. According to Kotaku, the prequel will now be called “Tekken: A Man Called X.” When the sequel was announced almost two years ago, the original title was “Tekken: Rise of the Tournament.

They both head out on competing treks, but only one can take control of the community. This French film from the late ’90s is a gorgeously-photographed look at a people and a region seldom scene in today’s world. “Today” is a tricky word though in regard to this film in that the movie could take place in 1999 or 1919 or anytime in between. Far from old-fashioned, it shows rivals battling for respect alongside the clash between new and old beliefs, and...

I’m a huge fan of the work of one Mr. Scott Adkins, the British-born actor come martial arts performer who made a huge splash with Undisputed 2 and has since carved out one hell of a fine kick-ass movie career.
One of my favourite Adkins flicks is the Isaac Florentine directed Ninja (2009) in which Adkins plays Casey, a Westerner studying Ninjutsu in Japan, who is asked by the Sensei to return to New York to protect the legendary Yoroi Bitsu, an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Koga Ninja. The film was a huge throwback to the likes of Cannon Films in the 80s and the heyday of Dtv action movies.

An ancient hero returns with a vengeance! Looks like Ninja is more than ready to fight again, and we’re happy that we finally have something new about Isaac Florentine‘s upcoming Ninja 2! As you probably know, we’re talking about Florentine’s follow-up to 2009′s Ninja movie which starred Scott Adkins as an American martial artist named Casey Bowman who travels to New York City in order to protect an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Kōga ninja.
So, the most important thing at this moment is that Isaac Florentine will direct Ninja 2 from David N. White‘s script, and that British action actor Scott Adkins is back in the business as well as Mika Hijii who starred as Namiko Takeda.

Principal photography hasn't begun yet for Isaac Florentine's martial arts flick Ninja 2 but that hasn't stopped Nu Image/Millennium Films from whipping up a poster art. While the artwork is nothing more than a rehash of material from the first installment, the tagline makes it pretty clear where the story is heading - the revenge-plot direction. Scott Adkins reprise the role of the American ninja Casey Bowman, along with Mika Hijii as Namiko. The antagonist roles include Kane Kosugi as Nakabara and Shun Sugata as Goro. The ninja film isn’t widely loved like the samurai genre, and that’s mostly due to the lack of any significant ninja movies, especially compared to what Akira Kurosawa delivered in his career. This is a tad unfair, but let’s change that.
After directing Enter the Ninja in 1981, Menahem Golan wanted to follow this hit for his Golan-Globus Films (Cannon Films) with a sequel. In what has become widely recognized as one of the best ninja movies ever made, 1983′s Revenge of the Ninja features some of the coolest ninja action and violence, as well as sharp direction by the newcomer Sam Firstenberg, who would go on to direct some of the more popular films for Cannon Films, including American Ninja and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogalo.

“Choy Lee Fut” should be cause for excitement for martial arts fans, given that it stars genre godfather Sammo Hung alongside his real life son Sammy Hung for the first time. Back in mid-February, we posted a rough-cut trailer to Choy Lee Fut that stars Sammo Hung as a Kung Fu master and Sammy Hung & Kane Kosug as his students. There were some scenes containing incomplete greenscreen effects but now a polished version has arrived with the background inserted. Former Jackie Chan Stunt Team member Sam Wong served as co-director and fight choreographer. The story revolves around two best friends in Europe (played by real-life best friends Sammy Hung and Kane Kosugi) who love martial arts. Not too long ago, an incomplete and unofficial trailer for the upcoming Chinese martial arts film Choy Lee Fut (aka Choy Li Fut), was released. While the trailer showed promise, it was hard to really get excited about yet another martial arts movie that seemed to rely heavily on CGI. However now that the studios have released an official full trailer, fans of action veteran Sammo Hung can book place this film on their must see list.
Official plot synopsis:

Since my Chinese is a little rough around the edges (read: non-existent), the specifics of the upcoming Sammo Hung flick “Choy Lee Fut” — which is named after a form of Chinese martial arts — are lost on me. From what I can gather, it’s just another martial arts flick set within the world of organized fighting. The embedded trailer is a rough one, as some of the footage shows the actors performing in front of a green screen. That having been said, I’m always down for a little Sammo Hung-choreographed action, even if it comes in extremely brief bits and pieces. I’m sure more information will pop up as the release date closes in, but for the meantime, this will have to do. Here’s a brief synopsis courtesy of Screen Power: The film is based around martial arts enthusiasts Kane Kosugi and Timmy Hung who go...

It seems like the last few years have been, more than anything, both a transitional period and an opportunity to learn for Ryu Seung-Wan. Transitional because his last feature film 다찌마와리 (Dachimawa Lee) might be considered only a minor work (despite being quite entertaining, particularly if you're in tune with all the references it's filled with), but Ryu also experienced how frustrating the funding system in Chungmuro has become, relegating his promising sageuk zombie actioner 야차 (Yacha) to an eternal "work in progress" status. Call it an inevitable reaction or whatever you wish, but Ryu is starting to approach the business of making films a little like Lee Joon-Ik: working on a lot of projects at the same time, and then going forward with the first which secures enough funding.
A recent Cine21 article hinted that a possible collaboration with Kane Kosugi will be one of those projects. Kosugi was...

Killer Imports [1] is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine. Whenever I appear on the Film Junk podcast and review a film, I invariably have a negative opinion. And when I write film reviews for the Film Junk web site, I invariably have a positive opinion, even for films that many Film Junk readers would consider bad. The discrepancy has to do with the fact that I don’t get to choose which films to review on the podcast. I find it easier to give reasons on why I like something rather than why I don’t like something. So for me, writing a positive review is easier to write and seems more worthwhile since someone may be influenced by a positive review to watch a film that I feel deserves attention. No...
