- After completing her degree at Carnegie Mellon University, she did graduate work in organic chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. She taught science at a private girls' school. When her youngest child started nursery school, she began to write.
- She won the prestigious John Newbery Medal twice.
- She wrote 16 children's novels and illustrated three picture books.
- Won the Newberry Medal for children's literature in 1968 for the book "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" and again in 1997 for "The View From Saturday.".
