For four seasons stretched across six years, Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan infuriated and dazzled lovers of mind-bending sci-fi in equal measure with "Westworld." Some would have you believe the pair's extremely loose small-screen re-imagining of Michael Crichton's 1973 "Westworld" film and its sequels peaked with its first season ... and they'd be right, so far as when it came to telling a twisty, layered story about the nature of consciousness and what it even means to have agency as clearly and cohesively as possible. But as guilty as later seasons were of being needlessly convoluted in order to stay one step ahead of viewers, it's also hard not to (perhaps begrudgingly) admire a show that not only respected its audience but actively goaded them into trying to solve the increasingly baffling puzzle boxes it threw at them ahead of time.
Unfortunately, Joy and Nolan didn't get to go full galaxy-brain...

So what happens when your first anthology was cancelled but you’ve got round three on the back burner? Well, actually, it’s complicated. We’ve spoken previously about Mick Garris’ Masters of Horror, which brought life into the anthology genre when we needed it again. A year later, Fear Itself brings anthology horror back to primetime.
Now, if you’re me, anthologies are kind of your life. This is one of my favorite parts of Horror, and so being able to see what new takes and tales are on the horizon excites me. Fear Itself was essentially the spiritual third season of Masters. The first episode Eater drug me down the rabbit hole and before I knew...

When I am on my deathbed, I will still be recommending Carnivale to whoever will listen. It’s also depressing as fuck. There are few moments when you get a chance to feel actual happiness in any scene, or for any character in the show. Oh, and they decided to cut the cord leaving it on a cliffhanger. More on that later. For now, let’s get into the wonderful world that is, Carnivale.
Between the years of 1990 and 1992 while Daniel Knauf was working as an insurance broker he was dreaming of something bigger, much like most of us, and decided to use his energy towards something much grander. A story of good vs evil against the backdrop...

With Alan Wake 2 finally getting that release date, you’re probably wondering about certain aspects of the game. Namely, the addition of a new character in Saga Anderson in Alan Wake 2 as a playable protagonist. No need to worry, as Gamespot has you covered.
Sitting down with Remedy Entertainment creative director Sam Lake, performance director Hannah Price, and actress Melanie Liburd, the group reveal just who Saga is, where she’s come from, and more importantly, her place in the story.
Obviously, given the journey of Alan Wake 2, the game’s story has changed over the course of the past 13 years. The team began thinking of introducing a co-protagonist “a few versions ago.”
“We wanted to be really, really ambitious with the story,” says Lake. “So having multiple points of view in the story, and having more tonal shifts with that, just felt like the right way to go. And out of that,...

It's been over a month since HBO's "Westworld" was canceled, leaving four seasons of occasionally convoluted prestige TV storytelling unresolved, but we're still getting details about what went on behind the scenes and what the show's streaming fate will be. The latest news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which cites anonymous sources indicating that "Westworld" could have possibly continued with a lower budget and on a different streaming platform than HBO Max.
According to THR's sources, showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan passed on the idea of producing "Westworld" season 5 on a reduced budget for Warner Bros. Discovery's Fast (Free Ad-supported Streaming TV) platform. The ratings for "Westworld" had declined precipitously from an audience of 1.8 million, when its first season aired, to about 0.03 million viewers for the fourth season, and it seems Warner Bros. Discovery decided to cut its losses and leverage the show as a Fast tax write-off.

How the hell has Kieron Gillen never written a summer event comic before?
Gillen is the writer behind Eisner- and Hugo-nominated comics such as perennial Den of Geek favorites Once & Future and The Wicked + The Divine. But even before that, he was part of that mid-aughts wave of Image writers who took over Marvel’s flagship books. Gillen wrote a couple of excellent Utopia-era X-Men books (Generation Hope and Uncanny X-Men), as well as a beloved run with Kid Loki that helped inspire one Disney+ show and a relaunch of Young Avengers with Jamie McKelvie that is likely going to have an impact on the MCU further down the line. And yet, somehow, his first blockbuster comics crossover is out in 2022.

The latest batch of Italian TV series for the international market is a mix of genres spanning from a new Elena Ferrante adaptation made for Netflix, to two Rai reconstructions of the country’s terrorism-plagued past and Sky’s spaghetti Western “Django.”
Django
This English-language reimagining of the world of “Django,” the cult 1966 Sergio Corbucci spaghetti Western that launched the career of Italian icon Franco Nero, is a Sky Studios and Canal Plus original. The show’s cast includes Noomi Rapace, Nicholas Pinnock and Matthias Schoenaerts. Director Francesca Comencini has called it “a universal story with a narrative that celebrates diversity and minorities.”
Esterno Notte
Marco Bellocchi is in post on this limited TV series from Rai Fiction about the 1978 kidnapping and assassination of former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro by Red Brigades terrorists. The veteran helmer previously recounted Moro’s still-mysterious abduction from the viewpoint of one of his...

Italy’s Lux Vide, which has been pushing into the U.S. and international markets with high-end shows such as “Medici” and “Leonardo,” recently appointed former Warner Bros. Italy senior exec Barbara Pavone as its chief marketing and sales officer.
As part of her job Pavone, who is attending Mipcom, is dealing with Lux’s international co-productions and partnerships. Not surprisingly, one of her biggest challenges is retaining IP when she negotiates with streamers such as Netflix.
“It’s a privilege to work with global streaming platforms,” says Pavone who recently helped seal Lux’s first deal with a major streamer, details of which are being kept under wraps.
“For Lux it’s a priority to really act as a media company and retain as much as possible [of] the rights,” she notes.

Exclusive: The Shield exec producer Scott Rosenbaum is developing an adaptation of Italian drama series Sandokan with Devils producer Lux Vide.
Rosenbaum, who was also an EP on NBC’s Chuck, is set as showrunner for the project, which will refocus the popular European pirate story with a female focus.
It is part of a push into the U.S. and international markets for Luca and Matilde Bernabei’s Italian production company, which has also set Andrew Levitas to develop series about Caravaggio and Michelangelo.
Eight-part series Sandokan is a fresh take on the 1970s series from public broadcaster Rai. It was developed by Italian writers Alessandro Sermoneta and Davide Lantieri and will lean heavily into a female perspective, as told by our heroine, Lady Marianna – a noble woman who has been kidnapped by Sandokan and his band of pirates, eventually, willingly joining their crusade and becoming one of the...

Following on “Medici: Masters of Florence,” with Dustin Hoffman and Richard Madden, and “Leonardo,” starring Aidan Turner, Italy’s Lux Vide is teaming with ex-Hasbro chief content officer Stephen J. Davis (“Transformers”) to produce what may be its most ambitious production yet: “The Rising.” The English-language historical drama series focuses on what it described as the “human, secular story” of Jesus Christ. The creative team will shortly begin pitching potential U.S. partners.
Executive producer of NBC’s “The Blacklist” and creator and showrunner of HBO’s “Carnivàle,” Daniel Knauf is attached as “The Rising’s” showrunner.
Lux Vide CEO Luca Bernabei and Davis serve as the series’ producers.
“The Rising” will be directed by Italy’s Jan Michelini, who broke through directing episodes of “Medici: Masters of Florence.” Its composer is Carlos Rafael Rivera, best known for writing the score of Netflix hit “The Queen’s Gambit,” and an...

At a time when climate change is ravaging Earth and real-life interest in space organizations from NASA to SpaceX has been renewed, there is no shortage of television shows delivering interesting and informative takes on such travel. But while series such as Disney Plus’ “The Right Stuff” goes for the nostalgia play and Netflix’s “Away” contemplates the sacrifice made to leave family behind, it is Nickelodeon’s “The Astronauts” that delivers the truly unique picture of unequipped, untrained children accidentally being launched into space, now thrust together as a makeshift team to survive.
“We are being presented — especially in 2020 with all that’s happened — with portraying a future as a hopeful thing. I think people are really hungry for that — ‘if we all set aside our differences and work together toward a common goal, then we have a very bright and hopeful future,'” “The Astronauts” showrunner Daniel Knauf tells Variety.

Since its inception in 1979, Nickelodeon has been forward thinking with its programming. Yet it took over 41 years for the network to go after the final frontier, a live action space travel show for kids. To make an ambitious show like that happen, they needed the right co-pilot, landing the director of Apollo 13, Ron Howard.
Howard serves as executive producer for The Astronauts, a new live-action kids series coming to Nickelodeon on Nov. 13. It’s the first kids series to come from Howard and Brian Grazer’s production company, Imagine Entertainment, which launched a new division in 2019 called Imagine Kids+Family, headed up by Stephanie Sperber. In early meetings between the network and production company, the prospect of doing a space show for kids was exciting to both parties.

Kieron Gillen is coming back to Marvel, and his new project is a really big deal.
The Eternals are simultaneously Jack Kirby’s weirdest and most straightforward creations, and with them coming to the big screen in February, bringing them back to the comics makes a ton of sense. Pairing Gillen with Esad Ribic shows Marvel is not messing around with it.
“I said if I was ever to do a book again at Marvel, it would have to be something I’ve never done before. This is exactly that. This is me teaming up with literally my favourite artist of the epic, taking one of those lightning-storm Kirby visions and re-making it to be as new as the day it was forged,” Gillen said in a statement. “While Esad makes whole worlds on the page, I’m applying all the skills I’ve developed when I was away. It’s a lot.

Nickelodeon plans to launch new series from Imagine Entertainment and Tyler Perry as well as introduce a “SpongeBob Squarepants” prequel series that includes contributions from the voice cast of the original series, all part of its latest bid under top executive Brian Robbins to lure kids and parents to it screens in an era when younger viewers have a dizzying array of other choices.
Robbins, who came aboard as head of Nickelodeon in late 2018, has been eager to inject Nickelodeon with some of the spirit it had when he produced some of its top series, like “Kenan and Kel” and “All That” (He revived the latter series for the network last year). Among his goals has been to launch more programs that can be “co-viewed,”or watched by kids and their parents together; showcase a more diverse range of stories, so that a range of kids from different backgrounds can...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: If you could give one canceled show one extra season (if only to wrap things up in a better way), which would it be?
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
It wasn’t that we were watching “Hannibal” just to see Bryan Fuller and company get to the events of “Silence of the Lambs,” but that was sure a fun thing looming on the horizon. The “Manhunter”/”Red Dragon” arc was probably the show’s most conventional, but it was all the more intriguing for that odd disconnect, of a frequently told story going through the mind of one of TV’s most original storytellers and...

Daniel Knauf’s groundbreaking show Carnivale premiered on HBO back in 2003 to a large audience of 5.3 million viewers. The parallel stories of Ben Hawkins, a travelling carnie with strange healing powers and Brother Justin, a Methodist preacher on a mission, captivated audiences initially, but the show struggled to maintain its high ratings. Despite the awards and critical acclaim, Carnivale’s running cost of $2 million per episode was deemed too expensive and the show was eventually cancelled by HBO after only two seasons.
Like many shows ended long before their time, Carnivale has since gained a huge cult following of devotees fascinated by the enigmatic themes and overarching story line that never came to fruition. A few years after the shows demise, some of these dedicated fans created CarnyCon 2006 Live!, an event attended by both cast and crew from Carnivale. The demand for the shows continued existence is clearly there, yet...

Dracula, Season 1, Episode 9, “Four Roses”
Written by Daniel Knauf story by Jesse Peyronel
Directed by Tim Fywell
Airs Fridays 10pm (Et) on NBC
In its last few episodes Dracula has done what seemed impossible, especially after its meandering and somewhat disappointing first half season. The last three episodes have actually exceeded expectations, showing that things really aren’t as bad as they seemed. With its penultimate episode, “Four Roses”, Dracula has righted many of its early wrongs, starting with Grayson (the awesome Jonathan Rhys Meyers) declaring war on the Order.
Last week’s episode, “Come to Die”, was probably one of the freshman series’ best. Tightly wound and full of excellent plot twists that pushed the story forward, it was a great lead in to the even better “Four Roses”. Dracula has its problems, it has many of them in fact, but one of its great gifts is that it...

Throughout the 80s and 90s, the horror genre was all about sequels. In the 2000s, it’s been all about remakes. But something interesting has been happening in the last couple years, a movement that looks to be replacing those nonstop remakes with something a little bit different.
I’m of course talking about TV adaptations of popular horror movies, and recent shows like Bates Motel and Hannibal have proven that the small screen is a terrific way to reboot popular properties, while at the same time not angering or alienating the diehard fans of those properties. True, the move from the big screen to the small screen is nothing new in the world of horror, but the results have never been as successful or impressive as they have been in recent years.

Despite the dead-on-arrival 2010 film, it seems “The Wolfman” is being revived for the small screen, thanks in no small part to successful shows like the Fox show “Sleepy Hollow,” NBC’s “Dracula” or any of the other dozens of vampire-centric, fairy tale-esque, horror-tinged shows currently on air. Deadline reports NBC has tapped “Dracula” showrunner Daniel Knauf to shepherd the new take which is “described as a supernatural thriller that explores what it means to be a man and to be a human.” It’s unclear if the show will be set in the present day.Staying with news from the Peacock network, Deadline also reports “Eagle Eye” and “Disturbia” director D.J. Caruso will helm the pilot for NBC’s “Tin Man.” Don’t be fooled by the title, it has nothing to do with the Land of Oz. On the contrary, the show “is a psychological crime thriller that focuses...

NBC is to adapt The Wolfman for television.
The network will team up once again with writer Daniel Knauf, who currently serves as showrunner on Dracula, reports Deadline.
The Wolfman will be based on the 2010 film version, which starred Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.
The franchise originated with a 1941 movie featuring horror legend Lon Chaney Jr in the title role.
NBC's new adaptation is being eyed for Friday nights - in the slot currently occupied by Dracula - where it will air alongside supernatural drama Grimm.
Knauf previously created HBO's cult series Carnivàle, and worked as a writer and consulting producer on Spartacus: War of the Damned.

Daniel Knauf, the executive producer/head writer on NBC's "Dracula", is developing a similar new treatment of another classic monster - "The Wolfman".
Entitled "The WolfMan," the supernatural thriller series is inspired not by the 1941 classic but by the critically reviled 2010 remake starring Benicio Del Toro.
The story centers on Lawrence Talbot, who is afflicted by an ancient curse to become a werewolf. Knauf is writing and executive producing with Scott Stuber and Quan Phung, Stuber was a producer on the film.
Should all go well, the series would join NBC's "Friday supernatural block" currently anchored by "Grimm" and "Dracula".

NBC continues its push to develop new genre projects and it has been revealed that they’re going to bring The Wolfman to the small screen. According to Deadline, NBC is working with Daniel Knauf, who is the executive producer and head writer of their new Dracula TV series. As opposed to the 1941 horror classic, this adaptation is said to be based on the more recent 2010 version:
“The WolfMan, produced by Universal Pictures sibling Universal TV and Stuber’s studio-based Bluegrass Films & TV, is described as a supernatural thriller that explores what it means to be a man and to be human. It centers on Lawrence Talbot, who is afflicted by an ancient curse and jacks into the powerful, primordial soul of the alpha-predator…”

Could Dracula get some monster-mash company on Friday nights?
NBC is developing a werewolf drama from Dracula executive producer Daniel Knauf, the network confirmed. The project is based on Universal’s (rather forgettable) 2010 film The Wolfman (the one that starred Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins), which was itself based on a previous 1941 version. Naturally the TV series is likely to chart its own creative path.
One can certainly understand why NBC wants to brand Fridays with a horror block: Grimm has been solid-ish, and the concept helps fill prime-time holes on a notoriously tough night of the week with original scripted programming.

It's taken a few episodes to find its footing, but Daniel Knauf's recent spin on "Dracula" has finally come into its own, making for some great TV with a classic character. Universal is obviously pleased as well because they're ready to let Knauf sink his claws into another of their iconic characters.
According to Deadline, NBC is developing a contender for its Friday supernatural block anchored by "Grimm," which is currently paired with "Dracula." It hails from "Dracula" executive producer/head writer Knauf ("Carnivale") and is based on Universal Pictures’ Scott Stuber-produced 2010 feature The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, which in turn was a remake of the 1941 movie.
"The Wolfman" is one of two projects Knauf has at NBC, along with a supernatural telenovela produced by Electus that is part of the company’s 3-for-1 telenovela deal at NBC, intended to result in a 13-episode order.

Matthew traces a literary parallel between Ayn Rand's infamous Atlas Shrugged and NBC's new autumn drama, Dracula...
Sleepy Hollow, The Following, and Hannibal are all recent television shows that represent a growing trend amongst the major networks in that they are attempting to provide mature and engaging horror based content fit for the consumption of a mass audience. NBC in particular seems very interested in creating intellectually engaging content, especially with the recent addition of Dracula to their late autumn line-up. What makes Dracula such an intellectually stimulating show is that many of the show's themes and ideology appear to have come straight out of one of the most controversial novels of the twentieth century, Ayn Rand’s magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged.

I feel like, more than having a through-line, this episode consisted of a lot of scenes that offered one or two new details or characters or relationships, but ultimately there was not a good flow. That makes this episode particularly difficult to recap. Luckily for the most part, a correct timeline makes no difference.
Naturally, let’s start with Grayson. (I still feel weird calling him Grayson, but that is the name he has chosen.) He wants to buy out Laurent’s shares in the oil concern; Laurent laughs and refuses to sell at any price. Grayson hires Jonathan to be his “vice president of public affairs,” someone to help him navigate British society and customs. This will have a two-pronged effect for Greyson. Dracula, Season 1, Episode 2, “A Whiff of Sulphur”
Written by Daniel Knauf
Directed by Steve Shill
Airs Fridays at 10pm (Et) on NBC
Dracula’s first episode was sinfully good, giving this week’s follow up a lot to live up to. For the most part, “A Whiff of Sulphur” is an entertaining episode that advances the storyline and gives us some much needed background on our characters. This may only be the second episode, but it’s clear that Dracula is a show that moves fast. By episode’s end, Mina (Jessica De Gouw) and Harker’s (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) relationship is effectively over, though Harker is sure to try for some kind of reconciliation. The only thing that the writers are taking slowly, so far, is the relationship between Mina and Dracula (Jonathon Rhys Meyers).

Dracula, Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot”
Written by Cole Haddon and Daniel Knauf
Directed by Steve Shill
Airs Fridays at 10pm (Et) on NBC
Dracula is one of literature’s most enduring and adapted characters. What often sets each production apart is their ability to put a new (and believable) twist on the classic character. Expectations may be low going into any new version but the most surprising aspect of NBC’s take on Dracula is that it’s actually very good.
Opening in 1881 Romania, two explorers awaken Dracula (Jonathan Rhys Myers) in a perfectly bloody manner and by the time 1896 rolls around Dracula is living in London and has reinvented himself as the rich, devastatingly handsome, brutally smart American inventor Alexander Grayson, who in the pilot brashly introduces a free, wireless power source that threatens to put England’s rich oil suppliers out of business.

As King Henry VIII in Showtime's "The Tudors," Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers took on an English king with a taste for fancy dress, pretty women, power, and lopping the heads off unfaithful wives and indiscreet or uncooperative courtiers.
Friday, Oct. 25, on NBC, Rhys Meyers tackles another iconic character, an Eastern European king-turned-vampire with a taste for understated dress, pretty women (with and without bloodletting), power, and taking down rivals as rich and powerful as himself.
From the producers of PBS' "Downton Abbey," "Dracula" returns Irish author Bram Stoker's creation -- adapted in ways ranging from the sexy to the comic and from the past to present day -- to his native 19th century. Having been revived from a desiccated imprisonment by a fresh infusion of blood - from a surprising source, for those who know the original story - the former Vlad the Impaler assumes the guise of American entrepreneur Alexander Grayson.
