Not a lot to say in the pre-amble to this week’s selection of titles. Should probably apologise for the negativity in advance because a lot of the below is dreck this week across any content provider apart from the occasional bright spot and a new Netflix exclusive. Hopefully you will be able to at least find something worth a look that floats your boat.
This week’s titles of note are as follows:
Gravity (2013)
There really isn’t anymore praise that I can heap on Alfonso Cuaron’s outer space thrill ride that hasn’t been heaped upon it already. Upon repeat viewing what impresses more and more is the technical marvel that this film represents with Gravity being a massive leap forward in the use of virtual sets as well as animation that looks like real people.
There are apparently whole entire scenes here featuring Sandra Bullock and...

With a baffling backstory about the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, this new jungle animation does not go with a swing
Here's a muddled and dull new family film about Tarzan, who in keeping with tradition is as clean-shaven and all-over hairless as any male stripper. It's basically an "origin" myth about the king of the apes, although the precise origin of that loincloth is as big a mystery as ever. Walt Disney's ownership of the copyright having expired, the German firm Constantin Films opened its chequebook and cranked out this English-language Disney knock-off: a very moderate motion-capture animation, stripping the tale of any wit and burdening it with a pointless and baffling sci-fi backstory about the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. The writer-director is veteran German producer Reinhard Klooss; Kellan Lutz voices Tarzan and Spencer Locke is Jane. The idea is thatTarzan's jungle is the secret location of the...

While the film world fervently awaits the live-action adaptation of Tarzan, set for a 2016 release, in the meantime comes yet another reimagining of the classic tale, with director Reinhard Klooss marking the fictional creation’s centenary year with an animated offering. While certainly enjoyable, it lacks any true individuality, causing us to sincerely hope that David Yates’ impending endeavour shows a little more ingenuity.
Kellan Lutz, renowned primarily for his performance as Emmett Cullen in the Twilight franchise, voices the eponymous lead, who is left abandoned in the jungle when victim of a helicopter crash as a child, which killed both of his parents. He was then raised in the wild by gorillas, adapting their mannerisms and culture. Years later, now one of the most agile creatures in the jungle, he makes human contact for the first time – with the adventurer Jane Porter (Spencer Locke), as the pair come up...

★★★☆☆With 2014 marking the 100th anniversary of author Edgar Rice Burroughs' most famous creation, Tarzan the Ape Man, it seemed inevitable that someone would make a new film for the character. The 19th time the story has appeared on the big screen, Reinhard Klooss' Tarzan (2013) begins with an accident in which the parents of young J.J. (Craig Garner) - heir to the Greystoke Energies business empire - are killed in the African jungle, leaving the boy alone in the wild. Found and taken care of by a female gorilla and her band, J.J. grows to become the man known only as Tarzan (Kellan Lutz). Years later, Jane Porter (Spencer Locke) meets Tarzan when travelling in the jungle with her father, an employee of Greystoke.

Despite the seismic critical and commercial failure of Disney's John Carter, Hollywood hasn't been deterred from diving back into the Edgar Rice Burroughs literary archives for feature film material. Tarzan, an animated adventure arriving ahead of Warner Bros's Alexander Skarsgård-led blockbuster, will hope to fare better than the Mars-marooned Civil War veteran did in 2012.
Heroes are in vogue on the big screen right now, whether they're clad in superhero spandex or a loincloth - and Tarzan certainly has a sturdier cinematic history than John Carter, even if he did have to suffer through Phil Collins's caterwauling.
Fortunately this German-produced take on the story doesn't have the ex-Genesis man to contend with, but it does suffer from a thrifty corner-cutting...

Kellan Lutz ‘The Legend of Hercules’: New Summit release has 0% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating (photo: Gaia Weiss and shirtless Kellan Lutz in ‘The Legend of Hercules’) Starring Kellan Lutz, best known as the hunky and likable vampire Emmett in the Twilight movies, The Legend of Hercules opens today, January 10, 2014, in North America. That’s the good news for Kellan Lutz fans. Now, the bad news: The Legend of Hercules isn’t about to become the next Spartacus — or even the next Gladiator. “The only thing epic about The Legend of Hercules is what a failure it is,” writes Stephanie Merry in the Washington Post, while Newsday‘s Rafer Guzman’s complains that “this painfully feeble version of the strongman story fails on every level, from Lutz’s wooden acting to the styrofoam special effects.” In fact, out of 35 reviews, the Summit Entertainment / Lionsgate Pictures release has a 0% approval rating...

It was over a year ago that we saw the first posters for the latest incarnation of Tarzan. This time we get to see a film both in 3D and shot completely using motion capture (the same effect that was achieved to create films like Avatar).
The latest iteration of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic story will be arriving on the big screen next summer, this time under the direction of Reinhard Klooss (Animals United). Kellan Lutz (Twilight, Immortals) leads the motion-capture cast, alongside Spencer Locke (Resident Evil: Afterlife) as Jane, and Jaime Ray Newman (A Town Called Eureka), Robert Capron (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Mark Deklin (Gcb), and Trevor St. John (One Life to Live).
Klooss is directing from a script he co-wrote with Jessica Postigo (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) and Yoni Brenner (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs).

Tarzan is back (what, you’ve been waiting for him, right?) in director Reinhard Klooss’ CGI animated movie “Tarzan”. Kellan Lutz, who will be battling Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for the title of best Hercules in 2014, fronts the film as the voice of Tarzan, though from the looks of it — er, the sounds of it — he mostly just grunts and roars. Which makes sense. Isn’t Lutz’s best assets his muscles? You don’t actually get to see those muscles in an animated movie, so it’s probably best to limit his dialogue. Just sayin’. Guy isn’t exactly De Niro, you know? Anyways, take a look at the first trailer for “Tarzan”, not to be confused with the live-action movie that’s been in the works for a few years now. Tarzan and Jane Porter face a mercenary army dispatched by the evil CEO of Greystoke Energies, a...

We've got a new full trailer for the 3D animated retelling of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic jungle tale, Tarzan. The movie was directed by Reinhard Klooss for Constantin Film, and unfortunately, it doesn't really look that good at all. The CG animation is pretty cheap looking. Video games are far superior to the stuff we are seeing in this trailer.
Tarzan 3D was adapted for the screen by Jessica Postigo (The Mortal Instruments) and Yoni Brenner (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs), and stars Kellan Lutz (Twilight) as Tarzan and Spencer Locke (Resident Evil: Afterlife) as Jane.
There's no word on when the movie is being released. I won't be seeing it when it comes out, anyway.

Last fall, we got an early look at Constantin Films motion-capture animated adaptation of Tarzan 3D, featuring The Twilight Saga star Kellan Lutz as the title man of the jungle and Spencer Locke (Detention) playing Jane. At the time, the animation looked like an old video game, lacking all of the features that make animated movies today look good. Now the full trailer is here, and even though it's been a year since that initial teaser popped up, this film still looks like garbage. The film is already playing in German and Russian cinemas, so it's not going to get better. Don't count on this getting a big Us release. While Warner Bros.’ take on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ vine-swinging hero Tarzan isn’t so much soaring through the jungle as crawling through elephant dung along the ground, Constantin Films’ animated version is already at the trailer stage. Take a look at the first full promo. Kellan Lutz, Spencer Locke, Mark Delkin, Jaime Ray Newman and Brian Bloom are among those who have been performance captured and had their voices recorded for this new 3D ‘toon, with Reinhard Klooss in the director’s chair. The plot doesn’t so much take liberties with the Tarzan story as brazenly heist a blend of Avatar, FernGully, Pocahontas and more and add it to the essential narrative of the boy raised by apes. James Cameron in particular will notice similarities to the antagonists’ plan to mine a mountain of precious fuel material that resulted from the crash of a meteorite eons ago.Our hero...

This ain't your father's Tarzan. Unlike the Disney version, Constantin Film and Ambient Entertainment bring a fresh, modern spin on Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan of the Apes in Reinhard Klooss's 3D animated film Tarzan with Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga) providing the voice and motion-capture performance for the jungle hero. Also in the cast is Spencer Locke (Resident Evil films) as Jane Porter and Trevor St. John as William Clayton, the CEO of Greystoke Energies who sends a mercenary army to eliminate Tarzan and Jane. While in a remote part of Africa exploring a mineral cache in a mysterious cave, entrepreneur John Greystoke and his wife Alice are killed in a tragic helicopter crash, leaving their three-year-old John, Jr. to fend for himself. Update: Alexander Skargard (Battleship) appears to be the top choice to play the title character in Warner Brothers Tarzan. David Yates, the director of four of the Harry Potter movies, is helming the post-jungle Tarzan story, replacing Craig Brewer. WB's Tarzan reboot follows the jungle man years after he's joined society and now goes by the name John Clayton III. Queen Victoria asks him to go back to the Congo to investigate what's going on - and there he teams up with an ex-mercenary to save the land from a diamond warlord.
Additionally, Samuel L. Jackson is in talks to play an undisclosed supporting role.
This is different from the Summit project which is staying true to the original Edgar Rice Burroughs story -- except that it's in motion capture and 3D (see below).

Last week we saw the first teaser trailer arrive for the motion-capture animated 3D film, Tarzan, and now it’s swiftly followed by our first look at the international teaser poster.
Klooss is directing from a script he co-wrote with Jessica Postigo (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) and Yoni Brenner (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs)

As of this summer, there was still a considerable interest in Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ mostly hairless ape. Writer Adam Cozad revealed some heavy interest from directors for his take, Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer was planning a trip of his own to the jungle and Kellan Lutz had signed up for a motion capture version called Tarzan 3D from German director Reinhard Klooss. Because the world has a sense of humor, it’s the last one there that got made and has a trailer out. To be blunt, the CGI involved is rudimentary, but there’s something pleasing about seeing how far the world of low-rent mo-cap has come. It’s still far behind the technology curve, but that’s to be expected from a small outlet. At the very least, it’s the kind of thing that – even if you laugh at it – you can still find encouraging in a small way. Unfortunately...

Here's the first trailer for director Reinhard Klooss' 3D mo-cap retelling of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic jungle tale Tarzan. I totally forgot all about this project which has yet to find a U.S. distributor. The film is slated to open next summer in international markets.
As Blastr points out, the effects on this thing look waaay dated. It seems they tried to strike a balance between kiddie animation and photo-realistic CGI. I feel Steven Spielberg struck the right balance between the two for Tintin, but Tarzan doesn't quite stack up. It just looks cheap. I'll have to wait for another trailer to see if they actually look to have a good take on the story.

Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga) as Tarzan and Spencer Locke (Resident Evil) as Jane are featured in a trailer for Constantin Film’s motion-capture 3D animated family flick Tarzan.
Directed by Reinhard Klooss from a script he co-wrote with Jessica Postigo (The Mortal Instruments) and Yoni Brenner (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs), the film is slated to hit theaters in Germany next summer.
This 3D project looks like it belongs in a video game instead of movies and due to a worrisome article about German filmmakers sounds like typical German radical Greens wanting to hijack Tarzan for political propaganda.

Back towards the beginning of the summer we learned of a new Tarzan film that would use motion-capture animation to bring the jungle man to life. Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga) was taking the lead role with Spencer Locke (Detention) playing Jane. Yeah, it didn't sound too promising, but now we have the first trailer for the 3D project, and it's definitely lacking. We're not sure how long the project was in production, but this animation looks like it's about 10 years behind schedule. It's not completely terrible, but knowing what motion-capture technology is capable of, this looks like it belongs in a video game instead of movie. Here's the first trailer for Reinhard Klooss' Tarzan 3D from Animatie (via The Playlist): Also, if you're interested, there's a behind the scenes video of the making of Tarzan 3D: Reinhard Klooss is directing Tarzan 3D starring Kellan Lutz as the...

Remember this spring when it was announced that Kellan Lutz and Spencer Locke were going to be Tarzan and Jane in "Tarzan 3D"? Yeah, we barely do either. But apparently production moved ahead and this thing is for real, as a trailer has dropped, but it'll make you wonder why they're bothering in the first place. For some reason, this was a mo-cap production, but the end result judging by this trailer, is animation that looks like it would've been cutting edge about a decade ago. At best, it's like a really well done cut scene from a videogame. At best. We suppose one has to admire Lutz's dedication to craft and paychecks for going through with this, and if it does turn out to be an embarrassment, it's not like his actual face is in this thing. As for Jane, we don't see her yet in this first trailer,...

Actors Kellan Lutz ("Twilight") and Spencer Locke ("Resident Evil") will play the characters 'Tarzan' and 'Jane', based on author Edgar Rice Burrough's book "Tarzan", in Constantin Films' upcoming performance capture movie "Tarzan 3D", to be directed by Reinhard Klooss and Holger Tappe.
In the new adaptation, Jane is reportedly the daughter of an African guide, committed to the conservation and preservation of the African jungle.
She eventually teams up with Tarzan to defeat the mercenary army of 'Greystoke Energies'.
Tarzan, as first written by Burrough's for a magazine publication in 1912, is regarded as the archetypal feral child raised in the African jungles by the 'Mangani great apes'.
The character's adventures were first published in book form in 1914, followed by twenty-five sequels, three authorized books by other authors, and innumerable works in other media.

Kellan Lutz (photo), best known for playing Emmett Cullen in the Twilight movies, and Resident Evil actress Spencer Locke, will star in the performance-capture 3D movie Tarzan, adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic tale, and to be directed by Animals United’s producers / directors Reinhard Klooss and Holger Tappe. Needless to say, Lutz will bring Tarzan back to life, while Locke will play Jane. The screenplay was written by Klooss, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs‘ Yoni Brenner and Jessica Postigo, whose sole listed credit on the IMDb is Harald Zwart’s The Mortal Instruments, currently in pre-production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it updates Burroughs’ story by having Tarzan’s parents killed in a plane crash, the CEO of Greystoke Energies as the film’s chief villain, and Jane as an environmentally conscious heroine. Come to think of it, the first "update" isn’t something really new: Boy’s...

Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic novel Tarzan is getting yet another big screen adaptation. This time it will be a CG animated 3D film shot using motion capture technology. It doesn't sound like this project is the same one that Footloose Craig Brewer was attached to direct last year. This seems like a completely new project that popped up out of nowhere.
The movie will star Kellan Lutz (Twilight) as Tarzan, and Spencer Locke (Resident Evil) will be taking on the role of Jane Porter. Reinhard Klooss will direct the film from a script that he wrote along with Yoni Brenner and Jessica Postigo.
According to THR the script is a larger update of Burroughs' classic jungle character. For example, "Tarzan’s parents, billionaire adventurers, are now killed in airplane crash rather than being marooned with their child. And the movie’s villain is the CEO of Greystoke Energies, a...

Last summer we learned that Footloose remake and Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer was looking at a possible Tarzan trilogy at Warner Bros, but the studio was also looking at a competing project. However, In August of 2010, Constantin Films had already announced development of a new animated Tarzan film which would be taking more cues from Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan novels, the first of which, Tarzan of the Apes, was published in 1912. Now that project finally has some new development as Heat Vision reports Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga) and Spencer Locke (Detention) will play Tarzan and Jane. More below! In addition, rather than just being an animated film, it will actually be a 3D motion capture production. A 3D Tarzan movie is now moving forward and looking likely to begin filming later this year. Casting decisions have been made on the movie's two big parts, that of the jungle wildman Tarzan and his beautiful civilized consort Jane.
Twilight franchise star Kellen Lutz has won the part of Tarzan while Spencer Locke (who played K-Mart in several Resident Evil films) will play Jane Porter.
Constantin Films is producing this new Tarzan movie, and in addition to filming it in 3D they'll also be using another new technology: performance capture. This kind of technique was most recently seen used in Steven Spielberg's Tintin movie.
The script does offer a new contemporary take on Edgar Rice Burroughs' story. Whereas Burroughs original tale was set at the end of the 19th century, the Constantin Tarzan film is set modern day. The villain is the CEO of Greystoke Energies, a...
