Superpower review, Berlin Film Festival: Sean Penn’s Zelensky documentary is heartfelt and inspiring
Dotted throughout Sean Penn’s new film Superpower (which he co-directed with Aaron Kaufman) are shots in which the Hollywood star turned political activist is shown sitting in his Santa Monica home, talking earnestly into camera. He is reflecting on what he has witnessed during his various trips to Ukraine since late 2021. He has a respect, verging on awe, for President Volodymyr Zelensky’s wartime leadership after the Russia invasion of the country last year.
That’s not how Penn felt about Zelensky when he arrived in Kyiv in late 2021. The first half of the feature documentary (which has been provoking a frenzy at the Berlin Film Festival this weekend) is riveting and often surprising. Penn and Kaufman originally set out to make an irreverent portrait of Zelensky and to find out more about this Chaplinesque figure who has somehow been catapulted to power. Many of the Ukrainians they meet...

Last November, in a gesture that the actor himself described as “a symbolic, silly thing,” Sean Penn gifted one of his two Academy Awards to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to mark his emotional investment in the country as they continue to fight Russia’s invasion — attracting widespread mockery from social media and the entertainment press in the process. That this moment is not included in Penn and co-director Aaron Kaufman’s “Superpower,” a disordered, distinctly Penn-centric account of recent Ukrainian history, counts as one of the film’s few moments of self-awareness. As far as the rest goes, anyone watching this doc right after emerging from a two-year coma could be forgiven for identifying the Hollywood veteran as a key player in the conflict.
The sincerity of Penn’s interest in, and concern for, Ukraine is not in doubt. Having begun shooting on the ground in 2021, some months before war...

The Heroes star opened up about relinquishing custody of Kaya during Wednesday’s (28 September) episode of Red Table Talk hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, her mother Adrienne Banfield Norris, and guest host Kelly Osbourne.
In 2018, Kaya, who was born in 2014, went to live with her boxer father in Eastern Europe as Panettiere sought treatment for her addiction to alcohol and pills. Panettiere and Klitschko split that same year.

French writer-director Elie Grappe’s debut feature, “Olga,” co-written with Raphaëlle Desplechin, uses a unique lens to examine the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution, the protests that rocked Kyiv and sent President Victor Yanukovych into exile.
The “Revolution of Dignity” was a powerful statement of nationality by the Ukrainian people, and while they ousted their corrupt Putin-crony president, the protests also sparked the invasion of Crimea and the Donbas by Russia, and continue to linger politically as the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine this year has shocked the globe.
With almost surgical precision, Grappe’s film poses the question, “Are sports political?” through the point of view of a Ukrainian teenage gymnast who must flee to Switzerland in order to continue her training.

Hayden Panettiere may not seem like the most likely ally for the protesters in the Ukraine, but she actually has a personal stake in the country's future and well-being. The Nashville actress' fiance, Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko, is the brother of an opposition leader, Vitali Klitschko, and both she and her husband-to-be have been lending their voices to the demonstrations in Ukraine's capital of Kiev. Hayden Panettiere is a lover, not a fighter. Wladimir Klitschko, however, happens to be both. The Ukrainian-born boxer defended his Wba, Ibf and Wbo heavyweight titles when he challenged Italian-born Francesco Pianeta in Mannheim, Germany, on May 4. The fight marked the 60th win and 52nd knockout for Wladimir, who began boxing in the early '90s. Panettiere cheered for her fiance with Natalia Klitschko, Wladimir's sister-in-law and wife of fellow boxer Vitali Klitschko. One fight is for publicity, the other is for multiple World Championships. One is being fought by Klitschko losers, the other by the 140lb division’s best fighters. So why do I, and many others, want to see Haye vs Chisora more than Khan vs Garcia?
The answer is actually fairly simple. People hate David Haye and/or Dereck Chisora; they want to see what will happen this time around in the circus show, and in the ring, a knockout.
Haye Vs Chisora
Before the embarrassing brawl after Chisora’s quite impressive performance (not manner) against the ageing Vitali Klitschko, this fight was a laughable option for David Haye. Haye is a two weight world champion fighter, Chisora is a nobody. This is a fight for money, public demand and personal hatred. I cannot wait!
Many were criticising this fight for taking place, especially in England having been sanctioned from Luxembourg.

Former world heavyweight boxing champion David Haye feared he would be gunned down after his headline-grabbing brawl with fellow fighter Dereck Chisora in Munich, Germany on Saturday, causing him to flee the country.
The pair clashed at a press conference following Chisora's bout with Vitali Klitschko in Munich, trading bare-knuckle blows in sickening scenes broadcast around the world.
Police quizzed Chisora following the incident and he has been released without charge - but retired boxer Haye, who was working as a TV pundit covering the boxing match, returned to the U.K. and is now wanted for questioning in Germany.
Haye broke his silence on Monday afternoon and released a statement about the bust-up, in which he blamed Chisora for starting the altercation and claimed that his life had been threatened.
Describing the aftermath of the brawl, Haye says, "It was then that I heard Chisora say he planned to 'shoot me dead'. I decided to leave the venue and return to my hotel, a move which I hoped would diffuse the situation...
"Consequently, I left Munich on an earlier flight on Sunday morning and have been thinking about what happened ever since... It goes without saying, I am bitterly disappointed to have been a part of what transpired on Saturday evening."
But Haye has stopped short of apologising for his behaviour - he insists he is "no angel" but declares that he has "never been involved in, or even witnessed, such a serious fracas".
And he's willing to help sporting officials get to the bottom of the matter, adding: "I shall happily assist the boxing authorities with any investigation they wish to launch..."
Meanwhile, Chisora has also released a statement, admitting he is "deeply embarrassed" by the turn of events.
Boxing officials in Germany have called for Haye and Chisora to be banned from the sport for life over the brawl.

Dereck Chisora has threatened to shoot retired former Wba Heavyweight Champion boxer David Haye after the two Brits were involved in a brawl at the post-match news conference following Chisora’s defeat to Wbc Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko last night in Munich.

Nowadays it seems like a given that almost every hit musical will eventually get turned into a movie, and increasingly we've been finding that the reverse is also true: a lot of popular movies are being turned into musicals. Everything from The Evil Dead to The Toxic Avenger to Spider-Man have recently received stage adaptations, partially in an attempt to woo genre fans and other folks who wouldn't normally be interested in musicals. Now it appears that one of the manliest franchises of all time is finally about to get turned into a musical: the tale of the Italian Stallion himself, Rocky Balboa. Yes, it's true, Rocky: The Musical is set to open next year in Germany, and Sylvester Stallone is even involved as a co-producer. Who's in? With Sylvester Stallone currently spending most of his time on "The Expendables 2," it looks like Rocky Balboa might have finally hung up his gloves on the big-screen, after the sixth entry in the series a few years back. But the blue-collar boxer is finding a new string to his bow: showtunes. Stallone and title-winning siblings and actual fighters Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko are joining forces to finally bring “Rocky” to the Broadway stage, where it was... always... meant... to be. It’s hard to remember that Stallone wrote the thing, and is an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and actor.
