After safely and successfully filming its most recent season last year in Portland, Ore., “Top Chef,” Bravo’s Emmy-winning culinary competition, has moved to Houston for Season 19. Production has begun there, and the show will premiere next year.
Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons are all returning to adjudicate the new group of cheftestants. Also coming back will be a variation of last season’s “Top Chef” all-star judging panel, in which alumni of the show joined its bubble as guest judges and mentors. The idea was born out of pre-covid vaccine necessity, but proved to be popular with the show’s fans. Tiffany Derry, Hung Huynh, Stephanie Izard, Melissa King, Kristen Kish, Kwame Onwuachi, Sam Talbot, Brooke Williamson and Claudette Zepeda are among the alumni who will appear on “Top Chef’s” 19th season, with more names to be announced later.

“Top Chef” Season 18 has placed its chef’s hat on a winner: Congratulations to Gabe Erales!
The victor of the 18th season of Bravo’s cooking competition, which took place in Portland, Oregon, amid the pandemic, was announced on Thursday’s finale episode. The installment featured a three-way showdown between “Top Chef: Portland” finalists Dawn Burrell, Gabe Erales and Shota Nakajima, who each prepared an epic spread for the judges and some special guests at Willamette Valley Vineyards.
After 13 grueling episodes of competition, which whittled down the Season 18 contestants from a group of 15 to this trio, Dawn, Gabe and Shota were given the assignment to serve up the best four-course meal of their lives for their final challenge.
The meals were served to “Top Chef” host Padma Lakshmi, head judge Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons, along with this season’s All-Star dining panel, and a few additional noteworthy guests, including Tiffany Derry,...

“Top Chef” Season 18 premieres Thursday, introducing fans to the 15 chefs who will be competing for the title in Portland during this installment. The supersized kickoff to the season will also give viewers an understanding of what changes had to be made in order to film this pandemic-produced “Top Chef.”
And one of the first things “Top Chef” obsessives will probably be wondering about — once they see the accommodations in the first episode — is how fan-favorite challenge Restaurant Wars is going to look when it comes around later this season. After all, Covid-19 has made running established restaurants almost impossible, so how would “Top Chef” contestants manage to safely throw together and run the pop-ups that are a staple of that particular competition?
Luckily, TheWrap has the answer.

Dr. Tiffany Moon, the first Asian American cast member on “The Real Housewives of Dallas,” is talking candidly about the surge in violence against Asians and Pacific Islanders, and specifically Asian women.
According to the reporting forum Stop Aapi Hate, 3,800 incidents of anti-Asian hate were reported between March 2020 and February 2021, with women reporting twice as many incidents as men. Those figures were released just before the mass shooting at Asian massage parlors in the Atlanta area that left eight people dead, six of them Asian women, earlier this month.
“It really broke my heart because as a female minority, there is already so much that we have to deal with, and now these poor innocent women who were just working got murdered,” Moon told TheWrap’s deputy editor, Lawrence Yee.
“If you take Asian out of it, I think women in general — minority women, especially — are vulnerable and more likely...

Earlier this week Bravo announced that reality heavyweight “Top Chef” had started production on its 18th season in Portland, Oregon— it’s just the latest culinary competition to head back to work since “The Great British Bake Off” returned last week on Netflix.
It’s difficult to imagine that nearly 15 years has passed since Bravo first introduced the world to its merry band of cheftestants and a culinary competition that would take the world by storm. It changed the tide of reality TV, from a genre that perpetuated tawdy shock-and-awe spectacles to one that allowed for storybuilding and empathetic characters.
But empires aren’t built overnight and “Top Chef” was no different, not adding signature host Padma Lakshmi, with her warmth, withering looks, and witty repartee until Season 2 and continuing to fine-tune the series long after that.

As the national conversation changed dramatically in the past four years, centering the importance of amplifying underrepresented voices and cultures, it altered the context of pop culture, as well. Many unscripted programs rose to the challenge by continuously casting more inclusively — whether it be a particular season’s contestants, episode-specific subjects or series-long hosts. Through these players, the shows are able to shine an international spotlight on the immigrant experience, racial divides, prejudices and concerns of the Lgbtqia+ community.
“From the beginning it was of the utmost importance to us to show the diversity within this country and in small towns,” says Johnnie Ingram, executive producer of HBO’s “We’re Here.”

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a surge in racism against Asians and Pacific Islander (Api) which has been bolstered by Donald Trump and his administration’s consistent use of the terms “Chinese virus” and “Kung Flu” to describe Covid-19.
