For TV critics, this week’s theme is less-buzzy new versions of some of the buzziest shows of the past year. It will be a fun game to see how many reviews discuss Peacock’s The Resort without mentioning HBO’s The White Lotus in the first paragraph (when the more apt comparison is actually Apple TV+’s Acapulco) or Amazon’s Paper Girls without mentioning Netflix’s Stranger Things (when the more apt comparison is actually Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club).
The answer may be close to “zero.” (I won’t even try when it comes to Paper Girls.)
I have at least successfully avoided mentioning Showtime’s Yellowjackets until several sentences into my review of Netflix’s Keep Breathing, a so-called limited series that is unquestionably most easily described as a one-woman version of Yellowjackets without any of the sensationalistic — or “fun,...

There's no doubt that consumers of entertainment have a thing about plane crashes.
The idea that one minute, you're on a journey of a lifetime to the next, scrambling to survive, makes for excellent drama and character introspection.
Keep Breathing hopes to combine a survival drama with the introspection that comes when your life almost passes you by in the blink of an eye.
In the vein of Tom Hanks' Castaway comes Keep Breathing, the story of Liv (Melissa Barrera), a woman who pursues her career at the expense of everything else in her life.
Liv's fateful day arrives as she's leading one of the most important projects of her life.
She rallies her team with a determined bark. Nobody will stop until they've got what they need.
She puts her words into action when her infirmed father falls ill and is hospitalized. Although she's urged to take the time to visit him,...

Peacock has quite the treat for us this summer.
The streaming service has announced that its highly-anticipated new drama series Dr. Death will be available to stream Thursday, July 15.
Based on Wondery’s hit podcast, Dr. Death is inspired by the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson), a rising star in the Dallas medical community.
Young, charismatic, and ostensibly brilliant, Dr. Duntsch was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice when everything suddenly changed.
Patients entered his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries and left permanently maimed or dead.
As victims piled up, two fellow physicians, neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb), set out to stop him.
The series explores the twisted mind of Dr. Duntsch and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenseless among us.
It explores the ‘why’ behind Dr.

The CW’s pilot of “Powerpuff,” the live-action series based on the popular Cartoon Network animated show “The Powerpuff Girls,” is being overhauled and re-shot because the initial pilot was “too campy” and not as rooted in reality as network execs would have liked. The CW also offered an update on the fate of “The 100” prequel on a press briefing Tuesday on the network’s fall schedule
“The reason you do pilots is because sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss,” said The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz about “Powerpuff.” “We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers. We believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner [Bros. TV] studios.”
“In this case the pilot didn’t work,” he said. “But because we see there’s enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. So that’s why...

While some new titles are set to premiere on The CW as part of its 2021-2022 fall slate, the anticipated Powerpuff live-action reboot did not make the cut and will be reworked and repiloted. The CW’s Mark Pedowitz expanded on the decision, noting that holding the series back will provide an opportunity to do right by it.
“The reason we do pilots is sometimes things miss, this was just a miss,” he said during The CW’s upfront press call on Tuesday. “We believe in the cast completely, we believe in Diablo and Heather, the writers… in this case, the pilot didn’t work.”

The first trailer for Peacock’s “Dr. Death” is here, featuring Joshua Jackson as “either the most incompetent surgeon… or a sociopath.”
The limited series is based on Wondery’s hit podcast of the same name and tells the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, a charismatic Dallas surgeon with a flourishing neurosurgery practice — and a growing list of patients who come in for routine spinal surgeries and leave permanently maimed or dead.
As the bodies under Duntsch’s care pile up, fellow surgeons Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb), set out to stop him. According to the series logline, “‘Dr. Death’ explores the twisted mind of Dr. Duntsch and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenseless among us.”
“Duntsch is never going to stop on his own,” Baldwin’s Henderson says at one point in the trailer.

Written by Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier and directed by Maggie Kiley based on the original Cartoon Network animated series created by Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls follows the trio, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, who used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crimefighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?
Bennet will portray Blossom Utonium. Though she was a spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child who holds several advanced degrees, Blossom’s repressed kiddie-superhero trauma has left her feeling anxious and reclusive, and she aims to become a leader again — this time on her own terms.
Cameron will play Bubbles Utonium.

The live-action “Powerpuff Girls” pilot at The CW has found its three leads, with Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault all joining the show.
The “Powerpuff Girls” live-action series was first announced as being in development back in August. Based on the Cartoon Network series created by Craig McCracken, the new series sees the pint-sized superheroes as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?
Bennet has been cast as Blossom, Cameron has been cast as Bubbles, and Perrault has been cast as Buttercup. The pilot reunites Bennet and Camerson, though this time they will play allies instead of enemies. Both previously appeared in the ABC-Marvel series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” in which Bennet’s character and Cameron’s fought against each other.

Exclusive: Hubert Point-Du Jour (The Good Lord Bird) and Maryann Plunkett (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) have joined the cast of Peacock’s limited series Dr. Death, starring Joshua Jackson, Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater, from Ucp.
Written by Patrick Macmanus, who serves as showrunner, Dr. Death is based on the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Jackson), a rising star in the Dallas medical community. Young, charismatic and ostensibly brilliant, Duntsch was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice when everything suddenly changed. Patients entered his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries and left permanently maimed or dead. As victims piled up, two fellow physicians — neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Slater) — set out to stop him. Dr. Death explores Duntsch’s twisted mind and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenseless among us.

Joshua Jackson has been tapped for the title role in Peacock’s Dr. Death. He will star opposite Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater in the Ucp-produced limited series based on the hit Wondery podcast of the same name.
Jackson replaces Jamie Dornan, who was cast in the role in August 2019. Due to Dr. Death‘s production start delay relating to the coronavirus pandemic, Dornan’s schedule no longer allows him to do the series, leading to his departure. For the same reason, Stephen Frears recently exited as director of the first two episodes. He was replaced by Maggie Kiley, who leads an all-female directing team on the show.
Production on Dr. Death begins this fall.
