The premise of David X. Cohen and Matt Groening's "Futurama" is pretty simple. On New Year's Eve in the year 1999, a feckless and directionless pizza delivery boy named Fry (Billy West) accidentally falls into a cryogenic freezing tube and remains suspended for a thousand years. He awakens just as the world rings in the year 3000, and eventually takes a job working for a distant nephew named Professor Farnsworth (West), who owns a space-bound delivery company of his own. He also develops a crush on an impatient cyclops named Leela (Katey Sagal). The world of the year 3000 is replete with sci-fi trappings familiar to any fan of the genre; there are robots, aliens, space travel, and ineffable technologies.
The central joke of "Futurama" is that, despite all of humanity's advancements, human beings are still dumb and petty and concerned with their selfish creature comforts and base impulses. Fry may have been whisked into the future,...

Although "Futurama" is filled with some of the best science and math jokes in animated comedy, it is still very much a show where humor trumps realism. "Futurama" expects its audience to understand the time travel rule that accidentally killing a young version of your grandfather will create a paradox, only to resolve the paradox with the nonsensical (but very funny) punchline of Fry accidentally becoming his grandfather, which doesn't quite make sense from a genetic point of view. It similarly expects its audience to understand how compound interest works for a joke about Fry's 93 cents in 1999 turning into $4.3 billion in 2999, yet conveniently sidesteps any questions about inflation.
This all comes down to a central rule in the show's writers' room, one that was apparently written on a whiteboard: "Science Shall Not Overrule Comedy." As co-creator David X. Cohen explained in a 2013 interview, "We wanted as much as possible to...

Bender Bending Rodrigeuz (John Dimaggio) is the most irreverent "Futurama" character by far, which makes the 2002 episode "Godfellas" such a compelling character piece.
At the episode's beginning, Bender is taking a nap in the Planet Express Ship's torpedo tube; during a battle with Space Pirates, he's shot into the void at light speed. Drifting through the cosmos alone, he's eventually hit by an asteroid home to diminutive "Shrimpkins." The aliens settle on his body and worship him as a god — he tries both an interventionist and abstaining approach to helping his subjects, but neither works. Soon, the faithful and atheistic Shrimpkins wipe each other out in a nuclear war.
Bender, alone again, comes across an omnipotent spiral nebula that communicates in binary code — Bender speculates this eternal entity may be God himself. They exchange notes on Godhood ("You [Bender] were doing well until everyone died") before "God" sends Bender back to...

In the "Futurama" episode "The Prisoner of Benda," Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) invents a body-swapping device that trades the consciousnesses of two users. He, being a very, very old man, would like to occupy the youthful, more active body of his employee, Amy Wong (Lauren Tom). Amy, meanwhile, longs to overeat as she once did as a child, and the Professor's bony body would allow her to indulge in her appetite. They swap bodies, but only after doing so realize that the machine doesn't allow them to swap back. A third body would allow Amy to return to her body, but then the Professor and the third party would be swapped. It was all very complicated.
Eventually, Fry (West) and Leela (Katey Sagal) are having romantic dates in the bodies of Dr. Zoidberg (West) and the Professor, and the Professor is performing in an Eastern European circus in Bender's body.

In the "Futurama" movie "Bender's Big Score," a visit to a nude beach planet revealed that Philip Fry (Billy West) had a tattoo on his butt -- a tattoo of his robot friend Bender smoking a cigar -- that he didn't know had been placed there. A closer examination of the butt tattoo revealed a miniature binary code embedded in one of the portrait's eyes. It seemed that this was a thought-to-be-mythic time-travel code that, when read aloud, manifested a portal to the past. The Professor (West) noted that time travel was dangerous as it couldn't be achieved without creating universe-threatening paradoxes.
Unluckily, Bender himself (John Dimaggio) had been infected with a computer virus, placing him in the control of a trio of nudist internet scam aliens. The aliens ordered Bender to go back in time to steal Earth's artifacts. Bender, being a robot, could wait in a basement for...

The eighth episode of the latest season of "Futurama" was called "Zapp Gets Canceled," and it finally put the show's most horrendous, inappropriate, and lascivious character, Zapp Brannigan (Billy West), on trial for his life of horrible behavior. He is emblazoned with a bright red "C" (for "canceled") and forced to attend a sensitivity training workshop. Zapp, as thick as two planks, doesn't quite absorb the training, feeling that his arrogant, crass, offensive, racist, misogynistic behavior is perfectly acceptable. Because "Futurama" is a pretty cynical show, Zapp is ultimately proven right. His brashness eventually proves to be useful in a crisis situation, and he is reinstated, un-canceled after all. I suppose the un-canceling of Zapp Brannigan is appropriate, coming from a show that, itself, has been un-canceled several times over.

When Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's animated sci-fi sitcom "Futurama" was still in the earliest days of its development, voice actor Billy West was shown drawings of the characters he might be playing on the show. When he was shown a picture of Dr. Zoidberg, the impoverished lobster physician at Planet Express, West figured the arthropod's voice would sound muffled and jowly due to the tendrils of meat hanging off his face. West reached deep into his mental vault of celebrities he could imitate and came out with two obscurities: Dr. Zoidberg was a combination of George Jessel — a Vaudeville comedian and longtime Toastmaster of Ceremonies at multiple political gatherings in the '40s and '50s — and Canadian actor Lou Jacobi from "Irma la Douce" and "Arthur."

“Futurama” is coming back in the very near future.
Season 11 of the beloved Emmy-winning adult animated series debuts on Hulu after 10 years off the air. “Futurama” premiered in 1999 and was later canceled in 2003. The show later returned in four TV movies from 2008 to 2009, which were split into episodes and count as individual seasons. Comedy Central revived the show in 2010 before it was canceled in 2013.
After a brief 10-year hiatus, “Futurama” has crawled triumphantly from the cryogenic tube, its full original cast and satirical spirit intact. The 10 all-new episodes of Season 11 have something for everyone. Good news everyone! “Futurama” and the delivery workers of Planet Express are returning to us this summer. The revival season of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen’s cult classic sci-fi animated series will premiere on Hulu on July 24, Disney announced Thursday. To accompany the news, a teaser for the new season, christening the revival “Hulurama,” has been released. Watch below.
Originally a Fox series that debuted in 1999, “Futurama” has had a long and bumpy shelf life, with the new Hulu season marking the third revival for the animated series over the course of its existence. After getting canceled by the brainless drones that run the network in 2003 after four acclaimed seasons, the show eventually returned in the form of four TV movies released across 2008 and 2009, which were eventually split into four episodes each and counted as their own individual seasons. When it comes to science and mathematics, I'm more of a Philip J. Fry than a Professor Farnsworth, but even I can appreciate the way the writers of "Futurama" clearly know their stuff. It would be easy for the series to completely fudge the details on some of the more scientific concepts, but "Futurama" combines comedy with some seriously nerdy science, in part because showrunner David X. Cohen is a physicist. Along with his team of incredibly intelligent writers, Cohen managed to make "Futurama" the perfect pairing of smart science and silly stereotypes.
While speaking at a conference for the Institute for Pure & Applied Mathematics, Cohen said that sometimes it's a little tricky to balance the show's need to be funny with its need to be a positive look at science and math. Good news, however — they seemed to have found the perfect formula.

As one must always recall when talking about "Futurama," it's a show made by genius sci-fi nerds. Those who know the show likely know that its writers' room is full of people with advanced degrees in mathematics and computer science, a fact that plays itself out in multiple gags throughout the series; there is, for instance, an oblique math reference involved in Bender's serial number. And while Math may prepare the mind for logical structure (as "Futurama" writer Dr. Ken Keeler once said in an interview), attention to dramatic continuity is not as pressing an issue. Showrunner David X. Cohen once pointed out that...

Futurama is both one of the funniest and one of the smartest TV shows ever made. In addition to just being consistently hilarious, quotable and often poignant, the show is packed to the brim with obscure references that only a handful of fans will probably pick up on the first time through.
A lot of these references are math or science related, as many of the show’s writers have pretty impressive academic backgrounds. The head writer and executive producer, David X. Cohen, graduated from Harvard with a B.A. in physics. He also has a degree in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. Another one of the show’s writers, Ken Keeler, graduated from Harvard with a PhD in applied mathematics. In fact, Keeler famously invented his own mathematical theorem for the Season 7 episode The Prisoner of Benda.

Updated: Animated series writers are protesting a decision by the Television Academy to allow NBC’s Community to compete for Emmys in animated categories, arguing that they should be allowed similar cross-genre privileges.
Community made it onto the Emmy nomination ballot in several categories, including best animated program — along with 33 entries from full-time animated shows. The episode, “Digital Estate Planning,” features the cast rendered into 8-bit characters to compete in an old-school-style video game.
Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy), David X. Cohen (Futurama) and Al Jean (The Simpsons) are among the 52 writer-producers who signed a letter to the TV Academy arguing...

It seems like one of the biggest qualms with this year's Oscar nominations was the omission of Christopher Nolan from the Best Director category. Sure, "Inception" landed eight Oscar nominations, but most of them were in the technical categories instead of the acting or directing categories.
That means that the two biggest nominations "Inception" is up for at this year's Oscars are for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. It might be tough for "Inception" to win Best Picture with "The Social Network" and "The King's Speech" as the continued frontrunners, but now it doesn't seem as big of a long shot for the film to beat out "The Fighter" and "The Kids Are All Right" for Best Original Screenplay.
Over the weekend, the Writer's Guild of America honored Nolan with the Best Original Screenplay prize, which many critics believed to be a minor upset. So far, "Inception" has only...

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

Two of the front-runners for the best screenplay awards at the Oscars confirmed their favorite status at the Writers Guild of America Awards Saturday night (Feb. 5).
"Inception" writer-director Christopher Nolan (above left) won the WGA's honor for best original screenplay at the ceremony, and Aaron Sorkin (above right) took home the award for best adapted screenplay for "The Social Network." His script is based on Ben Mezrich's book "The Accidental Billionaires."
Other awards went to the writing staff of "Mad Men" for best drama series, "Modern Family" for best comedy series and "Boardwalk Empire" for best new series. "I Love You Phillip Morris" came out of nowhere and secured a nod for the 2011 Writers Guild Awards. Based on the book by Steven McVicker, the film starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGRegor as prisoners in love received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination.
"Phillip Morris" will be competing with awards-favorites "127 Hours" (screenplay by Danny Boyle & Simon Beaufoy), "The Social Network" (screenplay Aaron Sorkin), "The Town" (screenplay by Peter Craig and Ben Affleck & Aaron Stockard), and True Grit (screenplay by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen).

It's Tuesday again.Let us not discuss why this is late.Yesterday, I went to my local Food Bazaar to buy beer, chips, milk and Life cereal last night as I was finishing up Ken Burns' Civil War. It's been kind of rainy here in New York for the past couple of days, so I had my polka dot umbrella, which doesn't make me look like the most masculine boy, but it's easily my best umbrella.Checking out at the local grocery, I realized I had left my debit card in my other pants and had to charge some groceries to credit. This required my ID, which got the cashier in the mostly-Latin neighborhood I live in to do a double take at my driver's license. "You're Spanish?" she asked, in a pleasantly surprised tone."Yes," I said. And she gave me a discount on beer.I don't know...

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder brings the Futurama series back from the lesser performances of the second and third direct to DVD releases. When I slid the Blu-ray into my PS3 about five different thoughts flitted through my head: please be great, please be really great, please be great, please be funny, please be great. I wasn't being all that creative at the time as my mind's obsession with a suitable ending(?) to the Futurama series had been plaguing my thoughts since the third Futurama movie failed to impress. Bender's Game took stale jokes and put them into the Futurama universe. I recognized the necessity to pay lip service to a genre of nerdery that had been neglected thus far in the Futurama movies - but it had gone too far on too little material. Into the Wild Green Yonder makes no such mistake.
