It’s true that a lot of Star Trek’s praise came from its stellar cast and the visual flare of its director, Jj Abrams, and that most of its criticisms came from the holes and coincidences in its plot, but one can’t discount the role that the story Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman’s script told had in taking a property that was traditionally thought of as being a niche thing for sci-fi geeks and turning it into a summer blockbuster that appealed to mainstream audiences. So it might be interesting to hear what else they have up their sleeves when it comes to ideas for science fiction movies. Universal, at least, seems to have liked something that they’ve heard, because Deadline is reporting that they’ve just purchased a pitch from the writing duo that’s tentatively titled Sagittarius A. It’s described as being a sci-fi thriller, and...

The movie is called Sagittarius, and they have hired Steven Karczynski to write the script. He hasn't really done anything that you'd know. He previously wrote a Black List screenplay called The Umbra with is set to be directed by Martin Campbell (Green Lantern). He also wrote the script for the big screen adaptation of the video game Dark Void for Reliance and Plan B Entertainment.

Like Hansel before them, Roberto Orci and Robert Kurtzman are hot right now. The scribes have penned some of the Hollywood’s recent hits like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Mission: Impossible III and Star Trek (2009). Universal Pictures has plans for a new, original sci-fi project titled Sagittarius , Deadline reports. The script arrives from an idea by Steven Karczynski, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci with Karczynski providing the screenplay. Plot details are, at this stage, not available, but the title references the zodiac constellation and there's possibly a metaphorical link to the Greek myth of Chiron, a bow-wielding Centaur. Kurtzman and Orci are well-known as a writing pair, having turned in scripts for films like Cowboys & Aliens , Transformers and the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness . Karczynski, meanwhile, is best known for his "Black List" screenplay, Umbra . That film, also science fiction, is being developed for Martin Campbell to direct.

Paranoia-fuelled thriller Umbra has become something of a filmmaking hot potato, bouncing around from director to director, but never quite finding a home. Now its hopes are pinned on Martin Campbell, who has recruited his Casino Royale collaborator Paul Haggis to take a fresh swipe at the script.Originally written by Steven Karczynski, the story finds a businessman receiving a mysterious package that plunges him into a massive government conspiracy that turns out to have close ties to him and his family. Because clearly, if the conspiracy was simply Amazon screwing up and delivering the wrong package, it would be an awfully dull film.Umbra has been through the hands of at least two big names already, with Roger Donaldson attached back in 2009 and Joe Carnahan taking it on in 2010 and working on a draft with Karczynski. Now Haggis will be applying his touch to it, and Campbell will likely...

Is it horror? Is it sci-fi? Is it horror/sci-fi? Those are the questions we've been asking about Endgame Entertainment's upcoming flick Umbra, and now that the project has a new writer And a new director on board, we should be able to find out the answers sooner rather than later.
Per Deadline, Martin Campbell (Green Lantern, Edge of Darkness) has been set to helm Umbra, which previous director Joe Carnahan (whose The Grey is opening later this month) has amicably dropped out of for personal reasons. Paul Haggis (pictured; Million Dollar Baby, Crash), who did rewrite work on the Campbell-directed Casino Royale, has also been brought on to rework the script. Shooting will begin in the spring.

Green Lantern's Martin Campbell has found his next directing gig. Deadline reports that Campbell has taken over for Joe Carnahan on Umbra, which is being funded by Endgame Entertainment. Paul Haggis, who worked with Campbell on Casino Royale, has been brought on to do a rewrite on the drama about "a business man who gets a mysterious package in the mail and gets caught up in a government conspiracy." Filming is scheduled to start in the spring.
Umbra is being produced by Endgame’s James Stern along with Hal Lieberman and Campbell’s production partner Lucienne Papon. Steven Karczynski and Carnahan did re-write work on the most recent draft. Carnahan parted ways with the project for personal reasons. He has been busy with The Grey, which stars Liam Neeson and opens on January 27.

Director Martin Campbell and scribe Paul Haggis have been brought onboard the thriller "Umbra" at Endgame Entertainment says Deadline.
The story follows a business man who gets a mysterious package in the mail and gets caught up in a government conspiracy. Joe Carnahan was previously attached to direct but has since dropped out.
The pair will work in the same capacities as they did on the Bond reboot "Casino Royale" - Campbell will direct while Haggis is performing a re-write of the previous script draft by Steven Karczynski.

It seems like ancient history, and it kind of is, but way back in 2010 Joe Carnahan signed on to direct the thriller "Umbra." The project had been kicking around awhile – and once was set to be a Roger Donaldson/Nicolas Cage vehicle, but they made the terrible-looking "Seeking Justice" instead – but it continued to sit on the backburner, as Carnahan went off and shot his upcoming man vs. nature vs. Liam Neeson tale "The Grey." Well, the project has changed hands once again, falling into the lap of someone who needs a serious rebound. Martin Campbell, still smarting from the disaster of "Green Lantern" and anxious to recapture the goodwill sent his way following the excellent "Casino Royale," has now replaced Carnahan on the project. And just to ensure he'll be working with a tight script, he's enlisted Paul Haggis (who penned "Casino Royale," fyi) to rewrite the it. Steven Karczynski penned the.

Coming off the one-two testicle punch that was Edge of Darkness and Green Lantern, Deadline reports that Martin Campbell is reteaming with Paul Haggis for Umbra, a drama that was originally slated for Joe Carnahan; he’s since dropped out for “personal reasons.” The drama, which follows “a business man who gets a mysterious package in the mail and gets caught up in a government conspiracy,” was originally written by Steven Karczynski, with later rewrites coming from Carnhan and, now, Haggis. All those hands can’t be a good sign.

I can't help but feel a certain sympathy for Joe Carnahan. After coming out of the gate early with the very good Narc, he struggled to make appropriate follow-ups like Killing Pablo in between stumbling with Smokin' Aces and The A-Team. Mr. Carnahan is working now on The Grey, with Liam Neeson, but he's also just signed to rewrite and direct a thriller called Umbra. Deadline says that Joe Carnahan will rewrite Steven Karczynski's original draft. The logline sounds miserable: "a man finds an old cassette tape which reveals a horrifying secret." There's got to be more to it than that, right? Perhaps. I'm going to condense a ScriptShadow review of Umbra from last year: Umbra is one frustrating-ass script. Roger Donaldson was originally slated to direct and Nicolas Cage to star in “Umbra”, but since Cage has 501 other movies he’s currently attached to star, he had to drop out, and so did Donaldson. Now the film has landed in the lap of “A-Team” director “Smoking” Joe Carnahan, who has signed on to re-write and direct the thriller for Relativity Media. Originally written by Steven Karczynski, “Umbra” is a thriller about a man who comes into possession of an old cassette tape that is said to reveal “a horrifying secret.” I’m guessing it has something to do with the third man on the Grassy Knoll. Oh come on, you know I’m right. It was a conspiracy! Ahem. Before he can write and direct “Umbra”, though, Carnahan will have to finish up his survival drama “The Grey” first.

Umbra, the thriller written by Steven Karczynski, to be directed by Roger Donaldson and star Nicolas Cage, fell apart due to budget issues. Now, according to Deadline, the project is coming together at Endgame where Joe Carnahan is in a deal to rework the script as helm the project. Hal Lieberman produces the flick whose story concerns a man who finds an old cassette tape which reveals a horrific secret. Carnahan last directed the strange and lackluster The A-Team for Fox. His current project is The Grey with Liam Neeson in the leading role. Carnahan's other work includes Pride and Glory, Smokin' Aces and Narc. Of those, Aces is in my opinion, his best work to date.

Without wishing to give away too much, he'll discover a connection between himself and this oh-so-secret group. The script was originally written by Steven Karczynski, and at one point way back in the dim and distant days of 2009, Roger Donaldson was in line to direct. Let's hope that this time it actually moves ahead.

Exclusive: Umbra, the Steven Karczynski-scripted thriller, nearly got off the ground last year at Relativity Media with director Roger Donaldson and Nicolas Cage. But it fell apart over budget. It has come together at Endgame with Joe Carnahan making a deal to rewrite the script and direct. The thriller concerns a man who finds an old cassette tape which reveals a horrifying secret. Hal Lieberman will produce with Endgame's James Stern. Carnahan is out to cast on The Grey, a drama he'll direct that has Liam Neeson starring. Carnahan, who last directed Fox's The A Team, is repped by CAA.
