NBC has canceled Debris, Deadline confirmed on Thursday, after the fate of the freshman sci-fi detective drama had been up in the air following its May 24 finale that wrapped up a 13-episode run.
It was one of five NBC shows — along with Good Girls, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Manifest and Ellen’s Game of Games — that were left off the network’s list this month of returning series and new shows. A big swing and the first NBC 2020 pilot to get a series order and premiere on the network, a renewal had not been looking promising.
The series, from Fringe creator J.H. Wyman and hailing from Legendary TV and Universal TV starred Jonathan Tucker and Riann Steele as agents from two different continents and two different mind-sets. “Debris” stars Tucker, Steele, Norbert Leo Butz and Scroobius Pip.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details from the Debris Season 1 finale
“Well, if the worst case is to happen, that, they decide that they weren’t going to continue this, I would look for other avenues to continue telling this story, because I think that the story itself is really a story worth writing about, and so much more to tell,” says Debris creator J.H. Wyman of the NBC bubble show that ended its first mind-bending season tonight.
Having not received a renewal yet, the fate of the series starring Riann Steele and Jonathan Tucker is still in the fog of the unknown – whether it stays on the Comcast-owned network or finds a possible new home on streaming or cable.
Which is not unlike tonight’s “Celestial Body” finale that saw Steele’s MI6 agent Finola Jones and Tucker’s alien debris infected CIA operative Bryan Beneventi betrayed by...

NBC, Fox, ABC and CBS all unveiled their Fall 2021 TV schedules at this week’s “upfront” presentations to advertisers – conducted virtually, due to the pandemic – showing of which new series will be added to lineups and which old favorites are returning. This also meant revealing the broadcast TV shows that won’t be making it back for the 2021-2022 season in the process.
But then there are the straggler series, the ones that networks have yet to make a decision on, even though their slates are set. The reasons behind why a show has yet to be renewed or canceled this late in the season vary, with consideration given to how many episodes it has left to air and headaches over contract negotiations.

If great science fiction often inspires a sense of wonder, then “Debris” star Jonathan Tucker is already overwhelmed. Roughly 25 minutes into our phone interview, the ruminative actor mentioned an article he read in The New Yorker about an object in space that’s “moving with a speed and property no one can explain.” As Tucker described the story, his voice got higher and his words tumbled out faster; the thrill of discovery shifted to a big picture curiosity in what it really means.
Given the story, it’s easy to imagine plenty others reacting the same way. The print edition had a simple headline: “Swinging on a Star.” But the online version puts its awe-inspiring question right up top: “Have We Already Been Visited by Aliens?”
“They think it’s a UFO — they genuinely believe it’s a UFO,” Tucker said. “And they call the UFO ‘Oumuamua,’ which is named...

NBC’s “Debris” has a challenge in the era of streaming. Releasing weekly episodes when most audiences are used to binging is tough, but particularly so when you’re telling a deliberate story about aliens and the answers aren’t particularly forthcoming. How do you keep network audiences coming back and avoid getting frustrated? It’s a question “Debris” will have to reconcile. The first two episodes of the new show were certainly eye-catching, with a cast of players who are more than comfortable doing the heavy lifting. But the sci-fi story, at its heart, is still seeking a way to gain fans for being anything more than weird.
“Debris” definitely stands on the shoulders of legends and if you’ve enjoyed series like “The X-Files” and, especially, creator J.H. Wyman’s previous show, “Fringe,” then odds are this will similarly capture your attention. The series follows Bryan Beneventi (Jonathan Tucker...

What makes a good TV show?
That's not a trick question, even though it's mostly subjective. You might be asking why does the review for Debris Season 1 Episode 1 starts with such a question in the first place.
I'll tell you why -- I'm recommending Debris despite its 50% critics Tomomater reading on Rotten Tomatoes, and to some people, that rating matters.
A good TV show can follow a formula or it can be entirely original. It can get quickly to the point or it can slowly reveal its true nature over time. There isn't one answer as to why one show works and another doesn't, so I'll share my reasons for giving Debris two thumbs up.
Fringe is one of my all-time favorite shows, so of course, I wanted to check out J.H. Wyman's new show. He was Fringe's showrunner beginning in the second season, and he had a great impact on the show.

“It’s thrilling to be on a platform that can get the content to the people, so to speak,” says Jonathan Tucker of returning to NBC with tonight’s debut of Debris. “I think there’s incredible opportunities now in network and in primetime,” the Parenthood and Hannibal vet adds.
Co-starring Riann Steele, the J.H. Wyman-created Debris focuses on Tucker’s CIA operative Bryan Beneventi and The Magicians alum as very different MI6 agent Finola Jones as they track the literal and figurative fallout from an alien spaceship on Earth and its inhabitants. A mind bender and a physics-shifter in primetime, the compelling Debris is Tucker’s first network lead role since 2007’s The Black Donnellys.

Halfway through the pilot of “Debris,” I realized I had no idea what might be going on, both because of the show’s deliberately opaque design and its tendency to lapse into the kind of corporate conspiracy jargon that binds too many network procedurals. And yet, by the end of the pilot of “Debris,” I realized that was basically fine by me. While there’s no telling exactly where the new NBC drama will go in ensuing episodes — however convoluted, smart, or else perversely compelling — its launch is at least effectively eerie enough to excuse its otherwise basic instincts.

NBC’s new sci-fi drama Debris opens with a fairly standard action scene, with federal agents chasing black-market crooks through a luxury hotel. But the crooks aren’t selling guns or diamonds; they’re selling fragments of a destroyed alien spaceship that are scattered across the globe. And when a hotel maid innocently touches one of those fragments, it instantly teleports her and sends her falling several stories to her death. Yes, Debris — premiering next Monday, March 1 at 10/9c; I’ve seen the series premiere — is anything but standard.

A year after Legendary brought in Chris Albrecht to launch Legendary Global, the former Starz CEO is taking over the company’s entire TV operation.
Legendary is consolidating its international (Legendary Global) and domestic TV businesses under Albrecht, who has been named Head of Legendary Television. Nick Pepper, who served as President of Legendary Television for the past three years, will transition to an executive producer role on projects he had developed.
The move had been in the works for the last couple of months, with Albrecht gradually expanding his responsibilities. It aims at better positioning the company to capitalize on the global expansion of the U.S. streamers and the heightened need for platform defining content. "Two agents from different continents, and different mindsets, are tasked to work together to recover the debris, whose mysteries humankind is not quite ready for."
The series stars Jonathan Tucker, Riann Steele, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scroobius Pip, and is set to premiere Monday, March 1.
The first trailer certainly gives Fringe vibes, so we're sure this one will be on your radar, Fringe fanatics. The good news is that it comes from J.H. Wyman, one of the producers of Fringe.

NBC is picking up the pieces from its coronavirus-impacted pilot season.
The network has ordered alien spacecraft drama “Debris,” the only pilot which managed to complete shooting before the production shutdown, to series.
News of the order comes exactly a week after NBC announced plans to stagger the remainder of its 12 pilots across this and next year’s development seasons. NBC still intends to shoot five of its buzziest pilots, including that for “Langdon” which centers around the character made famous by Dan Brown and Tom Hanks, later this year.
“Debris” follows two agents from two different continents, and two different mindsets, who must work together to investigate when wreckage from a destroyed alien spacecraft has mysterious effects on humankind.
Jonathan Tucker plays one of the agents Bryan Beneventi, who is described as a headstrong, smart CIA operative currently working on the investigation of strange occurrences. British actress Riann Steele plays the other Finola Jones.
