In Harlem, New York, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture has an exhibit that looks at the appearance of black characters on Saturday morning cartoons in the 70s, through drawing and production cells. As NY1's Roger Clark reports, "Strong, positive black characters like Lt. Uhura from "Star Trek", Peter Jones from "The Hardy Boys" and Verb from "Schoolhouse Rock" became cartoon favorites along with animated real life entertainers and athletes like The Jackson Five, Muhamed Ali and The Harlem Globetrotters." In leaving Dragons’ Den, he departs the show in something of a crisis. Fellow Dragon Hilary Devey informed producers that she would be quitting the show midway through series 10 so that she could front Channel 4′s The Intern, which is set to air later this year.
Paphitis was also one of the more likable of the five Dragons – the odd-ball Devey, moody Duncan Bannatyne, often arrogant Peter Jones and cantankerous Deborah Meaden made for a relatively unlikable panel of Dragons, yet Paphitis charmed audiences with his good nature,...

In 1984, Joe Dante and Steven Spielberg teamed up to create a film that would become one of the best examples of horror comedy to ever be released. Small monsters terrorising a small American town sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel, but in Gremlins the scares were equalled by a dark streak of humour that captured the imagination of a generation.
A sequel followed in 1990 in Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Unlike the first film, the second bite of the Gremlin cherry abandoned a “straight” story in favour of throwing in as much mischievous chaos, parodies and in-jokes into the mix as possible, which included the appearance of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, a Phantom of The Opera skit, bat and spider gremlins and even a would be bride Gremlin in the hormone enhanced Greta.

TNT has ordered six episodes of the business-revamp series featuring UK entrepreneur Peter Jones, who will travel across the country to put his reputation and cash on the line to save struggling small businesses. The network plans to premiere Save Our Business late this year. The A. Smith & Company series will be executive produced by Arthur Smith and Kent Weed (behind the similarly revamp-driven Fox series Kitchen Nightmares) as well as Frank Sinton. Jones, with interests in mobile phones, media and real estate, is no stranger to TV, appearing as a regular on the BBC series Dragon’s Den (the UK version of ABC’s Shark Tank). The series is the latest unscripted project to move forward at TNT, which yesterday greenlighted the Dick Wolf-Magical Elves series Cold Justice — about two investigators who dig into murder cases that have gone unsolved for years — to premiere in the summer. Next month comes Boston’s Finest,...

Barnaby Southcombe's debut feature – a noir thriller starring his mother, Charlotte Rampling – shows promise, but ends up being unconvincing
Barnaby Southcombe has worked extensively in TV, and now makes his feature film debut as the writer and director of this moody, downbeat noir starring his mother, Charlotte Rampling. She plays Anna, a lonely and seductive divorcee who has a habit of showing up to speed-dating evenings and going home with likely men. When one of these encounters appears to end in a blood-soaked nightmare, Anna finds herself being tracked and then dated by a troubled cop, played by Gabriel Byrne. But is she a murderer? There is plenty of atmosphere here, and I liked Southcombe's eye for the sinister forms of London's Barbican complex and its high-rise towers. Anna's job is nicely judged, too: a salesperson at London's upmarket department store Peter Jones. But the progressive revelation of Anna's secret feels muddled,...

The BFI London Film Festival kicks off tonight with a big ole' monster mash in Leicester Square. Tim Burton will be unleashing his terrifying mummy-hamster Colossus as Frankenweenie gets its opening night gala. The filmmaker and his frequent collaborator (and missus) Helena Bonham Carter won't just be strolling the red carpet, though, The pair have been honoured with a BFI Fellowship to be awarded at the Lff awards on October 20.This year marks the Lff's inaugural awards and the festival bigwigs have been busy conjuring up a jury to pan for pure movie gold amidst a pretty solid looking line-up. Like cinema's equivalent of Theo Paphitis and Peter Jones, this year's movie dragons will be Tom Hiddleston, David Hare, David Yates, Olivia Colman, Sebastian Faulks, Argentinian director Pablo Trapero and Hong Kong filmmaker Nansun Shi. Chins will be stroked, eyebrows raised and at least one filmmaker will tearfully admit that its plot projections were over-ambitious.

Well if you hadn't really heard of Homeland prior to this weekend, you probably have by now. The Showtime series pulled off a major upset at the 64th Annual Emmy Awards last night, winning a large chunk of the major awards in the Drama category over favourites like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Claire Danes and Damian Lewis both took home awards for Lead Actress and Actor in a Drama Series, while the show also broke Mad Men's four-year win streak for Outstanding Drama Series. Elsewhere, Aaron Paul won his second Emmy for his supporting performance as Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for Veep. Modern Family still took the Outstanding Comedy Series, however, while the HBO movie Game Change took the Outstanding Mini-Series or TV Movie. Kevin Costner did manage to pick up some...

In May, 2011, Matt Smith's 11th Doctor appeared with his companions Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill in an episode of Doctor Who penned by Neil Gaiman.
In the story, The Doctor's Wife, the Time Lord answers a distress call and finds himself in a junkyard on a sentient asteroid. The strange inhabitants include a woman called Idris, played by Suranne Jones, who turns out to have an unexpected link with the Tardis.
The story won a Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation at the 2011 Nebula Awards, presented in May this year, and has been nominated at the 2012 Hugo Awards, which take place in Chicago from August 30 to September 3.
Since the episode aired, there has been speculation that Gaiman would write for the sci-fi show again. So what does the author himself have to say?

The music world has suffered another tragic loss. Peter Jones, the one-time drummer for Australian pop group Crowded House, died Friday, the band confirmed on its website. According to Australia's Herald Sun, the rocker had been battling brain cancer. He was 45. Crowded House rose to fame in the mid-'80s with such power anthems as "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Something So Strong." The Liverpool-born Jones, a former schoolteacher, joined the band 1994 and stayed with them until they broke up two years later. "We are in mourning today for the death of Peter Jones," the band said in a statement. "We remember him as a warm-hearted, funny and...

From 1962 to 1992, keeping America entertained late at night largely was the duty of one man.
And it was a task Johnny Carson performed willingly and enjoyably, as his iconic status as longtime caretaker of NBC's "The Tonight Show" confirms. David Letterman's new CBS contract will make him the longest-running after-hours host in television history, but even he acknowledges the late Carson was the king -- as does PBS' highly enjoyable, thoughtfully organized "American Masters" profile "Johnny Carson: King of Late Night," debuting Monday, May 14 (check local listings).
"It's always nice to look back when you're looking at good things," reasons trumpeter Doc Severinsen, Carson's bandleader for 25 of the 30 years of his "Tonight" tenure. "I don't think there was ever a day when we didn't realize where we were and what we had, but that would be true for Ed (McMahon, Carson's perennial announcer and sidekick) and me probably more than for Johnny.

Peter Jones -- the documentary's director, producer, and writer -- appeared on CBS This Morning to discuss the project he's dreamed of for 15 years (he says he wrote Johnny a letter every year during that time, asking to collaborate on a documentary about the comedian).
Check out the video above for clips from the documentary, plus more on Carson's ability to "hide in plain sight" as a notoriously private celebrity, and what surprising fact Jones discovered about Johnny.

Chicago – There is arguably no icon on a higher pedestal in the history of television than Johnny Carson, the man who didn’t just host “The Tonight Show” for three decades but became a cultural fixture. We let Johnny into our homes and trusted him in ways that I believe just can’t happen again in a more cynical TV age. He was a nightly visitor for millions and the new PBS documentary about him, “American Masters Johnny Carson: King of Late Night,” is one of the best TV history documentaries yet produced.
TV Rating: 5.0/5.0
Why is “King of Late Night” so captivating? Not only did the filmmakers get unprecedented access to Johnny’s personal and professional archives, they knew how to use those clips to tell his story. With Carson and Ed McMahon gone, they can’t be interviewed, but Carson dropped many biographical nuggets over the course of the show.

This story first appeared in the May 18 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Filmmaker Peter Jones sent a letter to Johnny Carson every year for 15 years, seeking the late-night talk show host's cooperation in making a documentary of his life. Finally, Jones got a call out of the blue from Carson, who said, "You write a damn fine letter, Peter, but I don't have anything more to say." That, as viewers will learn from the American Masters documentary Johnny Carson: King of Late Night, was typical of Carson. He wasn't exactly Garbo in his latter days,
