Cannes -- Chinese TV giant Asian Union has signed a deal with German genre specialists Action Concept to co-produce a slate of four or five action movies shot in China and Europe.
The first title, "Mission Overseas," is a kidnapping drama. A Chinese chauffeur travels to Germany to rescue his boss' kidnapped daughter. Once there, he is forced to team up with a down-on-his-luck German detective.
"It s a classic buddy action movie with a lot of humor," said Liu Xiao Lin, executive director of Asian Union and a co-producer on the project along with Asian Union's Ma Zhongjun and Action Concept head Hermann Joha. "There is a great demand for this genre in China amongst a wide audience."
The $5 million production will shoot on location in China and Germany later this year. Stefan Retzbach, the showrunner for Action Concept's long-running autobahn cops series "Alarm for Cobra 11," will oversee the scriptwriting.
