Plot: A spacey pool cleaner (Chris Pine) discovers a plot to steal water from Los Angeles during a drought.
Review: (Note – Poolman Was Reviewed At TIFF 2023) In the fourteen years I’ve been covering TIFF, I’ve seen only a handful of movies that I’d say were shockingly bad. The Mickey Rourke/ Megan Fox/ Bill Murray dud Passion Play comes to mind. Poolman ranks with the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed at JoBlo. It’s a stunningly unfunny comic noir vanity project for star Chris Pine, who also directed and co-wrote the film. That it was made at all is a testament to the power of celebrity, as it has already become notorious at the festival for the amount of walkouts taking place at the screenings.
So why is Poolman so awful? It comes down to the screenplay and Pine’s grating lead performance as a kind of...

Grab your floaties and stay out of the deep end because Vertical has acquired the U.S. rights to AGC Studios‘ Poolman, the absurdist comedy and Chris Pine’s directorial debut! The comedic caper premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023, where audiences experienced Pine’s first time behind a camera for a feature-length film.
Joining Pine in Poolman are Annette Bening, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and DeWanda Wise. In addition to directing, Pine co-wrote the script with Ian Gotler (The Doula). The duo also produced the film alongside Stacey Sher (Erin Brockovich) and Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman).

“Poolman,” Chris Pine’s directorial debut that had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, is a pastiche of Los Angeles past and present. It’s a film noirlike “Chinatown” and “L.A. Confidential,” but its characters are the New Age-y, socially conscious, showbiz-adjacent type. The film was supposedly the first to be screened on 35mm at TIFF in years, only to be projected in Dcp due to an unspecified technical issue.
Somewhat recalling “True Romance”-era Brad Pitt, Darren (Pine) is the titular eccentric dude who ritually checks the water levels in the Tahitian Tiki apartments’ pool and meditates while immersed therein. He regularly composes letters using a typewriter to Erin Brockovich about his activist aspirations. He also religiously shows up at city council meetings to complain about the substandard public transit system.

WW (Wonder Woman) director, Patty Jenkins, explains in a detailed and emotional letter, what actually happen to the WW3 project. In a sentence, DC disconnected Jenkins from directing WW3. Read Jenkins’s letter below.

WW84 (Wonder Woman 2), directed by Patty Jenkins, was a victim of Covid, and fell straight to the jaws of streamers, instead of being exclusively screened on the huge canvas. Add to this the average story, and you get an unsuccessful project. Don’t get me wrong. My family and I enjoyed it very much watching it on IMAX. Exclusive: DeWanda Wise is set to join the ensemble cast of Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman. She joins a cast that already includes Pine, Annette Bening, Danny DeVito and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios is fully financing the project, which it launched at EFM earlier this year. CAA Media Finance is co-representing the film’s domestic rights with AGC.
Pine directs from a script he co-write with Ian Gotler. Pine plays Darren Barrenman, a hapless dreamer and would be philosopher who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block in sunny Los Angeles and crashing city council meetings with his neighbors Jack and Diane (DeVito and Bening). When Barrenman uncovers the greatest water heist in LA history since Chinatown he makes uneasy alliances with a beautiful and connected femme fatale while following every lead he can with corrupt city officials, burned...

Ariana DeBose and Jennifer Jason Leigh have joined Chris Pine’s directorial debut, “Poolman.”
Fully financed by Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios, the actors join an existing cast of Annette Bening and Danny DeVito. Pine also stars in the movie, which is billed as a moving tribute to Los Angeles.
Plot details for the pic are so far sparse, but “Poolman” is crafted as a nod to famous LA noirs like “Chinatown,” “The Long Goodbye,” “The Big Lebowski” and “La La Land.”
DeBose is fresh off her awards season sweep, which included Oscar, BAFTA and SAG awards for her star-making historic portrayal of Anita in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.” Her other credits include “Hamilton,” “The Prom” and HBO’s “Westworld.” DeBose is also set to host the Tony Awards in June.
Meanwhile, Leigh — an Oscar nominee for “The Hateful Eight” — most recently starred in TV series “Hunters” and Lena Dunham’s “Sharp Stick.

The estate of Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien successfully stopped a new cryptocurrency that tried to launch under the puntastic name, “J.R.R. Token.”
The “J.R.R. After becoming the must-see cultural phenomenon last year during the pandemic, Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” dominated the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend with nine awards. Scott Frank’s Cold War-era limited series about orphan chess prodigy Beth (Anya Taylor-Joy) was honored across the board for casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period makeup (non-prosthetic), original dramatic score (Carlos Rafael Rivera), production design, sound editing, and sound mixing.
We’ll have to wait and see if this translates to “The Queen’s Gambit” winning Outstanding Limited Series at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on September 19. Regardless, Frank assembled a talented team of craftspeople for conveying an almost surreal mood and atmosphere to Beth’s rite of passage.
But the big question for Tesoro was: What is too much chess? The answer: Play the faces more than the chess. And once viewers got their first glimpse of Beth, they were hooked and carried...

It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).
(By the way, if you think three is a lot of shows to celebrate the television industry’s mostly below-the-line workers, 2020 had Five Creative Arts Emmys shows.)
Sunday’s first show began at 1 p.m. Pt. The second Sunday show, the final one of the two-day 2021 Creative Arts Emmys, begins at 5 p.m. Pt. That’s the presentation that has most of the mainstream categories that don’t fit in next week’s Primetime Emmys.
None of the three Creative Arts Emmys shows are being televised live. Next Saturday, a highlights show of sorts will air on Fxx starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Disney+, for this edition we look at how costume designer Shawna Trpcic, production designers Andrew L. Jones and Doug Chiang, and directors of photography Matthew Jensen and Baz Idoine pushed the world-building of the Star Wars series “The Mandalorian” in its second season.
If there are two skills that define the crafts team assembled by series creator Jon Favreau, it’s how they simultaneously look to the past and the future in designing the story of the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal). Led by concept artwork by production designer Doug Chiang, who came up under George Lucas, the series is steeped in the philosophy of how to graphically tell story of new, far-off, fictional worlds.

The cinematography for “Mank,” “Nomadland,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “News of the World” and “Cherry” has been nominated as the best film work of 2020 by the American Society of Cinematographers, the Asc announced on Wednesday.
The first four of those films were expected to be recognized by the Asc and are thought to be strong contenders for the Oscar for Best Cinematography, but “Cherry” came as a surprise. The Russo brothers film came out in February to withering reviews and had not been considered an awards contender until the Asc included its cinematographer, Newton Thomas Sigel, in its list of nominees.
“Cherry” landed that nomination over a group of films that included “Tenet,” “Minari,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Judas and the Black Messiah” — and “Da 5 Bloods,” a more high-profile film that was also shot by Sigel.

#WonderWoman1984 is spectacularly fun. A blockbuster with lots to value. Tonally reminiscent of the Superman movies in the best spots. Delivers a different kind of empowering kick than the original. Sentiments & themes are thoroughly enriching. Action sequences, sublime. pic.twitter.com/QFwbbFRieX

DC FanDome kicked off on Saturday with the Wonder Woman 1984 panel. The film’s stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal, and director/co-writer/producer Patty Jenkins joined forces with Brazilian hosts Érico Borgo and Aline Diniz to celebrate the fans in a big way. Going on right now is DC FanDome, a Comic-Con style event for the DC universe of films. Obviously, conventions in a traditional sense can’t happen right now, so this virtual idea may well flourish. To kick it off, Warner Bros has whet the appetite of blockbuster fans with a brand new Trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, the next adventure for WB’s massively successful comic book character. This is certainly a good way to get some attention for a new experiment, that’s for sure. You can see the Trailer at the bottom of this post (and it’s definitely a good one), but first, let’s talk about the sequel to Wonder Woman a little bit. The movie is a sequel to Wonder Woman, of course. The official plot synopsis remains pretty simple, which reads just as: “Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big...

The future of shooting on film looks bright, thanks to a cadre of passionate directors led by Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino, and Kodak, which recently signed an extension with Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros. for longer term film stock purchase commitments. 2019 was a banner year for 35mm film releases, including four Best Picture Oscar nominees, but there were no noteworthy film releases shot and projected in 70mm.
However, there will be four prominent large-format releases in 2020, kicking off with a franchise first for James Bond, “No Time to Die” (April 10). Daniel Craig’s fifth and final outing as 007 is directed by Cary Fukunaga (“Beasts of No Nation”) and shot on both 65mm film and IMAX by “La La Land” Oscar-winner Linus Sandgren. “Tenet” (July 17) is Nolan’s time-bending espionage thriller costarring John David Washington (“BlacKkKlansman”) and Robert Pattinson (“The Batman”), shot by go-to cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema,...

Details of Patty Jenkins follow-up to 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ have started to trickle through from one of the producers that confirms ‘1984’ will not be a sequel.
Producer Charles Roven has hinted to Vulture that there will be hardly anything tying the two films together and that Gal Gadot’s ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ will, in fact, be a standalone movie much like we would expect from ‘Bond’.
“[Jenkins] was just determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel. And she’s definitely delivering on that. It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana-slash-Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years. But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling.”
“It’s a stand-alone film in the same way that Indiana Jones or Bond films are, instead of one continuous story that requires many instalments.

Robin Wright is all set to reprise her role of General Antiope for Wonder Woman 1984. Although Antiope was killed off, Wright will be joining Chris Pine as Steve Trevor in returning from the dead for the sequel.
However, General Antiope’s return is looking like a more plausible one. She is expected to appear in a flashback scene with co-star Connie Nielson as Diana’s mother Queen Hippolyta.

The prolific composer Hans Zimmer has been confirmed to score the Wonder Woman follow-up, 1984.
This will be the first time Zimmer has returned to the DC universe after effectively ‘retiring’ from the comic book genre after Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The romance with film turned a corner this year with the massive success of Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk.” The World War II actioner had the widest 70mm release in 25 years (125 prints, dominated by IMAX), grabbing $188 million domestically and $525 million worldwide. And the visual impact of the IMAX format was powerful in the best picture frontrunner. Whether by land, by air, or by sea, the imagery was immersive. That is why Dutch-Swedish cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema is the frontrunner in his race as well.
But the impact of film on the cinematography race doesn’t stop there. Also in strong contention are “The Beguiled,” “Call Me By Your Name,” “Wonder Struck,” and “Wonder Woman,” all period pieces shot in a variety of styles that particularly benefited from the texture and warmth of 35mm film. At the same time, “The Post,” “Murder on the Orient Express” (another 70mm spectacle), “The Florida Project,...

This could be the landmark year that Roger Deakins finally — after 13 nominations — lands a win for his stunning collaboration with Denis Villeneuve on “Blade Runner.” Other hopefuls include four-time nominee Bruno Delbonnel for “Darkest Hour,” two-timer Ed Lachman for his exquisite black-and-white 20s and color 70s visuals for Todd Haynes’ “Wonderstruck,” and two-time winner Janusz Kaminski for Steven Spielberg’s 70s Watergate drama “The Post.”
Vying for their first nods are Danish Dan Laustsen for Guillermo del Toro’s lush ’60s romantic fantasy-thriller, “The Shape of Water,” Swiss Hoyt Van Hoytema (BAFTA-nominated for “Interstellar” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) for his 65 mm photography on Christopher Nolan’s World War II

I have to admit I can no longer distinguish 35mm film from high end digital cameras when I go to the movies. I can spot 16mm or anamorphic lenses, but the line between digital and 35mm celluloid has become impossibly blurred. Wonder Woman cinematographer Matthew Jensen can still spot the subtleties, but for Jensen the aesthetics of film are only one of the reasons he enjoys working in that format. “It’s very hard to tell the difference, especially when you’ve gone through a Di (digital intermediate) process and you’re projecting digitally. It’s not often that VFX excels by plays a supporting role in superhero fights, but in “Wonder Woman” it was all about restraint during the praiseworthy “No Man’s Land” World War I trench battle. Director Patty Jenkins knew it was important to keep it simple and character-driven because this marked the big superpower reveal for Gal Godot’s Amazon princess, Diana.
“From a visual effects standpoint, this really wasn’t groundbreaking,” said VFX production supervisor Bill Westenhofer, who won the Oscar for “Life of Pi.” “It’s pretty straightforward and emotional.”

Indeed, Diana’s taken to the front lines outside a Belgian village, where fighting has been at a standstill for more than a year. But her compassion and heroism come forth, and she emerges as Wonder Woman for the first time: climbing out of the trench, proudly revealing her costume, and charging 300 yards across a muddy field.

Raised on the relatively sheltered island of Themsycira, Diana Prince has much to learn about the outside world by the time Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman gets going in earnest – including the anatomy of a man.
It allows for a delightfully innocent exchange between Gal Gadot’s title heroine and Steve Trevor, the Wwi pilot played by Chris Pine who crash lands on Themsycira and becomes the first man to walk alongside the Amazon Warrior. And though it may be considered slightly spoiler-ish, Pine reflected on Wonder Woman‘s most revealing scene in a recent interview with Kabc.
The Star Trek actor, who was partially nude for the bathing scene, recalled the moment in which Diana Prince looks on at his Trevor with curious fascination, before she asks whether he considers himself a typical man. Trevor’s response? “Slightly above average.”
“I actually knew I was going to do the movie because of that.

The DC Cinematic Universe that Warner Brothers is sporting has had a bit of a rough beginning to it. Ever since the Christopher Nolan trilogy of Batman movies concluded, their attempt to reboot things with Superman and then Batman has been met with less than critical acclaim. Man of Steel had a mixed response, while both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were outright panned. This week, however, they have what looks to be their first well reviewed blockbuster in Wonder Woman, which is notable for many reasons. Not only could it be righting the DC ship, it finally represents a big screen female superhero. A long time coming, no doubt. Luckily, expectations have been met, or perhaps even exceeded. Kudos to all involved. It took decades to make this one happen, but it was worth the wait. The film is an origin story for the world’s biggest female superhero.

Upon the first sun-soaked glimpses of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (of breathtaking Themyscira), Diana Prince’s standalone adventure warms with poise and confidence. Jenkins’ intent is always to nurture, humanize and assert DC’s gender-smashing heroine with crown-worthy detail. Her leadership is a howling battle cry in so many senses. As an origin story that reveals the Wonder Woman we deserve. As social commentary that kicks down the boy’s club door. But most importantly – for the DC Extended Universe – it’s a sign of things to come. Goosebumps, excitement and hoots of pleasure can all be expected from a point of view that comic book movies have been lacking across the board. Give Diana’s coming-of-heroism moment a Beyonce background track and I might have fainted – hail hail, my new queen.
