Playwright Alan Bennett has written original screenplay The Choral, which will begin filming this summer.
There’s a reason a remake of Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads monologues (pictured above) was one of the first things put into production when the pandemic started in 2020. Not only were they easy to film with a single cast member, but the texts are also regarded as modern classics of drama, each story a masterpiece in construction and storytelling. You only have to watch the original versions to see the astonishing power of David Haig in Playing Sandwiches or Dame Thora Hird in A Cream Cracker Under The Settee.
The Choral, meanwhile, is Alan Bennett’s first original script written for the screen in forty years, after 1984 comedy A Private Function. The synopsis reads as follows:
Set in Ramsden, Yorkshire in 1916, the plot centers on the chorus master and most of the men of the ambitious local Choral Society,...

The current landscape is making it “increasingly hard” to fund British stories such as the Post Office drama that is currently dominating the news agenda, according to ITV’s drama boss.
Polly Hill, who commissioned the four-parter that is on the front page of every national newspaper this morning, raised concerns that shows unique to British culture such as Mr Bates vs The Post Office are “important” but “increasingly hard to make.”
“It’s now become harder to fund these British stories,” said Hill, who was likely referencing super-inflation in the drama market and the need to attract co-production funding, which can dilute editorial. “We must be able to keep making them, because Mr Bates vs The Post Office shows that drama can help make a difference, and importantly that the audience wants to hear them.”

Exclusive: With the almost impossible-to-believe Post Office scandal bedecking the front of every national newspaper this week, the writer of the ITV smash drama about the saga has said it “tapped into” frustrations with the “politics of the moment.”
Gwyneth Hughes, who penned the Toby Jones-starring four-parter, said the team has been “blown away” and “completely surprised” by the cut-through and media attention generated by Mr Bates vs The Post Office, as she detailed the legal quagmire and years of gaining people’s trust they went through to get the show from inception to screen. She was speaking in the hours before a motion attempting to speedily put the scandal right was debated by dozens of lawmakers in parliament.

Asa Butterfield and the rest of the cast return for festive follow up Your Christmas Or Mine 2, here’s the trailer.
Your Christmas Or Mine landed on Amazon Prime last year, and it went down really rather well.
The plot saw Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk play young couple James and Hayley who, upon deciding that they don’t want to be apart for Christmas after all, get on each other’s respective trains and find themselves at the others’ family home. Fuelled by farcical misunderstandings, the film is a solid slice of festive fun. It’s no Planes, Trains & Automobiles of course, but then again, what is.
Still! We’re getting more of it, and Your Christmas Or Mine 2 looks set to stick to the same formula. Think of it as a bit Home Alone 2 to Home Alone, if you will.
The synopsis reads as follows:...

Prime Video has debuted the trailer for the Christmas movie sequel ‘Your Christmas or Mine 2.’
The follow-up follows young couple James (Asa Butterfield), and Hayley (Cora Kirk), who are gearing up for their second Christmas as a couple. And that can only mean one thing … more mayhem with the Taylor and Hughes families.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year … but will it be for James and Hayley? James’ father has invited the Taylors to spend Christmas in a luxury ski resort in the Austrian Alps, so they can meet his new American girlfriend (played by Jane Krakowski). However, Hayley’s dad Geoff insisted on handling his family’s side of the booking and something clearly got lost in translation. After a mix-up with transport at the airport, the two tribes end up at each other’s accommodations, on different sides of a valley and opposite ends of the Tripadvisor ratings scale.

Fly on the wall? Pah! The wall is all the way over there! These days, viewers want to be flies buzzing right around the noses of the people making the headlines, close enough to tell what they had for breakfast. And thanks to true story TV dramas, they can.
It’s been a long time since ropey Lifetime Movies were as good as it got for true story TV. In recent years, British production companies have stepped up in a big way to serve a growing appetite for fact-based drama, but all too often the real-life TV dramas of today focus on haunting tales of history’s most gruesome murders. If you’re sick of serial killers, there are plenty of non-murder true stories to enjoy in drama form, from very public scandals to ordinary people doing extraordinary things, to the kinds of tragedies it’s important that we never forget.

With 21 wins under its belt, Netflix’s royal drama “The Crown” has always been an Emmys favorite. So much of the excitement around the show comes from its cast, which rotates every two seasons. Claire Foy and Matt Smith led the line as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in seasons one and two while Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin featured as Prince Charles and Princess Diana in seasons three and four. Now, in season five, the show is led by Imelda Staunton as the Queen, Dominic West as Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki as Diana.
Those stars are hoping to be the latest in a long line of “The Crown” actors nominated for their work on the show. So far, “The Crown” cast has received 17 acting nominations in total. That is an incredible number. Season one garnered two bids, season two reaped four nominations, season three received two bids, and...

‘The Crown’ 2023 Emmy submissions: Which 15 cast members are on the ballot for Season 5? [Exclusive]
Season 5 of “The Crown” has cemented its strategy for the 2023 Emmys, Gold Derby has learned exclusively. (See the complete list of submissions below.) Netflix’s regal series is one of the TV academy’s all-time favorites, winning 21 total Emmys (including Best Drama Series in 2021) from 63 nominations across its first four years. Because the show revamps its cast every two seasons, there is entirely new crop of acting contenders for this year’s awards cycle, with Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II and Dominic West as Prince Charles submitted as leads.
In total, 15 cast members have been put forward by the network this year, including six supporting performances: Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Salim Daw as Mohamed Al-Fayed and Jonny Lee Miller as John Major. Alex Jennings is one of those actors whose face you recognize but whose name may escape American audiences. He portrayed Prince Charles in “The Queen” and his great uncle, King Edward VII, a decade later in “The Crown.” This fine character actor held his own opposite Maggie Smith in “The Lady in the Van” and Hugh Grant in “A Very English Scandal.” Jennings is a consummate thespian who excels in supporting roles but rarely receives the credit he so richly deserves.
His shines in Hulu’s medical drama “This is Going to Hurt,” based on the book of the same name by the show’s creator, Adam Kay. Ben Whishaw is Kay, a doctor working in an NHS hospital in the mid-noughties, while Jennings is Nigel Lockhart, the Chief Consultant in the ward. This limited series is a masterful blend of comedy and drama and is one of the year’s most exquisitely crafted stories.

“This is Going to Hurt” had a good night at the BAFTAs last weekend, with leading man Ben Whishaw claiming his third BAFTA win with a victory for Best Actor for the Hulu medical drama. Based on Adam Kay‘s memoir of the same name, the series follows his early years as a doctor working in an NHS hospital in mid-noughties England. Whishaw, who is in the mix for an Emmy bid for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series Actor, isn’t the only star hoping for awards success with this critical darling. Harriet Walter could well be in the hunt for an Emmy nomination for “This is Going to Hurt” alongside her bid for guesting in “Succession.”

One of the most heated 2023 Oscar battles that’s been developing over the past few months is the Best Actress race. According to Gold Derby experts, Cate Blanchett may be ahead of the pack for her performance in Todd Field’s “TÁR,” but there are at least three other actresses nipping at her heels, who all stand a chance at winning the category.
At first glance, it might not seem like there’s much in common with the characters played by Michelle Yeoh in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Danielle Deadwyler in “Till” and Michelle Williams in “The Fabelman.” But get this: these contenders all play mothers trying to do the best for their children, which plays a key factor in all three movies.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Crown Season 5, Episode 3, “Mou Mou.”] The Crown has always had a penchant for standalone episodes and one particular installment in Season 5 presents an almost unbelievable story surrounding Mohamed Al Fayed. At the same time, he begins cutting a business deal with a young man on the other side of the fences, and he catches sight of the Duke of Windsor (Alex Jennings) and his wife Wallis Simpson (Lia Williams) as they pay a visit within the walls of the ritzy establishment just out of reach for Mohamed. As the episode continues, Mohamed tells his father about seeing the former King of Britain, to which he gets a blunt response. Mohamed’s father isn’t a fan of the royals,...

"What if the other side has already predicted every step you will take?" Peacock has revealed an official US trailer for a British streaming series titled The Undeclared War, originally made for Channel 4 in the UK. It already premiered there in June, but will start streaming on Peacock in the US this August. This British thriller series is about a fictional future (or perhaps it's a crystal ball?) in 2024 during the next UK elections. A leading team of analysts buried in the heart of Gchq secretly works to ward off a foreign cyber-attack on the country's electoral system. A young student is "quickly thrust into the center of an escalating data war with Russia that has dangerous implications extending far beyond cyberspace." Sounds scary, no? Starring Hannah Khalique-Brown as Saara, along with Simon Pegg, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Edward Holcroft, Adrian Lester, Alex Jennings, Kerry Godliman, plus Mark Rylance as John Yeabsley.
