Father John Misty recently returned with the ballad “Funny Girl,” released with old Hollywood imagery to match its quirky lyrics. He continues that streak with “Q4,” the latest single from the upcoming album Chloë and the Next 20th Century.
The video prominently displays vintage typestract animation, complete with images of rotary phones, pointe shoes, and, naturally, Josh Tillman with paper eyes. It was directed by Tillman’s frequent collaborator Grant James, who first worked with the songwriter on his “Funtimes in Babylon” video.

"What Maisie Knew"
What's It About? A modern update on Henry James's 1897 novel of the same name, this indie drama follows a six-year-old girl caught in the middle of her parents bitter custody battle. With her aging rock star mother (Julianne Moore), art dealer father (Steve Coogan), and mom's bartender boyfriend (Alexander Skarsgard), Maisie (newcomer Onata Aprile) learns to navigate through the adult's selfish behavior.
Why We're In: While uncomfortable and sad, "What Maisie Knew" tells a deeply emotional story that will stay with you. The adult leads give memorable performances, but it is Aprile's rawness that makes the film so gripping.

The first thing that is likely to catch your eye about The Company You Keep, the latest directorial effort from Robert Redford, is the vast amount of star power it contains. I can’t recall having seen so impressive a cast for at least the last several years. Take a look at this list: Robert Redford, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Julie Christie, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Anna Kendrick, and Sam Elliott. These names, most of whom have won or have been nominated for an Academy Award, would be enough to convince most people to give the film a shot, but then again, more details on the film couldn’t hurt.
The plot revolves around a group of ex-radicals known as the “Weather Underground.” A few decades ago, they staged numerous protests and even committed a number of violent acts, including a bank robbery. Years later,...

★★☆☆☆ With a stellar cast consisting of an incredible nine Academy Award-nominated performers, it's safe to say that the expectations for Robert Redford's The Company You Keep (2012) are suitably high. However, such anticipation results in severe disappointment as we're treated to a tedious, American equivalent of Last of the Summer Wine. Redford directs and also stars as Jim Grant, a small-town lawyer and single father who becomes embroiled in local journalist Ben Shepard's (Shia Labeouf) investigation into the terrorists of an activist group, following the arrest of former member Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon).
It soon transpires that Redford's Grant is actually long-term FBI fugitive Nick Sloan, and due to Shepard discovering his true identity, the former activist will have to give up his comfortable home life with his daughter and go on the run once again. What is intriguing about The Company You Keep is how the viewer is...

“I work because I want to work,” says Redford, now 76. “Work keeps me going.”
By Barbara Lovenheim
When I interviewed Redford in 1984 for his role in "The Natural," he was defensive about his image as a matinee idol and hesitant to talk with reporters because, he told me, “if you talk about an issue, what comes back is a description of what you’re wearing. Reporters only want to know how tall you are and if your teeth are capped.” Now 76, Redford has no reason to apologize for his appearance or his life; he has endured as a major talent for a very long time; he is still actively making films and starring in them, and he has turned Sundance into an important institute for independent filmmakers. He is now defying age and arthritis by working hard, playing tennis, skiing and riding horseback through miles of rugged country.

A former member of the revolutionary militant group the Weather Underground goes on the run after a journalist outs him in The Company You Keep, a political thriller directed by Robert Redford and based on Neil Gordon’s novel. It’s a film that touches on the costs of political commitment, specifically the fervent activism of young college kids in the ’60s who, swept up in the revolutionary moment, took actions that they pay for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, it’s not as thought-provoking, or as political, as it sounds. Since Redford doesn’t have the guts to either condemn or applaud the Weather Underground radicals, The Company You Keep basically boils down to one long, boring chase. There’s a subject here for a good movie, perhaps even a great one, but this isn’t it.

Chicago – The golden age of the great Robert Redford occurred in the 1970s, when he participated in making passionate political statements with “All the President’s Men,” “The Candidate” and “Three Days of the Condor.” Redford stars in and directs a throwback to those times, the equally passionate yet softer-in-narrative “The Company You Keep.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
It’s a reminder of 1960s radicalism, the evolution of life and how priorities can muddy up youthful indiscretions. It unfortunately creates a somewhat melodramatic and difficult to believe chase thriller along the way, but there is also that passion, the underlying need by communicators like Redford to make films that matter, about subjects that should give pause in the current U.S. political landscape. This film is worth seeing, if only to honor and remember the boomer generation that stopped an unjust war, and then was destined like all of us to see their...

Robert Redford discussed filming his new political thriller, ‘The Company You Keep,’ which is now playing in select theaters, with ‘Extra‘ correspondent Jerry Penacoli. The actor, who also directed the film, said “It’s the story I wanted to tell the way I wanted to tell it,” referring to the tale of the anti-war radical group, the Weather Underground. “When this was going on, I could be sympathetic to the cause.” The filmmaker also discussed the casting of 12-year-old classical singer, Jackie Evancho, the runner-up of the fifth season of ‘America’s Got Talent’ in 2010. The actress played Isabel, the daughter of Redford’s character, Jim Grant, in the thriller. The director [ Read More ]

Creating a dramatic, humanizing story that emotionally allows audiences to look inside of an event that has helped define American history, is a notable trademark of Robert Redford’s directorial and acting careers. From low-budget films to acclaimed big studio movies, the filmmaker’s career has emphasized how one event can drastically alter numerous people’s lives. From his critically successful historical mystery drama, 1976′s ‘All the President’s Men,’ to his new thriller ‘The Company You Keep,’ which is now in limited theatrical release and he directed and stars in, Redford regularly chronicles the ever-lasting radical effects of a small group of people’s passionate beliefs. ‘The Company You Keep’ follows Jim Grant (Redford), [ Read More ]

The third film in Robert Redford’s recent series of stillborn, bleeding heart dramas, "The Company You Keep" is a busy but inert civic-minded thriller. As a director, Redford has yet to break his recent habit of using hackneyed dialogue to talk down to his audience with Aaron Sorkin-esque dialogue that authoritatively spells out his talking points. But unlike "Lions for Lambs," an impressively incensed civics lesson that thinks it’s a drama, "The Company You Keep" is too cool of a film to be admired for its creator’s chutzpah alone. In fact, it’s probably the most frustrating of Redford’s recent films because it has a pseudo-contemplative atmosphere to it, one that superficially begs viewers to reflect upon how far they would go for their convictions. Political apathy is the real enemy in "The Company You Keep," making it pitiably ironic that Redford’s latest is as unmoving as it is.

Robert Redford’s Jim Grant speaks a poignant line in his latest film, The Company You Keep, stating, “Secrets are dangerous things. We all think we want to know them, but if you’ve ever kept one yourself then you understand to do so is not just knowing something about someone else, it’s discovering something about yourself.” As the film’s ominous title suggests, The Company You Keep is about uncovering secrets and what doing so can mean for the people keeping them and those desperate to reveal them. Driven by dynamic performances from an all-star cast, The Company You Keep is as much about what is said as what is not said, all underscored by a restrained, but moving score from Cliff Martinez. Martinez’s rock band roots have made him no stranger to electrifying his scores and pushing the boundaries of standard orchestration. Unlike the thriller pulse Martinez created for last year’s Arbitrage...

Los Angeles — Robert Redford does his most compelling work in some time as both actor and director in "The Company You Keep," a tense yet admirably restrained thriller about a fugitive forced out of hiding after 30 years to prove his innocence. Adapted with clarity and intelligence by Lem Dobbs from Neil Gordon's novel, and lent distinguishing heft by its roster of screen veterans, this gripping drama provides an absorbing reflection on the courage and cost of dissent.
Recalling aspects of Sidney Lumet's poignant "Running on Empty" from 1988, but with a more subdued emotional palette, the film opens with vintage-style news footage detailing charges against members of radical antiwar group the Weather Underground in the early 1970s for plotting to blow up buildings in multiple U.S. cities. A second report follows, attributing responsibility to the same group for a Michigan bank robbery during which a security guard was killed.

Robert Redford’s latest directorial effort, The Company You Keep, features a number of well-known character actors such as Sam Elliot, Chris Cooper, Richard Jenkins, Brendan Gleeson and Stanley Tucci. It also has in its cast some of the hottest young actors of today like Shia LeBeouf, Anna Kendrick and Brit Marling.
It even has some of the finest actresses of our generation like Susan Sarandon and the great Julie Christie. The thing I love about Robert Redford movies is how insightful and opinionated they are, never existing as just a bland surface experience. I’m not only talking about his directorial efforts with that statement either, I’m talking about anything the man is really involved in. Sure, there are some duds which are blemishes on his illustrious career, but no actor can avoid that, and most other projects he’s worked on are rich with subtext and provide insight on their topics.
The Company You Keep is no different from the better work he’s participated in, offering a thought-provoking take not only on the storied history of The Weather Underground, but the hard-hitting and morally ambiguous world of journalism – which of course sparked my interest.

Return for Redford as Actor/Director in Heated Political Thriller
Robert Redford, the actor, has been a staple of American pop culture for half a century, his golden smile and wet eyes long ago solidified as iconic. As a director his work has been more sparse with years passing between projects. His newest, The Company You Keep, has him returning to the dual role of director/star alongside a nearly endless stream of world class actors (Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Terence Howard…). The film follows Redford as a fugitive on the run after his cover is blown by a pesky small town journalist, Shia Labeouf. Though it can at times overplay its political leanings, The Company maintains a steady pace and engages.
As Ben Shepard, Labeouf brings a sincerity, a depth and roundness to a character – the youthfully determined journalist – all too often played with one-dimensionality.

Robert Redford’s “The Company You Keep” comes to theaters in a few weeks and, for those curious to check this film out, a whopping eight clips have landed online. The first thing that will pop out at you upon viewing the clips is how ridiculously stacked this cast is. Redford, Shia Labeouf, Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Brendan Gleeson, Brit Marling, Anna Kendrick, Nick Nolte and Terrence Howard are all featured in the eight clips. If that’s not enough, how about some great, seasoned character actors like Sam Elliott, Stephen Root, Stanley Tucci, and Chris Cooper? Holy mackerel. The film centers on Jim Grant (Redford), a former Weather Underground member who has to go on the run thanks to a former colleague (Sarandon) getting arrested for a bank robbery that went wrong back in the ‘70s. Then there’s the young reporter (Labeouf) who attempts to make a name...

Five years after Robert Redford’s disappointing anti-war drama "Lions for Lambs" the 76-year-old actor, director and Sundance mogul is back in similar territory. He directs and stars in the forthcoming "The Company You Keep" which tells the story of Jim Grant, a public interest lawyer and single father living in Albany, New York. Shia Labeouf’s brash reporter exposes Grant as a fugitive, wanted for a murder he allegedly committed in his days as an anti-war radical. Grant is forced to go on the run and find the person who might be able to clear his name. (Read our review here) Redford pulled together a stellar cast for his 9th directorial effort, and ahead of the release even more glossy photos of the lovely ensemble (and Nick Nolte) have arrived. They include a scruffy Shia Labeouf (is there another kind?) being chewed out and by a finger-jabbing Stanley Tucci,...

Hitting April 5th, The Company You Keep has a cast that could make three films jealous, and yet, it may make some raise their eyebrows at Robert Redford… because Shia LeBeouf is in such a major role, surrounded by all the other names.
I’m not saying he isn’t up to the task (though I’m not saying he is), but with the list involved here, a lot of people are going to wonder about the decision. That’s just the movie world, like it or not. Given the serious venture we’re involved in with this complex plot, you just have to know that people are going to see Susan Sarandon, Chris Cooper, Julie Christie, Sam Elliot, and more, and they’re just going to have to do a double-take when we answer the, “So, who is in the big role as the reporter?”

Here is a new trailer for Robert Redford’s (where you been man!?) thriller The Company You Keep. Redford stars as a civil rights lawyer who must go on the run when he’s outed by a young reporter (Shia Labeouf) as being a former 1970s Weather Underground militant. The cast is top notch here: Susan Sarandon and Chris Cooper, Stanley Tucci, and Nick Nolte co-star.
Watch the trailer below, The Company You Keep opens on April 5th.
Jim Grant (Robert Redford), a civil rights lawyer and single father, must go on the run when a brash young reporter (Shia Labeouf) exposes his true identity as a former 1970s radical fugitive wanted for murder. Sparking a nationwide manhunt, Grant sets off on a cross-country journey to clear his name.

Another trailer has been released for Robert Redford's great looking new political thriller The Company You Keep. The story follows a young newspaper reporter played by Shia Labeouf, and after the arrest of a Weather Underground suspect (Susan Sarandon), Labeouf sets out on a journey to track down another at-large member (Redford) of the American radical left organization.
The movie has an amazing supporting cast as well that includes Julie Christie, Sam Elliott, Brendan Gleeson, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Anna Kendrick, Brit Marling, Stanley Tucci, Nick Nolte, and Chris Cooper.
I'm looking forward to this movie, I enjoy watching Redford's films. If you're not familiar with the 1970's Weather Underground movement you can find a detailed explanation below the trailer.
The script for the film was written by Lem Dobbs (The Limey, Haywire), and here's the synopsis for the film:
Jim Grant (Redford) is a widowed single father and attorney living in Albany.

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming movie, "The Company You Keep," starring Shia Labeouf -- take a look in the video above.
Labeouf plays a reporter, Ben Shepard, who is working on a story about fugitives who were former members of the Weather Underground.
In the preview, Labeouf is shown visiting a prison to interview a female inmate, Sharon Solarz (played by Susan Sarandon), who is described as "dangerous." Solarz is a former member of the Weather Underground who is known for being "one of the longest-standing fugitives on the FBI's most-wanted list." She is wanted for a bank robbery that led to the death of a guard. Labeouf later looks up an old college hookup, Diana (Anna Kendrick), who is now an FBI agent, to get inside information on the case.

Shia Labeouf continues his crusade to not be in movies with giant robots in "The Company You Keep," the Robert Redford-directed thriller in which the past comes a'callin' for a bunch of senior citizens who did something bad back in the day.
Shia plays an investigative reporter who gets caught up in the arrest of Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon, whose initials are also a double-s), a former Weather Underground activist who's been at the top of the FBI's Most Wanted list for decades following a Bank of Michigan robbery that resulted in the death of a guard. From there, her former partner Jim Grant (Redford) goes on the run, and Shia's investigation puts him in contact with more old-timers like Chris Cooper, Sam Elliot, Julie Christie, Brendan Gleeson, Richard Jenkins and even Nick Nolte.

We’ve already seen one trailer for Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep and today, we have a second one to prep us for the film’s limited release, which begins on April 5th. The thriller stars Redford (who will also direct) as ”a civil rights lawyer who must go on the run when he’s outed by a young reporter (Shia Labeouf) as being a former 1970s Weather Underground militant.”
From the looks of it, the film seems to be an engrossing tale of political intrigue with a very solid ensemble cast, that features Susan Sarandon, Anna Kendrick, Chris Cooper, Terrence Howard, and Brit Marling.
Personally, I like what I see from the trailer. It looks like Redford has crafted a satisfying thriller with an incredibly strong cast. I generally enjoy these types of films and while I don’t think The Company You Keep will break any...

I caught Robert Redford's latest directorial effort, The Company You Keep, in Toronto last year where I called it "an average thriller" that "passes the time despite being a little too long at just over two hours." Directed by and starring Redford, the film centers on Jim Grant (Redford), a civil rights lawyer and single father, must go on the run when a young reporter (Shia Labeouf) exposes his true identity as a former 1970s radical fugitive wanted for murder. From there it turns into a nationwide manhunt with a few twists and turns and a huge bend on slamming new media. Susan Sarandon, Terrence Howard, Anna Kendrick, Stanley Tucci, Chris Cooper and Nick Nolte co-star. Sony Classics is set to release the film on April 5 and you can watch the trailer below and read my full review right here.
