Renowned reggae crooner Junior English died aged 71 last week, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans, friends and family members far and wide – particularly among Britain’s Black Caribbean communities.
Widely regarded as the first “king of lovers’ rock” in the UK, English released more than 13 studio albums across a six-decade career, working with popular reggae producers and labels including Clement Bushay, the Pama brothers at Jet Star Records, Count Shelly, and Trojan Records.
With the capacity to bowl listeners over with his deep baritone, and thrill them with a striking falsetto, the London-based singer rose to become one of the most sought-after reggae artists of his generation.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1951, English was the youngest of three children. He began to perform as a pre-teen and recorded two songs, “Fay is Gone” and “My Queen” (a duet with Errol Dunkley) for producer Prince Buster in the 1960s.

There can’t be many pairs of hands as safe as Don Letts’s when it comes to music knowledge. A cultural polymath who has been front-and-centre of the music scene for over 40 years – as a musician, DJ, radio presenter, Grammy Award-winning music video and film director. Letts was one of the key figures in the introduction of reggae to the punk movement, working particularly closely with The Clash.
He’s returned to reggae, celebrating his first love with a series of podcasts for Turtle Bay, and in his latest Reggae45 podcast, he has zeroed in on reggae’s place in Jamaican cinema. “With this episode Don takes the term soundtrack from a literal point of view, delving deep into the world of film and how the sound has a parallel connection with the story on the screen.”

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Luke Cage” Season 2, including the finale.]
“Luke Cage” series creator Cheo Hodari Coker is a longtime comic book fan, and it shows with the number of fun Easter eggs he includes in the show’s first outing. Since then, Netflix’s Marvel world has expanded, and therefore in Season 2, the show doesn’t hold back when it comes to pop culture references and full-blown crossovers. Many are obvious, but some are for diehards or eagle-eyed, pause-button-happy fans.
“Luke Cage” is the type of show that references the Avengers but never names them. It also exists in the present but feels retro thanks to the heavy ‘90s hip-hop influence and nods to the original comics when Luke Cage (Mike Colter) was drafting off the blaxploitation craze. Check out all the Easter eggs and pop-culture references we could find below, and let us know what we’re missing in the comments.

From Kingston to Lewisham, here are five other must-see reggae movies
The Harder They Come (Dir. Perry Henzell, Jamaica, 1972)
Jamaica's first feature, and the one against which others are measured. The plot – poor country boy seeks fortune in city – is archetypal, but Henzell cleverly turns our admiration for hero Ivan (Jimmy Cliff in incendiary form) into revulsion, as the film shifts through melodrama, comedy and musical into tragedy. Immortal movie moments – "You think the hero can be dead before the last reel?" scoffs Ivan at one point – and a stunning soundtrack led by Cliff's title song make this a five-star classic.
Rockers (Dir. Ted Bafaloukos, Jamaica, 1979)
A "Dreadsploitation" flick that's now a vibrant time capsule of reggae's halcyon days. Drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace plays a hapless muso caught up in Kingston's music wars. The plot's paper thin, but there's a gallery of great cameo appearances – Jacob Miller and Gregory Isaacs...

Lover's rock influenced the Police and Sade, and gave women a voice in reggae – so why was it sidelined in its native Britain?
In 1979, Janet Kay's piercing falsetto was one of the defining sounds of the summer. Silly Games, her bittersweet ode to a faltering relationship, enjoyed heavy radio play, thanks in part to a subtle arrangement by songwriter/producer Dennis Bovell, a distinctive drum pattern from Aswad's Angus Gaye and distribution on a Warners subsidiary. The song reached No 2, the highest chart placing for a black, British woman at that point. It also signalled a coming of age for lover's rock, the softened, British reggae sub-genre that focused on romance, but, as noted in Menelik Shabazz's documentary The Story of Lover's Rock, involved so much more than setting teenaged heartbreak to a reggae beat.

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:

Well, congratulations New Yorkers, because you’ll get to see at least 2 films I saw at Sundance in January, when they screen at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, which just announced the second half of its festival lineup – the Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screening sections, most notably.
The films I’m referring to are Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and The Guard, which Don Cheadle co-stars in, as an FBI agent (or is it CIA).
I’m still planning on going through the full list of entries to spotlight any titles worthy of this website, and I’ll do that in coming days/weeks… definitely before the festival begins next month – a festival I plan to attend, since it’s right in my backyard.
Worth noting is that Rapaport’s doc will be making its New York premiere, the...

Reggae star Gregory Isaacs has died at the age of 59. The Jamaican singer, best known for his 1982 track "Night Nurse", passed away at his London home on Monday morning, October 25 after a long battle with cancer.
His wife Linda, who was at his side when he died, says, "Gregory was well-loved by everyone, his fans and his family, and he worked really hard to make sure he delivered the music they loved and enjoyed. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends."
Isaacs began working on music in his native Jamaica in the 1960s and went on to release more than 50 albums in a career spanning four decades. His song "Night Nurse" entered the charts again in 1997 when it was covered by British pop group Simply Red, and his last record, "Brand New Me", was released in 2008.
Isaacs is survived by his wife and children.

The great reggae singer Gregory Isaacs died today after a long battle with lung cancer. As per tradition, I'm going to use this moment to celebrate the deceased through his documentary appearances. Isaacs can be seen prominently in three films ("Rockers," "Land of Look Behind" and "Made in Jamaica"), and though one is not technically or completely non-fiction, it does somewhat fit the documentary tradition and format. This is his first, "Rockers," a 1978 musical from Ted Bafaloukos originally intended to be an actual doc about reggae. It has a plot, inspired by realist films like "Bicycle Thieves," and some…...

Reggae singer was known as the 'Cool Ruler.'

The "Cool Ruler" has died. Reggae great Gregory Isaacs, who earned that chilled-out honorific thanks to his natty dress and emphasis on romantic, yearning tunes, died at the age of 59 at his home in London following a yearlong battle with lung cancer, according to BBC News.
Isaacs, best known for his bubbling 1982 hit "Night Nurse," gained his nickname as a result of his 1978 album, Cool Ruler, on which he perfected the reggae style known as "lover's rock," a swaying, bouncy sound that mixed the insistent thrum and downbeat of the Jamaican islands with a 1950s R&B crooner-style vocal.
"Gregory was well-loved by everyone, his fans and his family, and he worked really hard to make sure he delivered the music they loved and enjoyed," his wife Linda said in a statement.

Cricket. I must confess, until this week, I had more interest in the insect than the sport and, even then, I can’t remember the last time I thought fondly of a cricket… Jiminy Cricket of Walt Disney Pinocchio fame, maybe… So the prospect of sitting down to 83 minutes of men talking sport really wasn’t something I was looking forward to or expecting to enjoy, and I just couldn’t imagine a human interest angle that would stir me.
When I think of the sport I think of men in white playing the genteel sport in quaint little English towns or on village greens – an image easily conjured up given that I spent part of my childhood in a small English town in Essex on a street that led to a recreation ground where cricket was a regular summer activity. Not that I ever watched a game – as far as I was concerned,...

It didn't surprise me seeing Jahdan Blakkamoore popping up on former Soulive vocalist Toussaint's first album, Black Gold (I Grade). While the two men's styles are stylistically different--Toussaint's Gregory Isaacs to Blakkamoore's Don Carlos--there exists a kinship between them, predominantly in their honest, soul-seeking lyrics. Beautiful voices both, their minds merge on the upbeat horn-drizzled "Rise and Fall." It is only one great cut on an album of many. Toussaint reminds me of Luciano's non-vp Records albums: midtempo, sensual, excellent production, solid bass grooves punctuated with horns and a killer rhythm section. The man can write a ballad ("Hello My Beautiful," "Black Gold") without being clichéd, as well as hype a crowd ("Roots in a Modern Time," "Conquering Cocaine"). Toussaint is at his best right in the middle, with an irie classic like "Sunshine in the Morning," relying both on...

Last year, Mother Nature brought rain, but this year's gift was sweltering heat at the third annual Brooklyn Music Festival at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York on Independence Day (Sunday, July 4). Early in the day the show featured local artists and classic reggae musicians, including the legendary Marcia Griffiths (also known as the "Queen of Reggae"). She performed many of her original songs, covered a few Bob Marley tracks and then ended with "Electric Boogie," inviting guests on the stage to dance with her. She was followed by Gregory Isaacs, Barrington Levy and Tanya Stephens, each of whom had reggae fans on their feet dancing and singing along to some of their biggest hits.
New York's musical prodigy and hit-making producer Ricky Blaze hit the stage early in the day with his explosive hit "Just You and I" (which borrows Gyptian's "Hold Yuh" riddim) and "Feel Free,...
