It took Richard Shepard years to get out of “movie jail” after he made “The Linguini Incident,” the nearly-forgotten 1991 crime comedy starring David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette. But now the film is getting a second chance, with a series of screenings and an upcoming Blu-ray release.
Just about everything went wrong with the production that could go wrong, Shepard recalls. “I made this movie when I was 25 — and I was no genius at 25,” admits the director, who went on to helm features including “The Perfection” as well as TV series like Lena Dunham’s HBO comedy “Girls.”
Unlike Dunham, who was “in complete control of her artistic self” at that age, “I was not,” says Shepard.
But when his original co-producer, Sarah Jackson, suggested he try to rerelease a director’s cut of the scrappy indie caper about two restaurant employees who decide to rob their bosses, Shepard jumped at...

As the saying goes, ‘every great man is inspired by another great man to reach their full potential’. Well, this sentiment could not ring truer than in the case of Gene Hackman & Kevin Costner.
For the most part, viewers recognized Costner from the hit drama series Yellowstone, but he was popular throughout the 1990s for other roles as well. Beginning his career as an extra in low-budget productions, he progressed to more mainstream roles in acclaimed flicks, including Dances with Wolves and No Way Out.

Besides, he has shown a tremendous amount of endurance. Costner got up and over the critically panned films Waterworld and The Postman, which could have easily ended his career. And later, he spellbound audiences once again with his exceptional Yellowstone performance on the Paramount Network.

Opponent
Iranian-born writer/director Milad Alami’s sophomore feature, Opponent, centres on Iman (Payman Maadi), an Iranian refugee who has arrived in Northern Sweden with his family and hopes to be granted asylum. As a former Olympic wrestler, it’s suggested that he competes for Sweden to support his asylum request. The decision not only brings him into conflict with his family, but creates internal and external conflicts.
In conversation with Eye For Film, Alami discussed cinema’s lack of an inner life, how he used the stories of immigrants to grow the story, and his desire to create an elusive protagonist.
Paul Risker: Do you consider storytellers to be naturally curious about human nature and what makes people tick?
Opponent
Milad Alami: Definitely! With filmmaking you have to be a sponge and the fun part is trying to understand those difficult things. I think it was [Andrei] Tarkovsky who said if you want to.

Iman Vellani’s performance as Kamala Khan, aka Ms Marvel has captivated fans everywhere, and went above and beyond by playing Marvel’s Avengers which could be the most painful and harrowing gaming experience a Marvel fan can endure. The game was a massive disappointment and not just in the eyes of fans but as a game in general, but it did give Vellani something to work with for her live-action portrayal.
Marvel’s Avengers promoted Ms Marvel as a lead and given her more to do than the major heroes like Iron Man, Thor and Captain America who was notably absent from the majority of the campaign to give her moment to shine. From a creative point of view, the game had the demand, support and foundation for it to be a success yet Crystal Dynamics failed to deliver, Iman and fans all over are still grieving over the...

Marvel’s Spider-Man was said to be the first part of Marvel’s shared gaming universe, Iron Man jumpstarted the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2008 and has elevated the genre since; and Insomniac Games aims to replicate the same success through this format. It didn’t take long for other studios to take these iconic characters and give them their own video game.
There was a recent surge of superhero titles in the gaming industry, and while most are decent, there were noticeable disasters like Marvel’s Avengers. This setback may have been a factor in the cancellation of Spider-Man: The Great Web.
In a recent interview, Ms. Marvel herself, Iman Vellani, shared her criticisms about the game, saying it should have been a success if it weren’t repetitive, and some suggest it shouldn’t have taken the live-service route.

The Marvels was the latest entry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it gave the spotlight to three powerful heroines: Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and the young up-and-coming hero of New Jersey, Kamala Khan also known as Ms Marvel. The film had a mixed reception, but it served its purpose to show what this trio can bring to the table, and after her solo series on Disney+, Iman Vellani has been a fan favorite.
The character is fairly new, only a decade old but has caught the attention of comic book readers because of her religion, unique power set, and origins. There was a window of opportunity to establish the character in other formats like gaming, and Square Enix with Crystal Dynamics gave the world Marvel’s Avengers.
It was a short-lived and embarrassing adaptation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes but they managed to pivot the focus on the young heroine.

There’s a lone wolf out there in the mountains, somewhere near the Finnish border. In an early scene we see him walking through the snow, faint brown stains in the fur around his mouth evidence of a recent kill. From the hotel car park where the asylum seekers gather, we can hear him howl. Somebody will hunt him down and kill him soon, Iman (Payman Maadi) is told.
In the interviews the state interrogators ask “Why don’t you want to go back to your own country?” and, of course, most asylum seekers want that very much. Iman and his wife, Maryam (Marall Nasiri), are exhausted by being moved around, asked now to shift their belongings into yet another room to make way for a fresh wave of displaced people. They have two daughters and a new baby on the way. Iman is trying to make a bit of money by delivering.

Meeting your heroes is often intimidating, especially if they ask you to hit them with your best shot. Now that the SAG-AFTRA strike is over, Iman Vellani is making the rounds to promote Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, an adorable and action-packed adventure featuring a trifecta of powerful superheroes, including Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). Discussing the situation with Meyers, Vellani told the late-night host that Jackson asked her to elbow him with all her might while filming a fight scene. The nerve-racking request came after Vellani tried improvising a high-five with Jackson, and the seasoned actor had some advice for his young co-star.

Face front, true believers! This year we’ve had three multiplex visits to the realm of the “Distinguished Competition”, so you didn’t think the MCU would end 2023 with treks into Quantumania and Knowhere (hangout of those Galaxy Guardians)? Oh no, Smilin’ Stan wouldn’t want the fifteenth anniversary of the Studio to conclude without one more adventure. And it’s a sequel to a 2019 film that introduced the cosmic Carol Danvers, while also being somewhat of an expansion of her saga. That’s because she’s not completely going solo as she’s joined by two characters that made their heroic debuts on Disney+. Together this titanic trio is on a mission to save us all as The Marvels.

There is much that is lovely to gaze upon in the elegantly tailored documentary “Invisible Beauty,” about fashion maverick Bethann Hardison, whose role in her industry, starting in the late ’60s and continuing into the present, has been remarkable personally and game-changing culturally.
Those five decades — hers and the industry’s — are expertly woven together by co-directors Hardison and Frédéric Tcheng, using a cache of personal photos, a wealth of archival images, clips and interviews sewn together by Hardison’s sharing of recollections and insights. The film is also buoyed by a delicate, sometimes moody piano-led score courtesy of Marc Anthony Thompson, with some additionally vivid musical choices that match the energy of the late, “Black is Beautiful” ’60s and the fashion-fast-forward ’70s.

We are already used to the MCU expanding its canon through a whole range of series on the Disney+ streaming service and thus preparing the characters for bigger things that we will witness on the big screen. 2022’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ served as a follow-up to 2021’s ‘WandaVision’ series, and now, this year’s ‘The Marvels’ will serve as a crossover movie that isn’t only a sequel to 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel,’ but also a follow-up to three Disney+ series; ‘WandaVision,’ ‘Ms. Marvel,’ and ‘Secret Invasion.’
The upcoming 33rd MCU movie ‘The Marvels’ is just around the corner, and although we are aware that we won’t hear a lot about the movie from its actors and writers due to the ongoing strikes, the directors are still able to talk about it. The movie’s director, Nia DaCosta, recently teased a sisterhood relationship between three main characters.

When Bethann Hardison co-created the Black Girls Coalition in 1988 — a group formed with Iman to shine a spotlight on women of color in modeling — she didn’t know she was laying the foundation for a discussion about diversity in fashion that would continue for decades.
“I just wanted to celebrate Black models. I wanted them to see each other,” says Hardison, the subject of the new documentary Invisible Beauty. Co-directed by Frédéric Tcheng (Dior and I, Halston) and Hardison and in theaters Sept. 15, the film details the fashion industry’s history of racial exclusion and her unflagging efforts over decades to push for progress. One minute into the film, actress Tracee Ellis Ross calls Hardison the “godmother of fashion.”

The title Invisible Beauty is a nod to Ralph Ellison’s 1952 novel Invisible Man, in which an unnamed Black man narrates what life is like for African Americans in the South.

Ragnarok is a Norwegian Netflix series that blends Norse mythology with a coming-of-age drama. The narrative opens in the town of Edda, where a teenager named Magne discovers that he is the reincarnation of the Nordic god Thor. As he becomes aware of his supernatural abilities, he embraces his extraordinary power to prevent the impending catastrophe of Ragnarok, the mythological apocalypse. Alongside the forces of good, the series introduces us to the Jutuls, a family who outwardly appear as humans but are actually the reincarnations of ancient giants, or the Jotnar.
In the initial two seasons of Netflix’s Ragnarok, which aired in 2020 and the subsequent year, we saw Magne explore his supernatural capabilities. He was even able to create the most powerful weapon, Mjolnir. Simultaneously, his younger brother Laurits turned out to be the reincarnation of Loki, the God of Mischief. The term “coming of age” is misleading, implying “age” is some far-off looming entity that you can see approaching and prepare for accordingly. Really, growing up is experienced in milestones you seldom even notice until they’re long in the rearview and you’re busy being disappointed by how un-green the grass of adulthood really is. Bosnian writer-director Una Gunjak’s debut feature, “Excursion” which debuted in Locarno before playing in competition at the Sarajevo Film Festival, innately understands this hard truth and delivers a solemn, sensitive teen angst drama that is careful – perhaps too careful – to avoid big flourishes in favor of small gestures: a sharp glance, a loaded silence, a secret smile.
One such strange little smile plays across the lips of Iman (an excellent Asja Zara Lagumdzija), a straight-a 15-year-old in her last year of middle school as she’s driven home along with her best friend...

Regardless of what you think of the individual movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an unprecedented and monumental franchise, and its influence and impact (for better and worse) on Hollywood filmmaking is undeniable. That being said, 15 years later, the MCU has grown to be just as convoluted and impenetrable as its comic book counterpart. Each new installment requires you to do a college course's worth of research to understand what is going on while simultaneously having no impact on the rest of the franchise, because the MCU has grown so big, with so many titles that shift around in the release schedule, that Marvel can't risk something coming out too soon and messing up the timeline — again.
This means a lot of things get left behind in the MCU, and yet there is still a flood of new information and canon to keep track of, making it hard not just for audiences,...

“In her lifetime, Hardison has seen the pendulum swing toward and away from the Black model,” notes a release about the documentary. “At every setback, she spoke up and rallied her colleagues and clients in the industry to advance change. Now in her 70s, the Brooklyn native is writing her memoir, taking stock of her own legacy at a moment when the fashion industry was shaken by discrimination.”

A version of this story about the choreography of “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
